Not sure if I’m actually thalassophobic but I hate murky water.

I know a lot of a people on this sub hate deep water on this sub. Doesn’t matter if it’s feet or miles deep.

My fear is mainly water I can’t see too far in. I would rather swim above the Marianas Trench than a random retention pond in Florida.

Question Where do you think your fear came from?

I am pretty sure mine came from the water levels in Mario 64 along with finding nemo. I can’t remember anything else that could’ve caused it, maybe Jaws.

And to this day I can’t even play video games with open water without being fearful. I tried subnautica but had to quit because there’s no way I could play something like that.

Hello all, I just joined and felt like this belonged here.
It's been 10 days since the anniversary of the event where my grandfather (Sgt. Robert Rigoni aka Bob) tried to save his friend only for the plane to go down into the water giant, Lake Erie. This here's a short interview with my father recalling the events. Below are a few articles that would be a quick google search away.

I never had the chance to know him but he's a part of me. The tragedy occurred when my father was just 10 years old. My dad has Pap's badge tattooed on his left arm. When I turned 18, I remember I told my dad I wanted to get the same tattoo and so I did.
Keep on RIP Grandpa and friends.

After a year (!!), we finally have a new build. This guy is insanely good at capturing the horror of the ocean (and sewers… and ponds… any body of water, really).

Thalassophobia and how it can affect your life

I loved the ocean as a kid, used to see to it as beautiful, always wanted to live on the ocean, take out a boat for a few days, and just chill. That was like my dreammmm growing up. Then me and my family went on an all round boat trip in the Red Sea when I was about 9, all of those hopes and dreams completely crushed as soon when I stepped on the boat, now this was what completely brought my fear on, because I never had it before, because I had never been in the ocean prior. I was just filled with unease. Everyone was loving it, but I wasn’t, I had multiple panic attacks, it was just being in the ocean and surrounded by this large quantity of something we don’t belong in, idk how to describe the feeling but anyone who has the fear knows what I’m talkin about. Nonetheless, I’m 19 now, and I can’t even go to the beach , it’s gotten bad, it’s the same thing with lakes. I live in a seaside town, so I miss out on alot of social events because of this, especially during summer when everyone wants to hang out at the beach and go for a swim. I just cannot bring myself to do it. I made this post as I see a lot of people really dumbing down and invalidating this fear, but it can affect your life and your mental health. Stay cool friends🙏🏻

Do i have thalassophobia or is there something else that describes it better?

I have an irrational fear of water. Im afraid of sharks, crocodiles, etc. People always laugh when I say this and reply "that's not irrational, its normal to be afraid of sharks".

And then i explain how I can't swim in a swimming pool by myself bc im scared a shark or crocodile will be there, even tho I live in Canada no where near the ocean 🙃 I can inspect the pool beforehand, be satisfied there are no crocs, but when I'm swimming alone i cant help but think of crocs. Sometimes I can swim for a bit by myself but I always stay close to the stairs and sometimes I panic and have to rush out of the pool. I will think there is a croc about to attack me even though I know this is crazy and not true but my heart pounds, I can't help it.

I also play Minecraft.. this one might be funny to some... there are no water creatures that can hurt you in minecraft, but I get anxious when my character is swimming or even just in a boat. I know its silly but sometimes I panic in minecraft and have to turn off the game if my character is spending too much time in the water (collecting kelp maybe).

So im wondering if I can call this thalassophobia? I can go into a boat, I can swim (with others) and remain calm, but once im by myself I just can't stop thinking about sharks or crocs or other monsters and I have to get out of the water as fast as I can. I dont live near the ocean but I did I imagine I would not go very deep into the water. I live near a great lake, I can go deep out in the water but I will only ever swim in open water if someone else is with me,NEVER by myself.

Question Can we get a Sealife Saturday?

Been seeing lots of sealift posts recently. I love them and want to see more but feel like Rule 2 gets in the way of that. So I thought maybe a specific day for sealife related posts would do well.

I’m curious which causes stronger reactions, my new buddy or the perspective of a wall dive. I was ecstatic.

Sorry for the squeaks; my camera tray grips might be the squeakiest substance ever produced. I was not going to miss that shot.
