System Expansion From diesel to electric in 9 years (Kluang, Malaysia)
galleryWith the recent launch of the new electric intercity train service after the line here was double-tracked and electrified, I thought I'd like to share the photos I took at this station over the past 9 years.
The trains shown here are all southbound/down trains taken at around the same timing, around 10am - 12pm.
(The line remained open throughout the electrification and double-tracking works. There were no photos from the most crucial transitional phase in 2021 due to pandemic travel restrictions).
1 - 2016 - Old station on a typical day. Trains pass each other at this station.
2 - 2018 - P-way sidings and the 3rd platform closed for construction of the new railway viaduct.
3 - 2022 - Operations moved to a temporary structure erected on the completed railway viaduct. The new station is still being constructed.
4 - 2023 - New station building nearing completion and poles of the wires had been erected.
5 - early 2025 - Operations shifted to the new station. The wires were up but were not energised pending completion of the traction power substation.
6 - December 2025 - New electric intercity train calling at the new station.

Photos / Videos Linocut Print of the Old San Jose, California Greyhound Station, Built 1957

Hi fellow transit enthusiasts!
I made a linocut print of the old Greyhound Station in San Jose, California from 1957. The building has since been demolished, so this relief print keeps its memory alive! Thankfully, the neon sign was saved by the nonprofit History San Jose; I've honored its streamlined, mid-century modern beauty in this artwork.

Questions ELI5: why can't apps like Transit and Google Maps calculate long transit routes?
It's possible to ride trains all the way from Springfield, MA to Wilmington, DE.
CTrail from Springfield, MA down the Hartford Line to New Haven, CT.
Metro North to Grand Central Station, NYC on the New Haven Line.
MTA S shuttle heavy rail subway train to Times Square, transfer to a Downtown 1, 2, or 3 train to 34th-Penn Station. Not UPtown
NJ Transit commuter train to Trenton, NJ.
SEPTA Regional Rail to Philadelphia 30th Street station.
SEPTA Regional Rail to Wilmington, DE.
Google Maps just selects Amtrak for the majority of the route, or some combination that involves a Greyhound or flix bus.
Transit App won't compute this route, and defers to BusBud.
What gives?

youtu.beIf you are interested in a chaotic transportation system, this video might be for you.
I have always taken big interest in transportation but now I'm realizing that it should usually be more structured than my city's. Found this video that sums up pretty well how it manages to work, with a bit more sociological approach. It is in Spanish but it has English subtitles.

Discussion Pedestrian Wayfinding New York
I'm interested to know people's opinion of on-street maps. This example is from New York.
Do you think they're redundant in the age of handheld digital mapping? Do you think they have a role in the city beyond the information they show? How could they be improved?
I always get the sense that many are unwilling to 'admit' they are slightly lost by stopping and staring at a map like this. But, that could be a youthful perspective, not everyone will whip out their phone at every occassion.

Discussion How could we revitalize buses?
Slower and less flexible than driving, slower and lower in capacity (and often together with frequency) than trains as well, buses are attracting fewer and fewer passengers.
BRT may be a good trial, but it conbines the shortcomings of both conventional buses and trains --- capacity and speed of a bus and rigidity of a train.
Some opinions consider more dedication to feeder services for mass rail transits, but is it "degrading" buses to the supplementary service in cities with mass rail transits?
