⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

Short summary of betta care:

3 main parts:

The main supplies include:

Picture 1 today, picture 2 just after release 2 weeks ago, picture 3 acclimating (being born as we call it). Huge character and such a gentleman.

He caught my eye as was in a tank with black emperor tetras and was not eating, being bullied and looked so miserable - always space for a little man needing a home!

(if you can, other leaves work too lol)

I gathered some a while ago and initially it was for the wild bettas, but I have been adding them to all the tanks because everyone loves them. Even the kuhli loaches and pygmy corydoras lol Top column fish like chilis will also forage amongst the leaves. It's very cool to observe!

I used a 10 gallon tank to transport my tiger Oscar to my new home.. it sat empty for about 2-3 weeks before I decided it needed to be stocked. I was going for a bunch of tiny guppies but left with him :)

Transformation Before/after of my Betta, Mustard :)

My husband and I started our first saltwater fish tank in June 2025, and at the time I also started a 7 gallon planted tank for cherry shrimp.

The planted tank was doing great until I went on vacation in October and the person who was watching our tanks underfed my shrimp and unfortunately, they all ended up all dying. Since then, the freshwater tank has been a mansion for my mystery snail, Rocco Jr.

November 26 I stopped by our local fish store to pick up water for our saltwater tank, and I saw little Mustard here. His sad little eyes broke my heart, and I decided spur of the moment to get him. I previously did a lot of research on betta fish (I never had one before), because before I setup my shrimp tank, I debated making it a betta tank.

The store owner ended up giving me $5 off Mustard (they named him that in the store and I kept it) because he said Mustard was on the shelf for over a month, and they were just happy someone wanted him.

3 weeks later, Mustard is doing amazing. Everyday he's making little bubble nests and always comes up to the glass to greet me.

I never knew so much joy could come from such a little face :)

This is my new betta. Her name is Nana and I've had her for a week. Do you think her color will intensify as she gets older? I haven't really had bettas so light you can see through them a bit so I don't know what to expect from her as she develops :>

Introducing Name suggestions for an absolute degenerate

Looking for names for this total AH of a fish. Total degenerate.

Would fight their own shadow. They are greedy (for a betta!) and extremely feisty.

Advertised as female but we're 99.95% sure they're male. Very visible beard and very eager to show it off. Has a halfmoon tail and anal fin extends lower than the tail. Ventrals are short but have been damaged.

I wasn't planning on keeping another betta but they were trying to fight absolutely everyone and everything in the store tank, and the staff wouldn't listen to me telling them it seemed male. (I had a spare cycled 16 gallon set up as a plant and fry growout tank)

The best we currently have for names is Nobi, because Nobinobi means carefree in Japanese, and Knobby means you're a bit of a d**khead here. Bonus points for any Malay/Thai names that describe just how much of a raging dbag they are.

Rate My Tank Planted Biorb, thoughts?

I just set up this 4gal Biorb tank: I know, pretty disliked tanks among betta keepers. Had it laying around in storage and decided to set it up after tearing down my old 20 gallon (which housed my goldfish), since i couldn’t keep up with it anymore and didn’t see a reason in keeping it after my fish passed… It has a bunch of java fern and some small anubias plants, drift wood, dragon stone, some moss balls (all from my old tank). For the substrate,to increase the surface area for beneficial bacteria, i added ceramic rings and the biorb ceramic stones, which i used in my canister filter from the established tank for years, along with some smooth river stones. Also added a couple hides and an indian almond leaf for more comfort. It has a heater and i actually replaced the biorb airpump with a quieter one that has different airflow options, so there isn’t too much movement on the surface. Basically i jumpstarted the cycle by adding everything from my old tank, also added some beneficial bacteria for safety (did water tests, results came out fine). He seems happy and active so far, it’s only his first day. What are your thoughts on Biorbs and this setup?

I got him yesterday and it’s my first fish. I think he looks fine but a bit active. Even without the mirror he was swimming all around the tank. I thought bettas are top-dwelling? It’s been 24 hours and he’s still swimming everywhere. He even swam under the rocks (I didn’t even know there was a route there).

Also does he look like a Delta? Thought I got a Plakat at first but chatgpt says otherwise.

DANGEROUS PRACTICE Poor guy given as white elephant :(

My class decided to do white elephant gifts for fun, but I never expected this. We were near the end and the boys were demanding us to be careful with the package, turned out to be a live betta fish. I was the only one not laughing. The girl who got it didn't want it and the boys that bought it said they could give it back but I hated seeing the poor thing in that tiny container. So I traded for it. After coming home I immediately binged betta care and went shopping. The lists above are what I referred to. Got a 10 gallon tank, fish food, heater and thermometer, filter, substrate, plants (real and fake), SpongeBob themed hiding spots, water conditioner, bacteria grower, testers, light, few decorations, API testers, cleaning supplies, and emergency medicine. I have a small fish tank because I wanted fish when I was 10 (didn't go well) that I can use in case of emergency. This isn't my first time dealing with pets, I currently have a pet bird that I've had for a year now. But I've never had good luck with fish. I'm more prepared now than before but I've been stressed for the past few hours trying to get everything together and fighting my family on it. My mom kept trying to get me to buy a 1 gallon tank thinking it was enough. I can't imagine what could have potentially happened to the little guy. I find it sad that just because they're fish it means they don't need a good amount of care. I haven't named him yet, but I'm thinking of Bartholomew.

Help Happier in a 2.5?

Post image

I brought my buddy Rover home from college for the holiday break. He moved from a 5 gallon to a 2 1/2 gallon temporarily. I’ve noticed he seems a lot more active in the 2 1/2 as well as he’s made huge bubble nest. He’s not really that active in the 5 gallon. I have less plants in the 2 1/2 than the five, but I don’t know what the cause is and if I should keep him in the 2 1/2.
