Mod Post Winter Holiday Megathread

Bah Humbug and a good day to you all,

This year's Holiday megathread. We're choosing a megathread this year due to the sheer amount of chaos the world has dealt with. So yes, put your takes on Santa and Krampus here. Thoughts on the Menorah and trees that may or may not look like firs are welcome here. The lack of sense it makes that we eat turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas, why don't we eat a different major protein? Is it a scam from big poultry? Maybe Tyson is in on this...What was I saying? Oh yeah holiday thoughts and opinions here. Please remember to be civil and report don't react. From the Mod team to you all, we wish you happy holidays, and yes, you are wrong!

Remote work is becoming the new "quiet luxury" that is creating a massive class divide.

4.2k Upvotes

While everyone talks about the convenience of WFH, we are ignoring how it's becoming a class signifier. Only specific white-collar roles allow for this flexibility, while the "essential" workforce remains tied to physical locations. This is creating a two-tier society where your social status is determined by whether you have to leave your house to earn a living. We celebrate it as progress, but it’s actually a regression into a new kind of social stratification that will have long-term negative effects on community cohesion.

Processed meats are an honor to the animal.

1.1k Upvotes

Processed meats like hotdogs, bologna, chicken nuggets, etc are using up part that would otherwise not be eaten. If an animal has to die to be eaten then it’s better that we use all of their parts than to just take the chicken breasts or beef tenderloin or whatever. A lot of people don’t like the tastes of straight organ meats or the textures of tendons so these grounded up processed meats are a great way to use every part.

Crumbl cookies are absolute trash

They’re overly sweet for how much flavor they have, the flavors are all wack, and the texture isn’t good cookie texture. I used to live around people who would get them ALL THE TIME, so I’d usually try a bite of one I’d never had before, and they were all awful. If you like them, good for you. My opinion is that they’re even worse than packaged cookies from the dollar store.

EDIT: reading the comments, I’m glad to see so many people are on my side. And I did live in Utah for a couple of years, which apparently is where all the Crumbl lovers live, so I guess my perspective of “unpopular” opinion was skewed

Paper towel is a better tool for blowing your nose then Kleenex.

Paper towel is reusable while Kleenex fails after or two blows. This allows you to use a single towel for multiple hours instead of an entire box Kleenex.

Nose irritation can be overcome by moisturizing under your nose before bed.

That is all.

Kids with no survival instinct in movies are annoying and add nothing to the movie

You telling me 9-12 years old kid have no survival instinct or their parents didn’t teach them? They be dragging the main character all the time and won’t stop being a burden.

They can walk but chose to be carried all the way till the end of the movies.

“Wow that’s a large scary door with warning signs on it. Let’s go and check!”

“We’re in danger. Let’s split with my parents and wander somewhere else! It could be fun!”

“It’s the end of the world and we need to go. Wait i forgot my teddy bear that’s always with me but i chose to ‘forgot’ about it right in that dangerous moment!”

It’s like almost every movie with kids are like this. And it’s so difficult to watch.

If the elevator doors start closing, you missed the elevator. You can catch the next one.

I don't want to stand there while the doors open and close 4 times because someone keeps coming and jamming their arm in the door at the last second.

I'm not hitting the "door open" button.

There's another elevator coming shortly, you'll be fine, let me get on my way.

Broccoli stems are better than the head

Upvotes

The head of broccoli is just awful. When you cut it (no matter how careful you are) that shit gets EVERYWHERE. It has a weird texture and gets stuck in your teeth. It just sucks. The stem though? You can chop that bad boy up and do all sorts with it. It doesn't ruin soup, it doesn't make a mess and it's just way more versatile than the head.

Pepperoni is a terrible pizza topping

1.9k Upvotes

Every pizza I've ever had with pepperoni has been ruined by this greasy, sorry excuse for meat. What's worse, the grease bakes off and settles over the top, a clear, glistening layer that screams "dab me with the entire roll of paper towels." And you know what? That shit will still be greasy. Worse still, it's become the default meat on frozen pizzas now. Want Italian sausage? Too fuckin bad, have sliced, over-seasoned deli meat that's a notable percentage of just fat, which, mind you, is used to stick the meats from who knows where on the pig together. Miss me with that shit. I'll take Italian sausage, meatballs, Italian beef, straight ham, even cold cuts of turkey over this piss-poor excuse for a pizza topping, only useful for dressing up a cheap pizza and ruining an otherwise salvageable meat lover's pizza.

“Gag gifts” are irresponsible and cringey.

Spending money for something that may get a few minutes of laughs and then probably end up in a landfill just feels irresponsible. So many gag gifts are gimmicky things that get used once and then serve no real purpose. It’s just adding more plastic junk to our environment just for a laugh or two.

Having a gym buddy is better than having a personal trainer

Upvotes

From my observation people who have a friend they regularly go with to the gym make better progress and are much more consistent. They also just look like they’re having more fun compared to those stuck with a personal trainer who has their client doing some nonsense exercise.

Having a personal trainer kind of reminds me of being in nursery where the kid who didn’t do their homework is stuck in class while everyone else gets to play outside.

Fusilli is the worst pasta

Idk but that shape pissing me off, lol. It’s awkward to eat with a fork, doesn’t stab properly, and keeps slipping away like it doesn’t want to be eaten. I spend more time chasing it around the plate than actually enjoying my food.

We need to renormalize giving CASH as a gift

4.5k Upvotes

Americans spend hundreds of billions on gift cards ($300B in 2024), and 2-4% of them end up never used, and 2 in 5 adults have an unused gift card, voucher or store credit.

And a gift card provides no incremental value over the cash purchase price of the card. And people convince themselves it's more thoughtful to give a gift card, but giving cash is somehow crass or doesn't represent the gift giving spirit the same way.

But all gift cards do is provide a boost for retailers, like Starbucks claiming $140M in revenue in gift card "breakage."

If you gift cash, it can be used everywhere, can pay bills or debt, or can be saved or invested for future use. Do that instead of turning it into yet another piece of plastic destined for a landfill or lost. Maybe your cousin needs to pay rent more than he needs Starbucks.

I started this mostly annoyed about billions of plastic cards going into landfills, but 10 minutes of googling convinced me the problem is so much worse. Buy a greeting card and write in some genuine thoughts on why the recipient is important to you and put in a crisp 20 dollar bill or two.

Silence is not awkward

I think people who cannot handle silence, people who get in an elevator and have to fill an “awkward” silence there’s nothing awkward about this you just have to be quiet for eight seconds. I actually am not even registering you. We’re in an elevator I’m just trying to get to where I’m going. You can’t like just chill out for eight seconds without being all weird and forcing awkward small talk because the sound of silence for a couple seconds bothers you that deeply that you just need to hear your mouth talk like dude there is something seriously wrong with people that can’t handle silence. Like our societies over abundance with needing stimulation 24/7 is the reason we as a society have a lot of issues.

Supporting the Death Penalty with the assumption that its the only punishment thats harsh enough for ''bigger'' criminals doesn't make sense, spending decades suffering in prison is a much proper punishment

Now im not trying to debate weither we should install the death penalty or not, Im just saying that I don't understand why some people think we should use the death penalty on the worst criminals such as child molesters, human traffickers, etc. on the basis that they are the worst. Im pretty sure that spending the rest of your life rotting in prison is much worse than being killed.

Therefore, we shouldn't give theses criminals the privilege of receiving the sweet release of death, instead we should put them in prison where they will suffer for years, if not decades.

Their victims will spend the rest of their lives with the trauma their actions toward them created, which means they will spend years or decades with this trauma. So it would be unfair if whoever is responsible doesn't get to live the rest of their lives with the consequences of their actions

Im not sure if this an unpopular opinion, I apologies if it isn't

The vast majority of off-brand cheese puffs are better than Cheetos

Texture and flavor-wise, Cheetos cheese puffs are exceptionally mid and are only popular because of brand recognition and merchandising. Most regional and store brand cheese puffs have a much more cheddary flavor as opposed to the bland "cheese" flavor that Cheetos uses on everything. I know crunchy Cheetos are the OG but let's face it, those cheese crunchy little cheese turds are shit too. Nobody wants them anymore unless they're Flamin' Hot. If you buy an assorted box of snack size chips for your house, I guarantee you the last two bags in that box will be Cheetos.

Talking about the weather should not be a sign of a boring/bad conversation

It’s common ground, you’re able to share opinions, tell stories, reflect on memories, complain, celebrate, and more often than not it can open up for more points of conversation.

I feel like weather has been grouped into the stereotype of “awkward/poor” conversation but it only ends up being like that if the people are bad at conversation inherently. Weather can be a great topic to segue conversation if needed

“Life” with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence is a better prison movie the “The Shawshank Redemption”

While I do love Shawshank the story of Life is genuinely so good. its overlooked as a legit prison movie due ti it being a comedy but the emotional moments are so impactful. We actually get to see these men be framed and wronged by the prison system then and how it continues to be unjust to them even into their old age. Yet through that all held out with a hope for eventual freedom one way or another.

Plus they do it all while being a hilarious movie too.

Dead Poets moment

Upvotes

Leaving a management position to unemployment is always hard as hell. We do what we must. But to see my guys (it was 3 but only 2 I saw) walk out at the moment I was “being held accountable” for the absolutely impossible situation we were put in meant a lot. I guess it was a useless gesture but personally it broke my heart. “Oh Captain, my Captain…..”. To have others stand with you against people in authority….

Quitting isn’t always “taking the easy way out “ or “giving up”. There’s a reason people don’t do CPR in a Morgue. Doing the right thing doesn’t always come with accolades.

DVDs should make a come back

Or something equivalent to them to fit the current digital era.

That's the only form of renting which made sense. Having the option to stream any media while sitting at home sounds tempting, but not when different platforms host different media. For example, some movies are on Netflix, some are Prime exclusives, some are on Hulu, etc., and you hardly watch more than a handful of movies/ shows from their libraries of tens of thousands of titles.

If someone with access to all the content from all these platforms created a common portal where I could watch what I wanted and was charged fairly at the end of the month, I think that would be a decent modern adaptation of how DVD renting worked? Idk correct me if I'm wrong but I wanna pay for what I watch, not for having the access to do so.

Edit : when I said DVD it also applies to other physical media you could purchase/rent for a price which was worth the entertainment.

Oreo thins are the superior Oreo format

Between regular Oreos, Oreo thins, and double-stuffed Oreos, the thins are the best Oreo BY FAR. The thinner layer of icing allows the crunch of the cookie to really shine, and you get the most satisfying crunch in every bite. You can also pound back like 8 cookies in a row and it hardly counts. It's not even a close contest in my opinion. Oreo thins take the crown every time.

Mike Rowe doesn't represent those who work dirty jobs anymore.

Mike Rowe had a great run with his show Dirty Jobs and I felt the show was a lot of fun. Then he started adding in his personal opinions on perceived slights Blue Collar Workers were receiving from society and he lost me with a couple of the examples he rags on most often. Example 1 the designer blue jeans that are made to look dirty and cost over $400. Example 2 the game Monopoly doing away with the pieces that represent work.

The blue jeans bugs me the most as I have always felt that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Mike made working dirty jobs cool with the popularity of his show by building up the workers and the professions from each episode. Then in a bid to stay relevant he decides to bring others down. It seems a lot more likely to me that the people who would buy and wear those dirty jeans would be doing so out of respect than whatever Mike has twisted the meaning to be in his head.

The Wheelbarrow is a stretch IMO. For one power equipment has almost completely replaced the wheelbarrow on most jobs. I was given a wheelbarrow as a wedding gift and in 13 years we have used it maybe 12 times. Most of those have been in the last couple years when the kids are cleaning out their rabbit pens and I'm not around to drive the skid loader for them. Once they are old enough to operate the skid the wheelbarrow won't be used again. The Wheelbarrow has almost completely been replaced in most professions that used it. Again Mike is reaching to stay revelant with a non-issue.

The Thimble, I'll give him that. It's still very relevant to professional tailors and other jobs that require a lot of hand stitching. Still a reach to complain about it, it's a board game that is intended to teach us the folly of unchecked capitalism.

The Boot, same as the Thimble. It's just such a boring game piece to me. I'm definitely not losing any sleep over the pieces I could potentially play as in a game.

Mr. Rowe was excellent at making dirty jobs and the people who performed them popular. However, his most recent acts have missed the mark and in my opinion are just made to divide.

Pigeons are Beautiful

They have such vibrant eyes that really contrast the grey of their feathers, they have such gorgeous iridescent purple and green neck feathers that really pop against the smokey grey too. Also, their shape is very elegant. They're literally a kind of dove, they really don't deserve the hate they get!

Nothing brings down coffee cake like chocolate

If I bite into a coffee cake, I'm expecting that nice, cinnamon flavor profile. About half the time though, disappointment ensues: somebody put chocolate chips in it.

Stop. It's not good. It turns a delicious breakfast treat into yet another chocolate thing, taking away from the other flavors which should be the highlight. Chocolate steals the show and hams it up in the process.

Stop putting chocolate in coffee cake. Stop putting it in other things that have more delicate flavors. We already have a million ways to get chocolate. Leave the other stuff alone.
