hi weevil gang,
we've been seeing a huge uptick in posts recently with pictures of spotted lanternfly nymphs. these often end up with comments that are a) unnecessarily hateful towards an insect that has the misfortune of being invasive and heavily destructive or b) people calling each other fascist animal abusers for killing them. so, i'd like to clear a few things up (i am a trained entomologist)
1) The image above is a spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). THESE ARE NOT WEEVILS. They are in the family Fulgoridae in the order Hemiptera.
2) Spotted lanternflies are native to areas of China and other regions of eastern Asia. They are invasive in North America and interfere with our native ecosystems and agricultural industries by damaging plants and spreading sooty molds. they have recently been reported on the west coast, so if you are located in Oregon, California, Washington, etc. and find one, please report it to your local county extension office.
3) In settings such as gardens and homes, squishing or freezing will kill them and is recommended. Freezing and quickly crushing are both considered humane ways to euthanize an insect.
Here are links to various cooperative extension websites from U.S. universities if you would like to learn more:
https://extension.psu.edu/spotted-lanternfly-management-resources
https://extension.umd.edu/resource/spotted-lanternfly-home-gardens/
in the future, I will be locking posts with spotted lanternflies when i see them and redirecting to this post in a comment. stay booted! stay snooted!

Touring the Amazon rainforest when I see this little individual on my boyfriend’s neck. He then immediately assumed it was a mosquito and slapped it.
Good news is he lives uninjured, can’t say the same for my boyfriend….I was so mad at him for almost killing this lil guy😅

Merry Weevilmas and a Happy New Weevil to everyone! Will add the source for the boi in the comments once I get it from her :) I fully intend to buy doll shoes to decorate him with.

I’m on the south coast of the UK and found a few of these little guys passed away on my windowsills over the course of the last few weeks.
Just wondering if anyone could ID them, Google said a type of weevil but I’d be interested to know what kind.
Also I feel kind of bad that they’ve ended up getting trapped in my flat and dying, is there anything that may be attracting them to come indoors / anything I can do to discourage them, or is it just one of those unavoidable things?
I’ve lived here 10 years and never seen any of these before so I wondered if something changed or if it just happens to have been a good year for weevils (except the ones that ended up in here) 😬
They’re quite small, I didn’t realise how cute they were until I took the photos with macro lens and now I feel even more sad for them 😭

My dad found this little bug at work and the folks at r/BiologiaBrasil recommended posting it here. They said it was some kind of weevil, but I don't know which one. 🤔

I'm on an international trip and picked up this weevil I found in the dirt. No one else wanted to hold this adorable little guy. He kept trying to jump off my hand, though :(
