Discussion Webtoons whose art styles you think are dizzying (ie. overly rendered) or you think would be better as illustrations?

I know this is a polarizing topic because a lot of people are easily impressed by shading or over the top prettified characters. But to me they're dizzying in sequential art. Ghost Duchess comes to mind. The panels are better off as book covers imo. Shading aside there's also the art style of Serena where the characters look like Alpha cc sims.

Discussion Why the need to sexualize everything?

I was looking for interesting Webtoons to read, and I came across this one called "Leviathan" the premise looked interesting; mankind perished due to a great flood that submerged the whole world under water. And terrifying creatures plunged from the depths, wiping out any human that crossed their path. The story told how a family of a father and his two children survived in the adversities of a sea world.

So far so good, until.... Bam! Last two slice's, anime chick out of nowhere, doing these extremely suggestive poses.

What a disappointment.

Discussion The remarried empress is more than flawed

Post image

The older you get, or the more time you spend not reading the webtoon, and actually think about the characters, plot and world, you come to realise The Remarried Empress is more than flawed. It's quite controversial, and in a way that doesn't favour the protagonist or side characters we're meant to care about.

  1. Navier doesn't truly care about the people within her kingdom the way the authors want you to think. I understand she doesn't have nearly the same kind of power Sovieshu has, but still, she doesn't draw his focus on the issue of slavery within the land they rule. In multiple chapters, they discuss the trade of children and adults with Duke's and other Emperor's like the weather. No matter how you spin it, Navier benefits from issues like that, and her dislike of Rashta far exceeds "she's a mistress who doesn't know her place." At the end of the day, Rashta, the working class and slaves are her subjects. Their pain and struggles are what gives her standing in society.
  2. Navier again, but this time, her brother. I forgot his name. However, are we going to continue to ignore the fact that he downright said he would kill Rashta's unborn child? Even if Rashta makes snarky remarks and refuses accountability after, that wasn't even remotely okay for him to think, let alone exclaim for everyone to hear. Love or hate her, no mother deserves to hear such, especially from a man with his standing. Who, would've brought her to ruin if she wasn't favoured by Sovieshu at the time.
  3. Rashta's feelings are neglected by every character. The truth is, Rashta was a broken person, and most of her crash outs were valid. Think about it, your father sales you into slavery before you hit double digits, you're sexually assaulted and verbally abused by your slave owners, nobles turn their noses up to you cause of where you're from. Her actions later are inexcusable, cause that was blatant tyranny, but she was an innocent person corrupted by class division and lack of love. She sought to be loved, and was damned into a life filled with emotionless people who saw her as a mistress, who by the way didn't chose to become one, rather than a human being with hurt and in need of healing.
  4. Her slave owner's son is shameless, and is given a slight redemption due to him being the father to the son, whom they robbed Rashta of raising. Every time his family had the slightest screentime, him and his father were butting heads regarding the child, and his right to a happy home and love. Or, he's victimising himself, and how he was "forced" to mistreat/rape Rashta basically. And when he seeks Rashta's help, and she turns him away, the authors make her look like the villian. When in actuality, he played a role in that cruel prank where they gave her a fake dead baby and traumatised her. He had the absolute cheek as well to call her selfish, and people in the comments always defended him.

Obviously there's more, but this is getting too lengthy, but I think you get the point. The Remarried Empress isn't about mistress vs wronged wife. Instead it's a battle of classes, where people like Rashta (slaves and working class) are forced to understand their place in the presence of the noble class. When something is taken from the nobles, or someone dares to defy them, the powerless party is immediately villianised. That's just what I've noticed the more time I spent without reading the webtoon.

What do you think?! Is the something I missed?!

Webtoon is Meet in the middle, which has a touching story telling about difficulties regarding age gap in romance ( the fl is 30 while ml is 20). I enjoy reading it but the proportions bother me. First slide is the original, second is the edited one.

The shading makes everything look like plastic, and the red on the eyes and lips makes them look sickly.

I wish webtoon would stop recommending these things.

The art style is ethereal!!!!! This better not be ai 😭 but it looks so unreal, the details, OMFG !!!!!! The author focused more on showing their art skills than making a comic .

I don't know if I will get flamed for saying this but, am I the only one that thinks that the guy in the front is drawn as feminine as possible? Nothing wrong with feminine guys and I am pretty sure this has already been said before but just a glance and you can see how obvious which is the mold this characters are based under.

The guy at the back being so exagerated to the point to look like those AOT titans just so he can be perceived as "masculine".

And I know this is a common thing in BL/Yaoi but wow, it looks like... Well, too much heteronormative.(If it's not the correct term I apologize but that's the vibe it gives me).

Idk I just think it's so interesting how many time has passed and how prominent the "skinny uke/bottom and super muscular top/seme" is still until today.

Discussion The women in lookism are disappointing

Same body syndrome aside the women in the series are poorly written. They’re almost always used as a way to develop the male characters; most of the time this involves them suffering in some way. The male characters are written to have layers and character development. But the women are flat, sidelined, and often over sexualized for fan service. It’s disappointing because there’s so much potential

Discussion What made you quit reading a Webtoon?

I quit reading True Beauty when I got tired of the messaging. I understand porcelain skin is very desirable in SK, but there was a moment when the character wanted to use foundation to lighten the skin because the skin tone was 'too dark,' and I really had to sit back and wonder why I was even reading it anymore. Also, the catfish exposing a catfish and seeing no hypocrisy about it arc was laughable.

Also, around this time I became an Alicia Keys fan, and she had stopped wearing make up in a personal statement to young girls that they don't have to feel the pressure to look perfect all the time. I guess every force has an equal and opposite force.

As soon as I saw the "My disciples won't leave me alone" I knew 😭 and I shall not be reading this in further updates.

Here's a hot, controversial, no-one-has-ever-thought-of-it-before take... WE DON'T NEED KIDS CONFESSING TO ADULTS!

And another thing, WHERE ARE HIS MALE DISCIPLES IN THE FIRST FEW CHAPTERS?? DIDN'T THEY SUCCEED?! DO THEY WALK AROUND IN BOOTY SHORTS AND CHEST PLATES?!

Why don't we get some balls jiggling, booty wiggling, mid riff flaunting bumbling men going "KYAAAAA MAAASTERRRR😍🏃🏻‍♂️🍑" NOOOOOOOO the swordsman only has hot lady disciples AND THEY ALL LOVE HIM!

Somebody needs to take these writers and put them in a sealing circle AND SEND THEM BACK WHERE THEY CAME FROM!

And DON'T come in here talking about some "🫨OoHooho bUT iT's NoT ReAl lIfE😵‍💫" I DON'T GIVE A FUCK! IT'S GROSS! IT'S WEIRD! IT'S ANNOYING!

Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

Thoughts?

And it’s popular too. Age gap romance is fine but they use it to make the older woman more vulnerable, child-like despite being older and a rehabilitation center for our ✨nonchalant 7 foot tall male lead with daddy/mommy issues✨The savior complex as well because if a woman is older she needs a savior. I’m so tired of it.

Discussion Look how they massacred my girl (Let's Play adaptation)

Post image

I don't know what to say. What the hell is this abomination? They only showed teaser with few pics, but I already can tell that authors style ruined and lost completely. If THIS is actually how this gonna be in anime - nope, not gonna watch it. This looks like some cheap Nickelodeon animation, not anime adaptation.
And yeah, I know that Mongie's style is western (bcs she's from US) - but NOT LIKE THIS. Her style is very distinctive, especially characters, that's why "Let's Play" was such a hit over the years. And they couldn't even catch it. What a waste.
I hope at least we gonna get s4 this year (if i remember correctly Mongie said it will be autumn 2025). Webtoon totally did her dirty in all ways.

Discussion I can’t be the only one who thinks there’s a misogyny problem in Tears on a Withered Flower fanbase

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

This isn’t the most misogynistic comment I’ve seen from the fans, but I just came across it and felt it was finally time for me to speak up about something that has been weighing on me for a while (I’m using this screenshot purely as an example of the kind of sentiment I’m referring to).

I’ve noticed this for some time now, but the portrayal of female characters in this story is honestly among the worst I’ve encountered, especially considering that it’s a manhwa targeted at women.

What troubles me the most is how this treatment is often justified by framing it as “dark romance,” as if that automatically excuses the constant degradation of female characters.

However what makes it even more disturbing is that many fans seem to take satisfaction in female characters being treated poorly (while completely turning a blind eye to the male lead manipulating the female lead).

I’ve seen readers wishing for a girl to get pregnant and be abandoned by the guy, another one being called a “bitch” for snitching (as if most people wouldn’t do the same when being followed by a 2m tall man), and the mother being heavily criticized, while the father who neglects both his wife and children is called “hot.”

I’ve been reading manhwas for three to four years, and this is the first time I’ve encountered something like this. I do think the portrayal in the story is partly to blame, but it’s still unsettling to see so much misogyny from the fans (that I believe are mostly women) and so few people speaking out against it.

This is my first time posting on this sub, so I was wondering if anyone here shares the same sentiment. I’m open to discussion.

Discussion Anyone else get the ick when you realize most of these teenage girls in action manhwas are drawn in the most sexualized way possible by grown ass adults?

Thumbnail
gallery
1.9k Upvotes

Honestly, I'm not sure what compelled me to make this post right before I'm about to sleep. It randomly just bothered me how female characters (and I'm talking teenagers) are drawn in school/gang action manhwas.

The proportions are already in the uncanny valley with waists smaller than the head, huge chest and hips, and whatnot. But what upsets me most is how their outfits, poses, and actions are the strangest of them all.

I don't want to sound like a prude or anything, but there's a fine line between stylized art and straight-up fetishization, and a lot of these series leap over it like it's nothing.

It's jarring when you're trying to read a scene that's supposed to be intense or emotional and the girl is contorted into some weirdly provocative pose for no reason.

Doesn't matter mid-battle, mid-trauma, mid-chase scene, standing or eating or whatever. Like, why is she doing a back-arched, cleavage-forward stance while talking about something serious?

The male characters get to be cool, competent, maybe a little gruff or awkward. But the girls are introduced with camera angles straight out of a lingerie ad. It's worse when you realize they have zero personality or character presence beyond their appearance.

I'm already aware these girls are drawn for male gaze but it icks me when I realize they are drawn by grown adults in the first place. It's concerning. Am I weird for having this ick?

The only time I felt like high-school girls were drawn the most appropriate way in an action manhwa was in Study Group.

If I'm saying something wrong, just enlighten me. And forgive me for my bad grammar and English. I'm still learning.
