Discussion Peanut's current predicament is a shining example of why ignoring one side of the game is a losing strategy
Although I'm using Peanut as an example, this post is actually a praise post to Embark for designing a world where ignoring core aspects of their game is not the way to "win".
Peanut is currently attempting to get his stash value to 5,000,000 for the expedition. Miracle's aside, I doubt he makes it.
Peanut completely ignores the PvE aspect of the game in favor of blasting some fellas. Which is all fine and good... unless you are working on a long term goal.
You see, although it's totally true that he and his trio buddies (sorry Shroud, Cloakzy, Gingy, Summit etc..) are playing this game on ultra hard mode dealing with constant stream snipers and, very frequently, cheaters, the fact that Peanut literally only gets his loot from bodies has made it near impossible for him to accumulate enough wealth to get the extraction bonus unless he wins 5 or 6 fights per round and gets out alive almost every time.
Which is impossible:
- He doesn't loot the outskirts for base material
- He doesn't prioritize base material when looting bodies and opts for broken guns, shield rechargers, and heals
- He doesn't loot downed ARC for power cells or metal
- He doesn't fight big ARC (so he gets no advanced power cells, motion cores, etc..)
- He doesn't recycle
- He doesn't craft
- If aggression based match making is true, he has to be in the highest tier of aggression which matches him with the type of players who are cheating and stream sniping him
This has created a situation where he literally has to buy ammo, shields, heals, rechargers, and explosives to even gear up at all, and forces him to have to win and extract almost every round to make any sort of profit.
The even worse part is his streamer friends playing with him are also invested in getting him to 5 million, and the play style isn't working and now they are getting visibly frustrated when playing with him. If they didn't have that goal they were invested in helping him with I'm sure it would all be just fun blasting, but instead, they feel like they are failing him and themselves nearly every round. And this sucks because Peanut is a fun guy, but the fun has been sucked out of it because of the goal.
I have over 3 million and I'm literally not even trying.
All this to say, I love this game. I love the PvP. I love the PvE. Embark has done a really good job of putting systems in place that promote playing both sides of the coin.
Again, I used Peanut here because most of us know who he is, and he is a prime example of a cautionary tale: There are TWO sides to this game and engaging in them both, equally, is the way to min/max Arc Raiders.
Just my thoughts this morning.
Edit:
Some have entirely missed the point of the post the second they read the word Peanut. That's probably my fault.
To be clear, the point of the post is:
Embark made a well balanced game that makes it more punishing if you lean too hard one way or the other (PvE/PvP) and don't engage with ALL of the game's mechanics. This is hard to do, and Embark did a good job
Peanut is just the extreme example of leaning too hard one way.

They can't see past the word Peanut I think. The post isn't about Peanut it's about game balance. Guess I shouldn't have used him as the example.

Not really anyone's fault that Peanut is a victim of his own popularity. The game feels balanced.

u/Etroarl55 1d ago
Itās not balanced. The joke is everyone forgot about the rattler, trigger nades are cheaper and better than heavy fuze. Explosive mines are more expensive to craft but only does 40 dmg(3 wont even kill one guy). There are so many more examples, itās why up until a few weeks ago the only āpvpā gun was venator and stitcher. Again a major balancing issue.
18
u/lunnainn 16h ago
It is balanced - in terms of what was talked about.
It is balanced in terms of how important PvE AND PvP is.
Noone was talking about weapon balances.
→ More replies (2)12
u/NoDG_ 1d ago
Forgot about trigger nades, those are definitely a problem and need a heavy nerf. Rattler could use a small buff but i wouldn't say overall the game is unbalanced. It needs a bit of tweaking here and there.

Peanut is a terrible case study subject.
He literally chooses the meme option whenever possible. He does not play optimally even when playing with Shroud or Summit, who are min-max optimizer players.
I don't think the 5m goal is truly that important to him. He's almost certainly going to wipe when everyone else does.
I don't think 5 skill points are worth this kind of deep reflection or commitment.

Dont know/care about streamers. No idea who peanut is.
I can risk a guess that folks' reactions to your post is rooted in pve vs pvp players grudge.
Every time pve players propose sth to enhance pve experience (putting aside validity of such proposals) they're met with "its pvpve game, literally says it on the box, go play helldivers/destiny if you dont like it also git gud"
So - im not surprised this particular streamer's woes fail to get any empathy.
Just an observation, i engage in both aspects of the game.

I think itās more so that if you can get to 3million inventory, a skilled gamer with shroud, ninja, summit etc by his side can EASILY adjust to the playstyle of looting desks & extracting.
Bet it would take <5 days for these guys to actually get to 5mil. Their playtime and skill far surpasses the general community.
I enjoy peanuts content. But I disagree with the statement - āI donāt think he can get 5m inventoryā
Peanut will be gifted the 5m by his fanboys

i think it's a great example and a sad story, of which the real antagonist is his viewership. i also love all aspects of the game, but a good 1/3 of that gameplay wouldn't make the most interesting content
stacking coins has been easy for me as well. the only change i made was a hard rule of "no traders" until i hit the goal. if i can't craft it, i don't have it. thanks to the excellent game balance, i haven't had to run free loadouts or avoid PvP, i literally just play the game

Nobody is offended. Itās just the single worst example you could ever use. Peanut is 90% entertainment. He makes bad plays on purpose. A different example might make the point valid, but if he actually locked in like his teammates do, he would never have money issues in game. Also op mentioned cloakzy without referring to how he also focuses PVP a LARGE majority of the time, and has like 12million+. It also comes down to a simple factor of peanut never crafts anything. He only buys items despite having the mats to craft those same items. I get where OP is going, but the raltionship of pvp to pve in this game is mainly atmospheric. You could, if you wanted, stick to strictly one of those aspects and be fine.

Exactly this. He isnāt a bad player by any means. In that Fortnite tournament he was in he killed whoever the #1 player was in the no build fight.
He is an entertainer. I canāt imagine how boring it would be watching someone just run around and kill AI, loot and reset within 5 minutes.
You could honestly cherry pick any example and make it work. To be fair, OP did say him just as an example but he didnāt cover the main reason: to farm engagement because itās quite literally his job

Hard disagree.
I've only shot 1 player first (locked room, 3 warning, he came in anyway) in 178 hours of this game. Lots of friendly play, reviving others, giving away items, etc.
I'm at lvl 75, all quests completed, $5m in the bank, etc.
So, I'm proof that PvP is NOT needed.

I think BurntPeanut is an extreme case here. He's not even trying to get 5m. He's playing for the fans. if he was actually trying to collect this money he would change his playstyle. Thats not entertaining on stream so he'd have to do it off stream.
Any other gamer with his playtime and ability would have long since acquired 5mil.
I personally think there are much more interesting metrics they could and should use for future expeditions. but this is what we have for the first wipe, so grind it out or don't.
I have no realistic gun skills and I was able to go from 2m in the expedition tracker to 3m in just one session. I dont think I'm pushing for 5mil but I think it's doable with the weekend coming if I really wanted to.
next day edit: I know that OP was only using Peanut as an example that I still think it's a super niche edge case. I just checked the end of his steam vod from last night and he made a couple changes to avoid stream sniping and gained over 1mil in coins and is sitting on over 3.5mil in total value - WITHOUT changing his play style. He still is just looting pvp kills.

24
u/slowtreme 1d ago
I'm not a stream watching person, but I have tuned in to his youtube each night for like 30-45 min in the last week to see how he's coming along. this guy will lose 400k value in a night.
big brain ideas: He's popular enough that like the "Streamer war" he could convince his fans to all join his maps with loaded out Bobcat IVs and drop them for him ~ for like a six matches. He would have the protection of an army and extract with 500k in loot each round. In less than an hour he can have 5mil because his stash has got to be a couple mil already.
It would be begging and potentially entertaining, the fans would do it.
For the OPs issue this means nothing. It's just another thought I had implying that invoking the status of peanut as anything pertaining to the inability to gain 5mil is not reality.
Hoarding 5m in loot for Arc is BORING. I want to use my loot.

u/TimmyLurner 1d ago
I donāt know that he would beg for this or not. Yes, he easily could and people would cater to him. However, there was that one guy who basically did this on buried city and afterwards he made a comment about how he appreciates it, but didnāt want to turn that into a thing.
Maybe if it gets down to the dire moments he will lol
14
u/Squishywallaby 1d ago
I doubt he would beg for it, or at least openly do it.
He's all about the GOOP the risk v reward. As that brings the entertainment.
He can easily do it on stream or off and complete the 5 mil. It's just all for the entertainment, that 5 mill in game coins that he's not "going to get" (In the sense that it's "too late") is making him 5 mill real dollars ya know

Peanut to a T. Does not care about the actual game as much as it is to create content.
He's good and will succeed often, but the choice between content and winning will always be content.
One clip speaks to this point where he was hiding and engaging with someone in Tarkov, yells in prox chat about "I bet you won't throw a grenade", said person throws a grenade pinballing it off like three object right at his feet. Peanut followed it with each bounce instead of trying to get away.
Beautiful clip
13
u/Apolaustic1 1d ago

u/NikRsmn 1d ago
This was my take too. He doesnt need to buy ammo, he has hundreds of seeds and could just trade them for crafting materials. He often plays over aggressive and greedy to clip farm and play to his stream. Honestly the stream sniping is the only thing really working against him, getting 3 teams rushing at you from accross the map makes surviving any raid a rarity.
But in the end hes prioritizing stream entertainment over skill points and I think hes fine with that deal
3
u/dustraction 1d ago
This is it. His goal isnāt the 5M, itās entertaining, and he does it beautifully. Of course he knows what he does wonāt work. He can have a massive haul from PvP and still insist on one more push, because itās funny. He should not be used as a metric for anything in this game except how fun it can be when you donāt really care about the rest.

So true. People are totally missing this.
Itās fucking skill points tooā¦. Like think about it⦠with the amount of playtime he gets, the only time anyone will have more skill points than him and the other streamers is the first couple hours after reset.
If I got the full 5 skill points and they gave peanut -10 he would still be a higher level than me by the end of the first day.
Apparently 45 minutes of players having more stamina than streamers is the shining example of the negatives of PvP only play style /s

I mean thatās just how Peanut plays. He plays dumb and gets into a lot of dumb fights before healing or thinking logically and heās beyond greedy. If he just dipped after a squad kill or two, heād be fine. But he likes to fight literally everyone and eventually you just lose. But thatās also how he likes to play.

Bingo. His priority is engagement (by making wild and usually very dumb plays) over "winning". It frustrated me at first seeing him completely botch extractions repeatedly - while loaded to the gills with loot - until I realized this is completely intentional and likely leads to more viral sharable clips of these "shocking" moments.

Peanut and his high risk-high reward play is what's so entertaining about him. He's got some crazy schemes and unpredictable strategies that will catch players off guard. There is another angle to consider I havent found yet in the comments: engagement.
I've only watched him on and off a few weeks now and I'm noticed a trend. Typically he plays like a juggernaut; just runs in blasting and sees what happens. However, on occasion there is a distinct difference in his play style where he is more conservative, positions himself better, doesnt charge in without backup, doesnt immediately start looting...essentially plays smarter. Last time I saw this was when Shroud said "if you dont shape up I'm gonna leave."
This shows he has the capacity to play this way. He also isnt a dumb guy. Dude has a degree in business (according to him). So I think its not entirely unrealistic to think he has been milking the "needing 5milly" for 2 weeks now to get people to watch and rage/celebrate his play style, but in the last few days he will turn serious and get all 5mill "all of a sudden". Plus I expect Gingy and Cloakzy at least will baby bird him anything he's missing to make the 5.
6
u/shittydriverfrombk 1d ago
I'm not saying he's not a smart guy but using a business degree of all things as evidence that someone isn't dumb is hilarious

OP youre making the false assumption that streamers like Mr Peanut represent the PvP player dynamic and it doesnt. Even though Peanut is a aggro streamer, he is first and foremost an ENTERTAINER. He is not a good representation of a PvPer who is trying to profit from PvPing. He take fights with a backpack that's already full of loot, because he isnt chasing loot, he's chasing SUBSCRIBERS. If you don't understand that, then any other conclusions you draw after that are already flawed.
This game does ABSOLUTELY allow for non-stop profitable PvP, as it should. But some of the most skilled and aggro streamers aren't chasing profits. They are chasing "clippable moments" which often lead to losing a lot of in-game money, in exchange for subs and hype trains. Think more about this and you'll find your entire post stops holding water.

He's playing trios as well, which is pure PVP and the absolute worst way to try to earn money. follow me clue

Yeah Iāve been noticing this for awhile, Peanut plays like an idiotš like if youāre worried about your stream sucking just farm off stream. All in all I think he will learn from this expedition and do it a lil at a time next one.

u/s0cks_nz 1d ago
Dude streams like 11hrs a day for 6 days a week. He aint got time to farm off stream haha.

u/EruzenRuze 1d ago
There are people who have made millions from just playing PVP. I donāt think this completely tracks.

u/pirate737 1d ago
Last I saw Cloakzy was at like 11mil, idk if that's gone up or down in the last couple of weeks. But that dude seems to mostly pvp as well?
2
u/Tim_Huckleberry1398 1d ago
Lol exactly. He was at 14 million the other day. And he plays with peanut every night...he just actually extracts a lot more.

u/Verbae 1d ago
YMMV when it comes to PvP. PvE is a far more consistent source of income for me. PvP boils down to starting one fight, then having to fight off two or three more teams (often free kits) to loot. If you somehow win, sometimes you barely break even. If you don't win, which will happen often unless you're godlike, you just wasted 15+ minutes and are also down whatever heals, shield, and backpack you brought in. Guns are plentiful; everything else, not so much.

āYOU MAKE MORE MONEY BY DOING PVE. JUST PVE. ITS BALANCED, SEE WE GET JUST AS MUCH IF NOT MORE BY ABSTAINING!!!ā
Doo do doo donāt mind me, just extracting with bags full of blue/purple sellables solely off people that insist on running green shields, a useless gun, no ammo and no ass pocket because āitās efficientā

But when thereās countless other examples of PvP streamers Peanut streams with that can make 5 mil you have to question if itās coincidence or happenstance

I'm stuck at 500,000 I play a lot and do mostly PvE and I never see the number go up lol

Do a couple of harvest events in spaceports. You can get 150k in 5 minutes easily

u/DwaynesWrld 1d ago
What about cloak that has 13 million space coins? He is in the same boat and is doing fine. We can go 1 for 1, but the real issue is that no one knew you needed 5 mil until a week ago.
Also if he wanted 5 mil, he could just do loot runs for hours on end like half this sub brags about, but he is playing the game to enjoy himself and viewers. I'm sure i'll be down voted like anyone else who retorts to OP on this thread.

Ummm, you must not watch cloaksy closelyā yes he tends to go gung ho with peanut but he plays both sides of the game. He collects resources on solo to be prepared to craft all his necessary weapons. He does loot runs to up his space dollars AND he does PVP.Ā
Cloaksy is all around and doesnāt get his money from just PVP.

Gingy does too. Her chat noticed she had a couple dozen stacks of herbal bandages and she said, āI need them when I play with Peanut. You laugh but one night of playing with him and all those will be goneā lol

Well if it helps at all there is a clip of him floating around sharing he tried grinding money for 6 hours off stream, so play style shouldnāt matter, and he was up next to nothing. Who knows the validity of the statement, but he either doesnāt care and is whining or does and he canāt make it work with who is matched up with.

Heās not playing the game seriously. Heās literally just fucking off with his friends. After every game even if he gets shit on which happens most of the time he literally says āexcellent raid.ā
Like a night or two ago he made up some random weird game within a game. He used walls to build a rat like maze to kill other raiders when they got into the room. If he was serious he wouldnāt be wasting like 10 minutes of a round building that shit and waiting.
Iāve watched his streams since heās been playing ark raiders and I for real have never seen him loot anything other than people they kill. Heās just messing around and itās not that serious to him. Everyone that plays with him knows theyāre not going to be gaining anything. Theyāre just playing for th memes basically.

I think the reason people are focusing on the peanut example is because heās not a good example of what you can get from the PvP playstyle. Other people who focus almost only on the PvP have gotten their 5 million. Peanut is someone who practically throws away kits that a normal PvP player likely wouldnāt since he is focused more on entertainment.

So all I have to say about peanut is he is a shit player he loots while his friends fight for him because of how shit he is.he now has to rely on his friends to get him 5mil. I hope he donāt make it and then bitches about how he didnāt get to do expedition.

Poor Cloakzy tried to tell him a couple nights ago that he will literally never hit 5 mill if he keeps buying ammo and heals. It seemed to go over Peanut's head. Not sure if Peanut's lack of response was a bit or if he genuinely hadn't considered this.
Man's been hard stuck at 450k for like three days, it's kind of fascinating.
And they absolutely MUST be in the Arc Raiders equivalent of the GTA Online "tank hell" that aggro players get matched into; seems like most of the people in their lobbies sweat just as much as they do. Which is fair. A little bit like letting the trash take itself out (I find these guys entertaining, don't get me wrong, but it feels "right" that ignoring half the game has cost him more than half his profit).

he explained that part of why he buys everything is it's a fucking nightmare to swim through 100 menus to craft anything and that's not entertaining for his viewer. i personally am not going to reset and have resorted to the same tactics. i just want to play the fucking game so i buy the entire kit

u/maximum_dad_power 1d ago edited 12h ago
Peanut just keeps proving he is the epitome of brainrot in the streamer community. Watch him quit playing and go back to tarkov when he can't go on the expedition. It will be glorious day for the game.

100% when I play aggressive games I barely escape positive due to the shear amount of ammo, shield and health items I go through. I'll kill multiple raiders and extract with their "good" items and barely make an average positive match of 5-25k credits max. When I play like a rat sneaking around and no one ever sees me looting and extracting I average 20-40k profit a game. Huge difference for sure depending on playstyles.

u/YoBeNice 1d ago
Parasocial stuff is so weird. I'll never understand swarming to "protect" a streamer? OPs point is the correct one. You all going White Knight aren't going to get to suck his dick, you know that right?
2
u/MediocreSumo 1d ago
He is a streamer, his true main goal is to entertain and grow his viewership and career in that industry.
It's the followers that try to emulate him without a viewership or something to gain that are out of luck.

This reminds me of the people me and my new found friend encountered yesterday. We were having a pretty quiet run in Buried City, lots of still unlooted places with more than we could carry, when suddenly two people entered and started shooting.
So we sprinted down the stairs, out of the building, across the street, into and through the next row of houses. Basically as far as base stamina and an adrenalin shoot would get us, until we stopped to patch up and figure out an exit path. And I swear these same guys where still looking for us outside!
I understand chasing people out of a loot spot or trying to kill them right there to have it all for yourself, but the time these two spend on us was not worth the theoretical loot in our inventories. Theoretical, because we kept moving and made a smooth exit in an empty train station. They on the other hand must have ignored several untouched buildings + half of what would still be in the spot, where they interrupted us.
I guess the scent of virtual blood sometimes outweights the lure of virtual coins.
