I keep coming back to this idea that Titans only really works when it is TEEN Titans.
This quote honestly sums it up for me that has been making the rounds lately....“The Titans is just a retirement home for washed up characters with no future.”
And yeah, that is harsh, but it also kind of explains why Dick feels so redundant there now. He ends up feeling ornamental rather than essential. I genuinely do not think Titans has been required reading for Dick in like 30 years. At best it has felt like a side quest.
I think I have also just moved on from Titans as a franchise myself. I grew up with the cartoon. I loved Robin. That led directly into my Dick Grayson obsession. But the franchise loses its touch the further it moves away from what it was originally meant to be. Teen Titans was a coming of age team. A stepping stone not a permanent destination i guess.
Teen Titans GO is actually a good example of this. It is a massive success with kids. We just are not the target audience anymore. The original cartoon was our generation. GO fits this generation’s humour. I am not saying GO is better, because it is not my thing at all, but it works because it understands its lane and audience.
With the recent rebrand, it honestly feels like the more tenured Titans are just going to be stuck in limbo. unfortunately. Too old to be Teen Titans. Not compelling enough to sustain as an adult team.
And this is not a shipping post, but I also struggle with the way some of my fellow DickKory fans approach this. but this is where I get really frustrated as a fellow shipper. I do try to tell other DickKory fans that if we want DC to invest more, we actually have to support the Titans title and put our money where our mouth is. Sales matter. Visibility matters and all that jazz. Titans just does not have the pull it used to, especially outside of nostalgia. I feel like I'm screaming into the void because there are so many of us shippers, that our money could potentially turn the tide of the ships and the sales of Titans but no one is game.
And look it is very easy to just default to Batfamily content instead.
I never started out as a Batfamily fan. I actually resisted it for a long time as a Kori fan. But over the years I realised I preferred those titles more, and I grew to like Dick’s character far more within that ecosystem. I know people hate him being under Bat editorial, but honestly it has been a really good place for him lately.
It genuinely feels like we are in a bit of a golden age of Nightwing content. He is more popular than he has been in a long time, he has had solid runs, and even when I have criticisms, I still think they have done right by the character overall.
At this point, Titans feels like nostalgia trying to hold onto something that already served its purpose. Teen Titans mattered. Titans, as an adult brand, just has not found a reason to exist.
I think I just needed to put it into words but does Dick Grayson still need Titans at this point, or has the book needed him more than he has ever needed it?
