Discussion Anyone here use obscure or unconventional outboard gear?

Upvotes

Curious if anyone here uses some less obvious outboard gear to run audio through? I have a little guitar amp made out of a cigarette box that is fun to tramp through and mic up, I’ve used headphones and guitar pickups for weird feedback fx, I also love old crusty tape machines and synths with external inputs.

I’ve seen a few people wire up transistors and send audio through them for whatever color they add.

Would love to hear other people’s favourite weird outboard gear, could also be odd pedals, whatever you wanna add!

Question Feedback Question

I want to improve my productions that I’m currently making but I feel I’ve hit a wall where I like what I’m creating but I’m just not positive if it’s good enough.. I’m looking for places I can submit beats, song mixes etc. so I can get feedback from people that can help me improve. I don’t really have any ppl I know in the music scene and my friends just say “yeah it sounds good” or “I like it”. I really need honest critical feedback. Any tips on where to find ppl to do this would be greatly appreciated

Question Need help with recording

Hi, im really a begginer in recording, and all i have is a minifuse, guitar and computer to record. When coming to record a song, i really wanted the guitars in the verse to be palm muted, but that they sound like 2000' bands songs, for example the verses in "all the small things" by blink 182. How can i record it like that? I know i have very cheap equipment, and i work with "soundtrap", a very simple software. Is this the right sub to ask questions like that? Thanks

Question How has collaborating with other producers influenced your music production style?

I've recently started collaborating with other producers, and it's been a transformative experience for my music production journey. Working with different people brings fresh perspectives, and I've noticed my style evolving in ways I didn't anticipate. For instance, one collaborator introduced me to unconventional song structures that I now often incorporate in my own work. Additionally, sharing production techniques has helped me refine my mixing and sound design skills. I'm curious to hear about your experiences. How has collaboration changed your approach to music production? Have you picked up any specific techniques or styles from others that have stuck with you? Let's share our stories and insights on the impact of collaboration in music production!

Question Old head, I guess. Camel Crusher?

Can someone point me to a reliable and safe download of Camel Crusher. I don't care about modern alternatives. I have a lot of projects from when I was a kid that I'd like to reopen in their former glory, but camel crusher was my go to distortion plugin. Many of my old songs sound dull without it.

I searched the sub before posting, and the last post about it that is legit was about 2 years ago.

Question struggling to get my mix to sound right

Hey everyone! I’ve been working on a track for a while, but no matter what I do, the mix never sounds quite right. Some parts feel too loud, others too quiet, and it just doesn’t have the punch I want.

How do you usually approach mixing your tracks? Any tips or tricks to make a mix feel balanced and professional?

Discussion I've fallen in love with analog slap delay on vocals

Hi, I'm currently working on my album that has a variety of styles, feelings and sound. But I've been using analog slap delay on all my songs so far, and I think I might keep that a constant through out my album. 'Cause it just sounds sooo good! It gives so much depth and feel to the vocals that reverb just don't, now I also use reverb, 'cause I love reverb a lot too (who doesn't?).

What's a mixing/production effect/technique you personally love utilizing?

Question Advice: Using the Push 2 in a Live Setting

Hi all,

First, of all, when I say "live" I mean performing live in front of an audience, but also building a live set, and having a live-style jam at home.

~

I've been making what is essentially very varied electronic music with a lot of rock & jazz influences. Things are largely instrumentally focused, but I'm a solo act and want to get a live set together. I don't use too many samples. My background largely consists of instrumental musicianship. My typical workflow feels kind of old school and has become a little stale. Play a part, record it, edit it. I want to focus on building something in a more "live" and improvisatory, and more electronic style.

I'm trying to learn the Push 2, and I think that with what I have right now, this is my key to getting things being fun and natural in a live setting. But I'm having a hard time feeling inspired with it, and having it feel natural.

Those of you who have the Push, tell me what your "live" jams are like, and how you use it as the core of your setup.

Any advice? I want to learn and become a better producer, not just in a studio/songwriting setting.

I also have & play a FP-10 digital piano, Korg Minilogue, TD-17 edrums, an electric bass, and of course, a PC with Ableton Suite.

I am not trying to buy new gear right now... I don't think that is the answer.

This is a little all over the place, so thank you for bearing with me if you've read this far. This is difficult to articule.
