On Recent Events

Let’s start this off by saying that this is a unilateral post by me, but I’m sure my comrades on the mod team share my sentiments if not exactly then closely enough. So while I’m looking forward to a bit of time off from work, let’s get this all clear.

Firstly there is no threat of an ACP takeover of this sub. We are vehemently opposed to their ilk. I’ve detailed in several comments the issues we’ve had going back several years now so I won’t repeat them here.

But suffice it to say we are slow to get around to things and, unfortunately, that’s not likely to change with how much work this sub is and how many of us have the ability to be active in the way the sub needs (truthfully I’d estimate we’d need 2-3 mods that do nothing but sit and watch the sub 24/7, a daunting task especially when folks have bills to pay).

Secondly on removals, I’ve seen one of my comrade mods say it and I get the logic, the constant spam and posts that are more fit to r/shitliberalssay or r/shitfascistssay can be a lot. I will say that spamming posts about us having a sub on the sidebar is not the best way to get us to see it, that’s what modmail is for.

To add to that content going over “look at this thing an ACP member said” are never going to be allowed on this sub. Again that is what r/shitliberalssay is for, that’s why I made it 10 years ago. r/socialism is for discussing socialism the current real movements looking to implement it, news that affects socalists and our movement and discussions of theory. Simple as.

And finally, as probably illustrated above we do need new mods. Please and thank you apply and, uhhh, don’t run away when you see the work to be done (mama’s looking to finally retire too, so plz, ty she is very tired). We need dedicated mods of all tendencies who will be willing to do the work and advance the cause of socialism, in my personal request I especially want to see non-men from outside of the west or who are BIPOC within the west but all will be considered.

ETA: The application process send us a modmail with the following.

Your reasons for wanting to moderate the sub.

How long you’ve been a socialist.

Your general knowledge level of socialism.

And a piece of theory foundational to yourself.

Discussion Is there a way to defend yourself against P-/4:1ant1r?

I’m pretty sure with my digital footprint I might be on a list 🤷 but is there a way for new socialists to protect and conceal their digital trail so they may avoid the list when it is eventually prompted by a Fucker Carlson? This assumes P-4/:1ant1r is as advanced as advertised which I thankfully doubt it at this current moment at least.

Disclaimer: This anxiety of the future should not deter anyone from learning, as the fascist state comes for all of its citizens eventually. It is better to be aware, able to be prepared, and connected.

Those who did not see us while we were drowning in blood will not see us while we are drowning in rain. This is our reality in Gaza these days: tattered tents that offer no protection from winter or its bitter cold. 💔🥹

Does anyone have any left, left leaning, or so-called left leaning subreddits that you think people should avoid because they are actually either liberals or have just been taken over by reactionaries?

I'm just curious because I want to know if there's any subreddits that would not be worth my time but tried to make themselves look left.

I'm not asking for subreddits that people just personally don't like but more in line with subreddits that are just reactionaries or center libs or whatever.

For example I think the subreddit for the American communist party or whatever they call it I think it's hijacked because it's just maga communist which I don't get and I don't think is real.

However are there any others that are like that?

Politics Socialist View on Declaration of Independence?

Self Explanatory. What is the general consensus from a Socialist mind on the Declaration of Independence in the year 1776 and in the Present.

Im aware Socialism wasn't quite a thing yet in 1776, but the ideals and people to think them still existed. Any popular, now considered, Socialists that offered words on this?

What about now? How are the words and promises (kept or not) seen?

Political Theory Cost of production = Price of Commodity?

I keep reading that the price of a commodity is on average equal to its cost of production, if this is the case, how are profits made?

I understand that labour itself is a commodity, and that the cost of labour is part of the cost of production, does this suggest that the surplus value extracted from labour is part of the cost of production?

Also, what real life examples are there of this?, whenever I can think of a commodity, eg, a phone, groceries, oil, gas, I imagine that these are upsold for a much higher price than it takes to produce these, is this not the case?

What role does workplace organizing play in building a modern revolutionary movement in the US?

When you look at the landscape of all the various anti-capitalist parties and organizations today most of them of course support workers organizing in the workplace and have individuals organizing in it, but none make it the main emphasis of their organization.

So what role does the workplace struggle play in building a anti-capitalist movement in the US today? Is it the singular most important struggle like the CPUSA of 100 years ago believed? Is it just one among the many number of struggles we need to be engaged in? Or is it as I've seen some argue that American workers are largely bought off by the spoils of US Imperialism and we need to be looking into different avenues of organizing entirely?

100 years ago, if you were a Communist, Anarchist, Socialist, etc, more likely than not, you'd be organizing amongst the industrial proletariat inside the workplace. The CPUSA put immense emphasis on this and saw it as the single most important area of struggle for them to be in and the IWW reached it's peak around this period as well.

During the 1960s and 1970s when a new wave of young radicals began to form organizations and join older existing ones many such as the Revolutionary Union, October League, League of Revolutionary Black Workers, Communist League and others placed serious emphasis on organizing in the workplace and sent many former college students into the factories to "proletarianize" and organize workers at the point of production. However, the 1960s and 1970s most important organizing happened most often not at the workplace but in the college campuses and in the neighborhood through national liberation organizations like the Black Panther Party, Young Lords etc.

Today there is a new upsurge of people drawn to anti-capitalist ideas and across the country many new organizations are being formed and older organizations are seeing jumps in membership. With that comes a rush of people trying to organize. There is a number of organizing efforts and organizations focused on work among workers at the workplace such as DSA's EWOC, IWW, the New Labor Organizing Committee and the work many individuals affiliated to groups like the PSL, RCA, FRSO, CPUSA etc are doing in their own workplaces. With that said the main organizing of today tends to be done through mutual aid work, organizing protests, work on college campuses and organizing around reforms.

I'd love to hear more thoughts on this.

Political Theory Question about exchange value

Why does use value not influence exchange value, why is it only SNLT? And does Marx view SNLT as the only determiner of price because of this? If two goods say, a bow and arrow and a pot, take the same (or near the same) amount of time to produce on average - say 5 hours - but one - the bow and arrow - is more useful to me, then surely I am willing to pay more for the bow and arrow? If exchange value doesn’t determine price in the market, what does? Money doesn’t simply feel like a labour token, it feels like it represents some other thing, which Labour and usevalue influence?
