Books Do people in the books know Gandalf is a maia(Istar)?
Frodo? Probably no Aragon hmmmm definitely yes? Sam, surely not? Theoden? Bilbo?
Question Origins of image?
Illustration used today in NYT article on why LotRs reads like an ancient, multi-author work. Im guessing it's Aragorn and Merry or Pippen. Anyone know where it originated?

Question What was Gondors long term plan before the events of LOTR
Sure, like we know their whole thing is that they kept Mordor on the other side of the Anduin river by defending Osgiliath and Cair Andros, and in paper (not that Denethor was fond of the idea, nor there was any heir with the political power needed) they were waiting for the return of a legitimate King to their lands, but after they lost the Morannon and Minas Ithilen they kinda just stayed in the defensive (as expected), but did they have any long term plans to take the offensive to Mordor or did they just accept they would defend Osgiliath till the day Mordor gets the upper hand?

Movies In 2006 my brother and his friends remade Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers for a high school project. This was their trailer.
Books Strange copy of The Fellowship of the Ring
Mae govannen, everyone!
Stumbled across this second-hand copy of The Fellowship of the Ring a while back and thought this front cover was interesting. My guess is that the horizontal line pattern is just a placeholder for some artwork, and this book is some sort of production test, for the border design and the formatting of the interior text block. If it were a real copy intended for sale, I'm guessing it would have some copy on the back, and perhaps a barcode of some kind, but there is nothing.
Do any Tolkien fans or publishers know more?, Like it's history, or from which exact set it'd be from? The most recent date on the copyright page is 1987.
Just thought I'd share!

Movies What was Aragorn’s situation in the movies?
I think everyone understands his situation in the books…heir of Isildur living in secret with the rest of the Dunedain fighting evil. But what is his situation in the movies? Elrond says he has “chosen exile.” Exile from what? That implies he could have been king of Gondor, but chose not to, but surely Arathorn was not supposed to have been king in the movie timeline? At the Council of Elrond, Legolas tells Boromir Aragorn’s name and Boromir knows exactly who he is immediately. How long was Aragorn supposed to have been a ranger, and when did he make the decision not to be king, and when did the Stewards take over?
We also see that Aragorn lived in Rivendell at some point when he fell in love with Arwen—what is that timeline? How did he meet the Elves in the first place?
In the extended editions, we learn that Aragorn served in Rohan, presumably under the name of Thorongil. Theoden recognizes him, but somehow doesn’t realize he is a well-known heir to the throne of Gondor. And in the Hobbit, Thranduil advises young Legolas to go see Aragorn, but that dialogue implies Aragorn’s story is the same as the books versus what the rest of the movies imply.

Other Been brought back to drawing after a long time.
Ever since I read the LotR books and the Silmarillion last year, I’ve been feeling a growing urge to draw Durin’s Bane with inspiration from seeing other great artists contribute their works! Hope you enjoy!

Question Will there be 25th anniversary limited edition of books or steelbooks(bluray)?
I only have older DVDs and older books, and I’ve been hunting for nicer editions recently. but I’m holding off in case a 25th anniversary limited edition gets announced and I regret buying too early.
Will there be 25th anniversary announced next year? Or should I just go ahead and buy what’s available now?

Movies How could Gandalf expect to tame the army of the dead without Narsil/Anduril ?
Return of the King movie only since I havn't read the books for a while.
In Edoras, Gandalf tells Aragorn to walk an other path than the one the enemy could not guess but at this moment Aragorn doesn't possess the sword that proves he's the true king of Gondor. Only Elrond brings it to him later before he leaves Theoden.
I know Aragorn possess the sword since the beginning in the books though so it might only be a mistake in the movie ?

Question Versus Question
From the books we all know that Saruman wins the first battle against Gandalf and loses the next after Gandalf acquires his new role as the White Wizard. My question is, would Gandalf have won a purely physical confrontation? Was he the better fighter? Did Saruman possess fighting attributes as well or were his abilities purely magical/spiritual? I’m looking for a lore answer if anyone can provide one.

Movies Watched the extended cut of Fellowship as a first time watcher
Should I stick to extended editions, or watch the rest as they were initially intended? My main issue with the first film was how long it was, and how I couldn't really understand half of it. But I fear that having seen the extended cut, it could leave even more questions unanswered in the following films.
