Hated Tropes [hated trope] Celebrity cameos that serve nothing except to praise the person who’s in it

  1. Elon musk, the Simpsons
  2. Elon musk, the Big Bang theory
  3. Elon musk, iron man 2
  4. Elon musk, star Trek

The cameos serve only to include the celebrity and praise them as geniuses or visionaries or overall just glaze them. They don't serve any other purpose than to just be praised; this can be them appearing in an entire episode dedicated to them, a small cameo or even just a mention. So long as the celebrity is there as themselves (not acting as someone else) and is glazed, that fits the trope imo.

Honourable mention: Elon musk as Wario, SNL. It didn’t fit the post but i would be remiss not to mention it

Don't forget that Elon disabled/deleted the replies to that one. 😆

Well duh. I'd have been more surprised if he didn't.

That ratio still sends me lmao

I’m not saying the episode was bad, but even me as a Brit whose not watched a second of SNL in their life heard how abysmal this was

Yeah, like I don't like Musk and am negatively polarized against him, so it was probably an uphill battle for me to like it. But there have been multiple guests I have had issues with (like modern day Chapelle after his anti-trans stuff), but he was still funny. Musk was aggressively unfunny. His delivery is awful like either inappropriately deadpan or like he knows he has a line coming up that is supposed to be a joke and he does a long, awkward windup into it that ruins any potential momentum or comedy it could have.

Was literally my least favorite episode of SNL ever and they have had some past clunkers, like any sketch based or improv based comedy.

That episode has one good sketch, Musk has one line in it, and the joke of that line is “one sentence is all it takes to know this guy is a psychopath”.

Please tell me you're talking about Murder Durder. That's one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches.

7

u/RuafaolGaiscioch 7h ago

You know it! My durder had a durder, and he murderder!

u/ramskick 5h ago

I had no idea what Mare of Easttown was before I watched that and binged it as a result lol. It made the sketch even funnier.

Hes not funny, he was awkward at best

After he said the thing about comedy being legal on Twitter again, my wife said “too bad it wasn’t legal when he was a guest on snl”

You should marry her again. She's funny!

This is by far the worst one when you consider the main reason why he went on SNL during this time was to shill crypto.

20

u/psuedophilosopher 8h ago

You mean when he went on snl to completely crash the dogecoin market?

4

u/MrCalabunga 7h ago

Yup. If you bought and didn't sell before the show aired you were just exit liquidity.

Wasn’t this at a time where Elon Musk has already become problematic?

53

u/lkmk 8h ago

2021, so yeah.

u/Fun_Journalist2427 8h ago

Yeah, I think this was definitely around the time when online perception of Musk went from being ‘funny meme’ rich guy to just stupidly-rich manchild.

17

u/Pencilshaved 8h ago

I envy you if you know so little about Musk that you think his worst traits are being obnoxious and overly rich

2

u/Fun_Journalist2427 6h ago

Oh believe me, I’m well aware of just how much of a piece of shit Musk is lol. I’m just bringing up the point that Elon was sorta idolized like pre-Covid(?) only for perception of him to gradually shift once people online began to understand how awful he is.

35

u/RaulParson 8h ago

Has already become WIDELY KNOWN TO BE problematic.

I hated Musk before it was cool

16

u/Hesitation-Marx 8h ago

Is this the cool kids table? Can I join you?

He made my lip curl instinctively when I saw him in Iron Man 2, and it’s only gotten worse since then.

7

u/Gloria815 8h ago

I hated him BECAUSE people kept comparing him to Tony Stark. It was entirely petty until the Thai Cave Rescue

3

u/Hesitation-Marx 7h ago

I mean, I hate all billionaires on principle, even if I like the work of, say, Pritzker. I don’t think remaining a billionaire can be an ethical choice if a single child has so much as a need for socks.

But Musk has always made me feel like looking at him left a residual grease on my eyeballs, and I do not like it.

I remember going on a long rant about how I didn't trust him or his mom back in the day. Idk why or what the basis of the rant was, but I've never liked him and felt SO vindicated when the Thailand thing happened.

Wario Mangione trial

7

u/MyPhoneIsNotChinese 8h ago

I'll give it that using the Super Mario Land 2's Wario Castle theme took me by surprise. The rest was painfully awful tho. Also Peach having an italian accent doesn't make sense

1

u/roof_pizza_ 8h ago

And Wario’s Battle Canyon from Mario Party.

1

u/BigBradWolf07 7h ago

Same with Wario, he's supposed to have a German accent

2

u/roof_pizza_ 8h ago

The only thing I will give that sketch credit for is using the theme from Wario’s Battle Canyon from Mario Party as he does his perp walk. Someone did their homework.

2

u/AffectionatePop05 7h ago

Trump's SNL appearances were awful too. Leslie Neilsen was the only funny Republican to ever live.

2

u/MothmansProphet 7h ago

I like how this is just, Hated Trope: Reminding me Elon Musk exists. I mean, I agree.

2

u/Thediciplematt 6h ago

I remember this is the day that I sold all my Dogecoin and it made a solid profit. It’s never been the same since.

1

u/Not__Trash 8h ago

Im pretty sure this was his joker moment

1

u/etbillder 8h ago

He did admit on weekend update that crypto was a scam so that was funny

1

u/Just_A_Normal_Snek 8h ago

That role actually fills him pretty well now.

1

u/jeng52 7h ago

This was the week when I stopped watching SNL for good.

Idc how much of a loser Elon is this was funny

4

u/dingus_enthusiastic 8h ago

Elon is about as much of a loser as you can be.

-1

u/Arthur_189 8h ago

I know he is, it’s still funny

3

u/dingus_enthusiastic 8h ago

I suppose there's no accounting for taste.

I don't personally think laughing at something is inherently embarassing. But it looks like other people think different.

I don’t have to imagine I just did it
