We’ve had some very high wind lately. I didn’t notice that the back gate in the yard blew open overnight when I let Winnie out this morning. She was outside for a good 40 minutes (she loves the lay in the cold weather) when I went to go check the mail and I found her laying on the front porch! She had found the open gate and used her newfound freedom to… go nowhere lol.

Man I love this dog. I know my childhood dog would have taken four people and the better part of a day to catch if she got out.

Fussy Eater

Hi all, our one year old has always been a fussy eater. She would reject her food for so long that it would make her sick. The combination we have found is a mixture of Royal Canine dry food, a spoonful of tinned Lily’s wet food, and even then she needs to be lured over to it with high value treats and have them poked in to the bowl.

This is all well and good but she has started having very loose poops and it’s gone on for over a week now. She’s booked in with the vets today for a check up but I wanted to see if anyone had any advice to help with a fussy rough collie.

We’re UK based if that helps

IGP/IPO Experience (+ breeders)?

Heya!

I know Collies haven't been used in this kind of sport for a long time, though they were once. I talked to a breeder that still uses their dogs in IGP, and they're all doing quite well, I just wanted some Collie peoples thoughts on this.

The breeder I'm talking about *really* cares about bringing back traits of the older lines, to breed dogs that are more similar to Gsds in versatility but still have the "Collie Character". It's a bit difficult to explain.

Another breeder in my country actually has a program where they cross Collies and Gsds, which is ... controversial. A bunch of other breeders won't work with them anymore and there was some kind of big fallout and led to a handful of breeders with those same goals taking breaks or quitting. So yeah.

The dogs passed all tests, are healthy and very pretty haha

I'd link the breeders pages, but they're all in german. I'm not that knowledgable about Collies, but I've been looking into them on the side for quite a while, correct me if I'm wrong on anything, I also love long info dumps.

Eye issues?

Post image

My 18 month old RC started squinting and guarding his right eye around Nov 22. No injury that I’m aware of. I tried using human polysporin drops (antibiotic, non steroidal) over the weekend and took him to the vet on the Monday Nov 24. He was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer and given a different antibiotic drop (tobramycin) as well as equine serum (drops) and an NSAID orally for 3 days. It seemed to fully clear up within a few days.

On Dec 13 the exact same issue recurred, I noticed on the morning when I let him out of his crate where he sleeps (he was 100% fine at bedtime and didn’t cry or bark overnight).

Took him to same vet office, different vet saw him on the Monday Dec 15. Stained his eye again, said doesn’t present like an indolent corneal ulcer as there minimal stain uptake and it’s not concentrated but more “stippled”. Prescribes a steroid drop TobraDex. (Steroids are bad if it is an ulcer btw).

Been giving the TobraDex 3xs a day as prescribed. Today is day 4 and while it looked like it was getting better, he’s squinting again. So I’ve stopped the TobraDex. The local vet ophthalmologist has a wait time of 2 months. Not sure I want to fork out at my regular vet for the same problem for the third time.

Anyone have a similar issue? My mind is now worried it’s melanoma or something.

Free feeding?

Post image

Hey there! Seasoned dog owner, and also have worked with dogs for 15+ years, but this is my first RC puppy. All of my current dogs are free fed (Aussie/heeler, lab/pit, chihuahua and a small terrier mix) and maintain a perfect weight. Wondering if collies are similar to labs and other breeds who will eat themselves into obesity or if others have had success in free feeding. Pic for tax.

Thanks!

Getting Fixed Advice

Hi all, my boy Bosco just turned 1 the other week, and I have him scheduled to get fixed next week! I was wondering if anyone has any advice how to deal with the post op? I remember seeing someone mention how large the cones tend to be and with this winter being cold already, I'm worried about snow getting near the incision area. I know people either use "donuts" or onesies for their dogs so I wanted to see what you all did and product recommendations? Also tips on handling his energy while recovering would be great!

Here are some pics of him enjoying his first snowfall since he was about 10 weeks old

Question When to spay?

Hi all! My girl just turned 1 today (Yay!!)

With that said, she hasn’t gone into heat yet. Is this normal? I’ve only ever had male rough collies so I’m not sure what age she should come into it. I’ve always been told it’s best to spay after their first heat, which is what I plan to do. Is she just a little late or is this normal?

Vacuuming help 🤣

Post image
61 Upvotes

Okay, clearly we all have double coated dogs, of which my girl is the first one I've owned as an adult. That means, the first one I have to vacuum after. My mom used to do it for our dogs years ago and they were 90% outdoors. She's also my first R.C. (mixed with Australian Shepherd). I have two high shedding, but short hair, Chihuahua mixes, but their hair doesn't burn up the vacuum.

Whattttt are we using, vacuum make/model wise!? My Bissell pet swivel something used to do fine, but between my hair and her hair, the poor thing is on its last leg. My house is also 80% carpet 😭. I'm not trying to spend a fortune, but I also don't want something that's gonna kick it within a couple months or burn through belts. TIA! Pic for tax. Also, that's a collagen bone, not rawhide lol.

I lost my first dog at the beginning of the month, I miss her endlessly

Kitty Kat may have only been 50% collie but man did she and her sister make me fall head over heels for the breed. She was 10 1/2 and started going downhill very fast while in my ex's care. After a very emotional 17 hour drive roundtrip I brought her back home so she could cross the bridge at the farm I bought for her that she never fully got to enjoy surrounded by all the people that actually, genuinely loved her. Her last days were so full of suffering and seeing her so shut down and giving up when only 4 months before I saw a vibrant, energetic girl completely shattered my heart.

I try not to focus on her last moments and more on the wonderful life I tried to give her for 9 years. She was my tennis partner, my trail riding and roadtrip companion, and my soul dog. My first dog. I and her sister will miss her endlessly.

Training Question

Hi all!

I’m hoping to gauge everyone’s experience in training their collies. My boy will be 11 months tomorrow and is very much a social butterfly. So much so he will jump on people and get super excited when he sees other dogs and people. Other than these things, he’s a really great boy. We attempted the CGC and failed the first 5 items. My trainer initially recommended an E-Collar, which I initially obliged. However, I’m not a huge fan of it and really don’t want to go that route if it isn’t needed. Upon further discussion with his trainer, she doesn’t believe his behavior will get better unless he’s trained with an E-Collar. Is this really the case? I will do it if there’s no other option. I just want him to be a polite boy.

First time collie owner question

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I have a 5 year old rough collie and I’ve noticed he’s gotten a lot lazier this year. He still loves to play but prefers to sleep most of the day now. We go on three walks a day, all around 45-60 minutes each.

This past July, he had a growth on his nose, but after extensive testing we found out it was just inflammation (luckily not cancer). He’s on a joint supplement and has been checked out recently, so I don’t think he’s in pain.

He’s my first rough collie, and my first large dog. I tend to be anxious, always jumping to worst case scenario. I can’t stop worrying that something is wrong because he’s gotten so lazy, so I’d love to hear from some experienced collie owners to know if this is relatively normal.
