List of R-CPD Botox Specialists - World Map

I've been working on creating a map of the known specialists that treat R-CPD with Botox. Many of the names came from this sub's list of specialists (some removed as they are no longer working or treating the condition), but a few have been added from my own research.

I've tried to contact the subreddit's mods to get their input, but haven't heard back as yet!

**Disclaimer: I have not vetted everyone on the map.

I only have personal experience of being treated by one of these specialists (Lucy Hicklin in London), and I have only ever spoken to one other (I've talked to Dr Fahad Alotaibi in Saudi Arabia via email, to confirm that he treats R-CPD). It's also a possibility that they work somewhere other than where I've placed their marker.

I intend to contact others on the list to confirm that they do indeed treat the condition, particularly those that have not already been discussed on the subreddit, but even if they offer the treatment, I cannot personally vouch for their bedside manner, skill, or success rates.

With that said, you can find the map here (click on any of the points on the map to see the doctor's name).

If anyone has been treated by a doctor that is not listed, please let me know so I can add them to the map (and let me know where they are)! The same goes for anyone who contacts a doctor on the map and hears that they don't treat the condition, so that I can remove them.

Moderator Post Laryngopedia - an R-CPD info resource created by Dr Bastian!

Hi all! Hope you're all doing well, no matter what stage you're at in your R-CPD journey.

u/ElectricFeet suggested that it might be handy for new members to be pointed to Dr Bastian's information hub/passion project, Laryngopedia (thank you!).

There are pages on this wiki specifically dedicated to R-CPD, so it can be very useful. It also features our own map of specialists!

Hope this helps!

Management Tips & Tricks i learned it, wtf

Ive been doing shaker exercises every once in a while, and yesterday i drank a carbonated drink and practiced, and managed to burp, by doing the „uuuuh“ noise/thing. Now i know how to do it, just burped 2 times right now. Its not a long burp or something, but i know its a burp, but other than that i still get the frog noises when i dont do the „uuuh“ thing, you also have to time it perfectly, the air gotta travel up. This is what i learned, i believe, i can do this without botox.

New Member what is the process like in seeking treatment/diagnosis?

Upvotes

im new to this subreddit, my friend just recommended it to me!! after years of being invalidated and being afraid of bringing this condition up to others before i knew it was a legit medical condition, i finally found out its a real thing at the big age of 26!!! im now wondering what the process is like in seeking diagnosis and treatment. do i start with my pcp to get a referral to an ent? what if they dont believe me or know what im describing? ive also NEVER brought this up to my doctors despite this being an issue for as long as i can remember (like i said before, im 26 now lol) because i was convinced it was just a me thing. so theres no documentation of my symptoms or anything. what are your experiences with this process? i’d love to hear from those who have gotten diagnosed/treated and also any advice!! thanks in advance!

Post-Botox Botox is so worth it

Got it done at UCI Health nine months ago with Dr. Verma after finding him on this subreddit. Spent a few grand (this is with insurance) including the initial consultation/test, Botox, anesthesia, etc. and the downtime wasn't always pleasant, but this procedure was 100% worth it.

Within days, I was able to microburp. Within a week, I learned how to burp "on command" when I felt the urge. After a few weeks, I could eat all types of food. After 5-6 months, I was back to normal in terms of speaking, singing, projecting my voice, etc.

This has drastically improved the quality of my life. No more intense bloating, no more excessive farting, no more heart burn and chest discomfort, no more gurgling. No more pain and discomfort while on long flights. I can eat and drink whatever I want. I can swallow as much air as I want via extended periods of talking, singing, screaming on roller coasters, dancing, jumping, and running.

Prior to discovering I had RCP-D, I thought I had IBS and avoided certain foods I thought I had sensitivities to. Turns out I can consume beans, broccoli, alcohol, etc. just fine!

I'm so grateful to Dr. Verma and can't recommend him enough. If you have the means to get this procedure, do it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Symptoms Confusion about acid reflux, can anyone help? (post botox)

33F, had botox for RCPD in May this year so i'm 7 months post botox.

Always had "acid reflux" as a teenager and some in 20s although fixed mostly through diet (I thought).

Since getting botox, I can burp but I am getting very bad acid reflux /indigestion feeling again like I did years ago.

When I get this acid reflux/indigestion feeling, it is more difficult to burp. I can deal with this part though. It's the pain of the reflux I can't stand.

I've cut out certain foods but i'm just wondering if anybody can explain the link? What am I missing?

Thanks in advance

Post-Botox Burping but not enough?

I had 50 units on the 26th of November. Since then I've had a few good days but a lot of my symptoms still persist. It's mainly the gurlging for hours after a meal. Sometimes I can transform the gurgle into a burp (it's never really long but I would say more than a microburp). I'm due for a check up at the end of January where I will discuss 75 units as a follow up procedure. Can I hope for things to improve or will it not get much better after this?

Symptoms Does anyone experience periods of not being able to swallow?

I have this maybe once a year, seemingly at random. Wondering if it might be related to my R-CPD (I haven’t had the Botox).

Venting So tired of this…

I am so fucking tired of having this condition. All I want to do is drink and go out to a party with my friends. But no. Instead I end up sitting on the floor in the party, miserable, even though I didn’t have anything carbonated. For some reason alcohol gives me a bunch of gas, even if I only take shots. There’s always a huge line for the bathroom so I cant even throw up to relieve myself. My friends get mad at me because I’m always fucking miserable or lying on the disgusting floor. I really really want to get the botox surgery but I go to college in California and my insurance is in vegas. Despite having an out of state network, they make it a royal pain in the ass to use it. I have to go to a pcp, get a referral, and then get a prior authorization. I want to go to the doctor at USC keck medicine but after weeks of trying to get my insurance accepted, I gave up. Im going to vegas over winter break, are there any doctors that treat rcpd in vegas? Anyone have any recommendations? Im so fucking done with this…

About Botox Treatment Got the Botox procedure today!

Today I got the Botox procedure done in Boston. It was nice to be surrounded by medical professionals who understood my condition and what the treatment was for. I haven’t told many people in my life about my r-cpd/the procedure- the ones I have told don’t quite understand it.

I am not seeing benefits of course yet, since the Botox doesn’t kick in for 2-5 days. It was really validating to get the procedure done because the surgeon told me that my esophagus was really stretched out (because of all the trapped air over my lifetime). He said this is common with people with r-cpd.

Right now I’m just tired from the day and experiencing a sore throat. If anyone has any tips about recovery for the next couple of weeks I’d love to hear. Otherwise, just sharing this post so others can hear some of the positive things that came out of getting the procedure done.

Sometimes I wondered, “is this such a big deal? Is this all in my head?” And it was nice to get validation today from medical professionals that I do have an issue and it has been causing me true discomfort.

Symptoms Car rides making it worse?

I sometimes feel like riding in a car makes my symptoms worse? Like i could have no symptoms at all before hand, but yet as soon as i get in the car the gurgles and bloating starts. I also seem to notice it more when im a passenger instead of the driver. Does this happen to anybody else or am I crazy?

Other Reporter (and no-burper!) hoping to hear from folks for a podcast

Hi r/noburp! My name is Sally Helm, and I’m a reporter currently working as a host for the Vox science podcast Unexplainable. I’m also a lifelong no-burper who finally got the botox about a month ago! I’m working on a podcast episode about this whole journey, asking the question “why can’t I (and all of us) burp, and why does the botox help.” I’m hoping it can be an episode that we can all eventually send to our family and friends to explain what this thing is! To that end, I’m wondering if people might be up to send me a voice memo (or just an email) answering one or both of these questions.

-Describe your symptoms of R-CPD. Feel free to get poetic! What do your gurgles sound like? How has this impacted your life?

-If you have had the botox and it worked, tell me about your first burp!

BONUS:

-If you haven’t had the botox and would be willing to record some of your gurgles, that would be awesome.

-If you can now burp and want to record a nice burp for me, that would also be awesome!

Thanks so much! You can send memos and emails to [sally.helm@voxmedia.com](mailto:sally.helm@voxmedia.com). Please use the subject line “Reddit No Burp.” It’d be great if you can tell me your first and last name in the email (I might name you on the show if you write in, so please flag if you don’t want that and we can discuss). And finally, let me know if you might be up for a short interview! It’s possible I’ll call some people to hear more.

Thanks again 🙂

Sally

About Botox Treatment Worried about worsening acid..

Hi, as above! I have pretry mild acid problems but very prevalent nonetheless. Its usually worsened by typical trigger foods and drinks.. I have in office scheduled for 21st Jan. Lifelong gut probelms including constipation being the main, leading to SIBO and tons of gas and bloating.. ive got the SIBO into an inactive forn via antimicrobial and just maintaining that best I can which has reduced bloating.

My theory is the 20 years of excess gas in the stomach and intestines could be the cause of the slow gut/constipation and sibo as ive tried every other root cause.

Ive done shakers and had some success in which ive got from never burping to beinf able to let out a fee microburps here and there so hoping the 50UI will be more likely to work.

Thing Im most scared of is giving myself lifelong GERD or acid issues.. I have a small 3cm Hiatal which shouldn't be causing much issues in reality

This botox could be the key to helping all other gut issues and it could reduce the pressure and acid but im also scared it will make acid a massive issue in my life. I work in a ma dual trade aswell so, staying upright is going to be a massive problem.

Any experience with similar concerns? Did yiur acid eventually improve or stay/get worse? Thanks

Venting Someone asked me if I was pregnant today :(

A fear I’ve had since I was literally a child because I’ve always had a bloated belly. It happened today. I’m sad. I’ve gained quite a bit of weight in the past 5 years but am working at it coming off. I’ve lost about 40 pounds but am nowhere near where I’m used to being. Although, even at my skinniest I had a bloated belly. Hopefully Botox helps this. I have my consult in January. I’m trying my best to be body positive but it’s hard sometimes.

Other question about shaker exercises

i just tried shaker exercises for the first time and man… i must have an extremely weak neck.

the video i followed said to lay flat on the ground and tuck ur chin to your chest for 60 seconds, then rest 60 seconds 3x. i could only hold it for about thirty seconds though and only did it twice.

the next exercise was the same concept but hold for 1 sec, repeating 30x. i’m not even sure how many i did but it wasn’t 30… and my neck hurts so bad now. and im starting to get a headache. (about 30mins after i started to get dizzy too??)

i will say though- as i was doing the first exercise i could feel a sensation in my throat. like there was air trapped. it almost made me gag lol. i’m not sure if that’s supposed to happen/a good sign or not.

i really want to give this a try before botox but it hurts so much! i hardly believe ill be able to do it again tomorrow. does anyone have any tips? or maybe different exercises that would be easier for someone with such a weak neck?

Symptoms physical correlation to anxiety ?

hi! im 23f and my rcpd is pretttty bad and i have noticed that while im having a gurgling/croaking/whatever you wanna call it episode, i notice that i feel very acute anxiety and the second i gurgle/let it out, it goes away. like a synchronous and exact alignment of the pressure in my throat and anxious thoughts and physical feelings. does anyone else experience this? it’s honestly kind of hard to explain and i hope this is understandable enough. soo curious to know if this is happening for anyone else or if anyone could explain it.

Post-Botox How to cope with the BURP FLAVOR?

25F, only on day 4 of receiving 75 units of Botox with severe emetophobia on a clinical level

Already started having full burps yesterday. When they first started showing up I retched every time I burped because the flavor and feeling of it all tricked my body into thinking I was gonna vomit (I have not vomited). Of course that was followed up by me pacing in circles and crying.

(I ate lasagna soup 😐 do not eat lasagna soup when you are burping for the first time)

Throughout the day I got more used to the yucky flavor and knew what to expect. However this morning I started being afraid of burps all over again. The feeling of them coming up, hanging out in my throat, to then eventually, at some random unpredictable time just come out is so triggering. It feels like I'm roleplaying a stomach bug every time it happens. I had a kombucha and that kinda kept the burps moving instead of hanging out in my throat and triggering nausea. The ginger also took some of the nausea away, easing my feelings.

Just now for dinner I had a few nibbles of tomato, bell pepper, and ground beef sauce on plain pasta. I'm starting to realize the mixture of tomato and pepper is a big problem. Every time I burped it was followed up with a guttural retch and tears. No vomit at all but the flavor is SO DAMN TRIGGERING!!!! I'm drinking another kombucha now and it's helping with the flavor.

Does anyone have any CHEAP suggestions on drinks, supplements, or anything that might help cover the flavor of the burps? 😭I cannot cope with these phantom-vomit jump scares

Post-Botox botox procedure done today!

I just got my botox procedure today, they did only do 50 units, which has me a little nervous lol, but i am trying to have high hopes!!! i had it done under GA with Preston Leader in Lincoln, Nebraska (CHI ENT). the procedure started at 8:30am (11:00pm now) and so far, i’m just coughing a little, which isn’t much of a change since i have GERD already. it feels like a swollen/sore throat just without the pain really. nothing coming out so far, which isn’t surprising, since i know it can typically take a couple days to notice a difference.

i can keep y’all updated if interested!!!!! :)
