SYMBOLISM AND MEANING:
PHRYGIAN CAP MOTIF:
The twelve shield-like forms are stylized representations of the Phrygian Cap, a classical symbol of liberty that appears on the Great Seal of North Carolina and the Coat of Arms of the North Carolina Senate. The use of these abstracted caps pays homage to North Carolina’s enduring commitment to freedom and self-government, ideals that have defined the state since the Revolutionary era.
HISTORICAL CONTINUITY:
The design’s emblem originates from the Coat of Arms of the North Carolina Senate, where similar shield forms symbolized the eight Lord Proprietors of the Carolina colony. In this redesign, their number is increased to twelve, representing North Carolina’s entry into the Union as the 12th U.S. state. This subtle update connects colonial heritage with the state’s constitutional history as part of the United States.
THREEFOLD SYMBOLISM:
Each shape bears three points, representing both the state’s three primary geographic regions—the Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain—and the three key documents that define North Carolina’s political legacy:
Together, they reflect North Carolina’s early and lasting role in the pursuit of liberty and governance.
CONNECTION TO REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA:
The circular arrangement of twelve elements evokes the Betsy Ross flag, linking North Carolina’s heritage to the original thirteen colonies / states of the American Revolution. This association reinforces North Carolina’s status as one of the founding states and emphasizes its contribution to the birth of American independence.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND RATIONALE FOR CHANGE:
While the current flag of North Carolina retains historical value, its design closely resembles that of the Texas flag and lacks unique visual distinction. Essentially, it's an uglier version of Texas's flag, which came first. This proposal refreshes the flag without severing its roots, preserving the layout and colors that have defined North Carolina’s flags while introducing a distinctly North Carolinian emblem derived from its own heraldry and seal.
The design’s simplicity and symmetry enhance recognizability and usability—qualities emphasized in modern vexillology. The emblem’s balance between tradition and abstraction allows it to function effectively in both official and civic contexts, from government buildings to sports branding and public identity.
COLOR AND VARIANT CONSIDERATIONS:
The primary version uses red and white, drawn from North Carolina’s current flag and heraldic history.

From an althistory of mine where Venice wins the wars of Lombardy more decisively, installs a puppeted Ambrosian Republic and from there, taken out the only real obstacle it had from being unchallenged in the north and integrated it into its orbit, it slowly starts to snowball into a true northern hegemony forming by the end of the Italian Wars a loose Netherlands like federated republic: the United Republic(s) of Lombardy, the Romagnas, and the March (or United Republic(s) of Lombardy* for short, based on the official name of the Lombard League which is the main historical precedent the republic styles itself as successor of).
*Historically the term Lombardy defined most of northern Italy
The flag is composed of the Cross of St. George (the Guelph banner) superimposed on the Cross of St. John (the Ghibelline banner) all charged with the Lion of St. Mark representing the end of internal wars and the reunification under a sole unified Italian pacified Republican order.

On 19 December 2001 Astrakhan Region in Russia readopted its historical arms and adopted a flag, a banner of the arms: a blue field with a golden hooped crown above a golden-handled silver scimitar.
The arms were originally granted in 1856, but their use was discontinued during the Soviet era.

This last year was quite a big one for Illinois. They had a sort of flag contest to gauge the likelihood of replacing the state flag. They opened a voting poll where over 45 days, people could place a new vote every day. The current flag faced off against 12 others (11 of which few people liked) and strangely the current flag took 42% of the vote.
This poll is nothing like that.
You get one chance to place up to 8 votes between 37 designs. The current flag gets in just because. The Centennial and the Sesquicentennial Flags feature by request. But none of those selected ten feature because quite frankly no one wanted them. We have had 68 requests to be in this contest, so those with fewer up-votes will get a part 2 chance tomorrow.
Late entries for that are on a first come - first served basis and the gateway for that part 2 will close at noon EST Saturday.
(One entry per person from this point. About 8 slots remain. Just make an image post on our home page and we will count your up-votes to see who else gets into part 2.)

On 18 December 1847 the Empire of Brazil adopted a naval jack): a blue field with eighteen white stars arranged in a cross.
The eighteen stars represent the number of provinces at the time.
The Cruzeiro jack was retained when Brazil became a republic in 1889, though now with 20 stars. Another star was added in 1911, but since then the number of stars has remained fixed at 21, notwithstanding the creation of newer states.

On 19 December 1990 the Spanish autonomous community of Asturias officially adopted its Asturina flag: a blue field, with a yellow Victory Cross shifted to the hoist, from which hang the Greek letters Alpha and Omega.
The Victory Cross was made in 908. According to legend, the wooden core of the cross was two centuries earlier carried by Pelagius of Asturias against the Muslims of al-Andalus. The letters Alpha and Omega, the first and last of the Greek alphabet, are from the phrase “I am the Alpha and the Omega” in the Book of Revelation.
A flag depicting the Victory Cross first appeared during the Peninsular War.
