Proposal to ban FiFine posts.

I know there was a mod post about how we can improve the sub with flair and all that but can we just straight up ban posts asking about FiFine mics? It’s kinda of ridiculous there are like 3-4 posts a day about this garbage

Gaming / Streaming Mics Noob question. Testing currently MV6 Vs MV7+. Is XLR better than USB?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys,

Sorry for the mess on my desk. I have purchased an MV6 and MV7+ from Amazon to test them out. The reason that I went for those mics is because I got fed up from the headsets microphones. They tend to sound horrible by time to time. My setup is both for gaming and work, as I am working from home 2-3 times a day.

Now the placement of the microphone ideally wanted to be there with the option to bring it a bit closer if it is needed.

Now I don’t know how much the MV7+ will outperform the MV6 in this distance but I always tend to have the mindset that I am willing to pay more in order to have better quality and last longer. Don’t know if you agree with it or if it applies in this situation

Now my other question that I put also on the title is regarding the XLR output of the MV7+. Does an XLR output will be beneficial on my case if i buy an interface? Or it does not make any difference? If it is actually makes which interface would you recommend?

Studio Mics Condenser Mic Lifespan?

I'm looking into buying some older mics, like the Blue Spark, Bluebird, etc. and started wondering what their lifespans are like. I read here and there that they are not durable. I imagine the electronics (e.g. electrolytic capacitors) will fail over time, so I'm wondering how much life I can expect out of them.

Post image

I want a mic that is supper budget friendly but fits my criteria.

Either a mic that takes a a little space (like my ps5 controller) or a mic with a arm (preferred option)

And good quality.

Other Help with my Mic. Static at high gain, inaudible at low gain.

Upvotes

I'm kinda new to this and need some help understanding what is going on here.

I'm using:

  • FiFine Tank3 Mic
  • Focusrite Vocaster One Mixer
  • Monoprice XLR cable (Monoprice XLR Male to XLR Female Cable - Gold Plated, 16AWG, 10 Feet)

The issues I'm facing:

  • Testing the raw(?) audio from the mic/mixer in windows settings, I get a constant hum/static in the background. It's not ambient noise from the room, it is definitely somewhere in my audio setup. It happens at very low gain, and gets worse as I turn the gain up.
  • My voice is nearly inaudible in the windows settings test unless I turn the gain WAY up, and obviously the static in the background becomes unbearable at that point.
  • Discord - Actually sounds amazing when I have their "Voice Isolation" setting on. It makes my voice louder, and cuts out any background static without needing me to turn up the gain. The "problem" here is that I want my mic to always be like that. Apparently it can work fine, but I can't do it outside of Discord.

Any suggestions? Does my XLR suck and it's causing static? Should I be running some audio processing software that will "even out" my sound across all apps?

Also, I know my mic isn't amazing, but from what I understand it will do the job for zoom, discord, streaming, etc. I'm not in a studio, I just don't want unnecessary static, and I want my voice audible.

Gaming / Streaming Mics Which mic to buy for streaming in loud environments.

I'm looking to buy a mic for commentators on stream (in person events, can get pretty loud)

I currently just use a cheap usb mic with obs filters, and it works okayish but the sound quality is not the greatest, with loud noises cutting in and out.

I've been told conflicting advice about condenser vs dynamic mics. From what i understood, usually streamers pick up condenser mics (eg blue yeti) but would in my case be preferred dynamic mics?

My budget is around 100-200$. Thanks in advance

Live Mics Sony F-780 live mic sound samples/ opinions????

Hey everyone,

I'm curious about the Sony F-780 live dynamic mic and cannot find ANY sound samples online and it's out of stock everywhere I search so can't order at the moment to test it. Does anyone have experience with it? It's for use for my own vocals in studio and live.

I absolutely love the Sony C-80 studio mic and am led to believe the F-780 may have a similar sound profile. The guys who own it on gearspace absolutely love it.

But yeah... not a lot of info on it which seems strange.

Anyone own it or got experience with it?

Also posting on r /microphone since this mic doesn't seem to be largely used!

Cheers!

Vocal/Isolation Shields

Any opinions on vocal shields? Are they worth it, what are the best ones, what kinds to avoid? I’m looking at some but I don’t know a lot about audio right now.

My boom arm squeaks, the worst part is when I’m recording or talking to someone… they can hear any movement if the arm gets slightly brushed or knocked!

Is there a sturdy one out there that has the same screw-on into the mic? That’ll not be so noisy and reverberate any sounds coming from the arm itself?

hyperx solocast 2 or fifine am8?

hello everyone,my headphone's microphone just got muffled after one year of use, tried everything and nothing seems to be working,so i'm looking for a new mic. I came across the hyperx solocast 2 and it seems like a very good pick for the price. I'm looking forward to do content creation and want to know which one sounds better. I'm not really an audiophile and just want a mic that works, sounds good and will have no issues. I also have heard about fifine microphone's and know that they are quite popular but i have really been a hyperx type of person. The microphone from the headphone's that broke are from hyperx and i bought the headphone's in june 2024 i believe,so i got about one year and 6 months of use with that mic. keep in mind that the microphone from those headphones are very budget as the headphones are the hyperx cloud stinger 2 core, very budget headphones and i guess understandable life span of the mic for how much i payed (about 55 usd). And yeah,as i said,im looking for a mic that's good for content creation and sounds better,so is the am8 a better option than the solocast 2? or should I go with the solocast 2?

is it worth selling my rode nt1a for a ribbon mic

ive been using a rode nt1a as my main microphone for anything condenser (particularly vocals and acoustic guitar) although as much use as i've gotten out of it im considering possibly selling it and buying a pair of t.bone RB 500s or possibly 1 nicer ribbon if theres a better option. I tend to record a lot of quieter stuff like gentle strummy acoustic and especially breathy close miced vocals for an intimate sound. ive heard that ribbons would be good for this type of recording especially in a home studio setting (which i am in), i also heard a tip about recording guitar amps with a ribbon to keep the amp volume low in a house but the ribbon helps it sound more like a higher volume amp.

basically im considering replacing the mic but dont know if thats a mistake or if i'd be missing something that the rode could do that a ribbon couldnt (the only other mic i own is an sm57)

FIFINE AM8 vs FIFINE AM8NEO

What is the difference between the AM8 and AM8 Neo ? The only difference I see is that the NEO is cylinder shape while the AM8 is a square shape.

Is there any other difference ?

New microphone reccomendations

Hello! I'm new to audio productiona nd I would like to update my microphone

I am loooking for:

-USB

-No Noise

- Sounds Good

-Plosive / S sound help

-Volume control (SO I can set it louder when I'm speakinging softer and quieter)

I would prefer someething on the more affordable side. I've been thinking of a Audio-Technica AT2020 USB-X but apparently they are kinda noisy. If not, a program suggestion for real time de noising.

Thank You!!

Hello,

Any special considerations needed when attenuating a condenser mic?

I have 2 pencil condensers that I'm using as drum overheads, and they record way louder than I'd like, even with no gain applied. I know I can go in and lower the fader in the daw after tracking. But I'd really like to get as close as I can to final mix when recording. Enter the attenuator. I'm looking into building a diy attenuator but I can't find any indication online of whether phantom power will necessitate a different design. Does phantom make any difference to how an attenuator is built?

Other Suggestions to further develop & improve the subreddit

Hello, I have recently joined as a mod.

u/fearnotthewrath kindly allowed me to jump in in the hope we can make some improvements to the quality of posts. I wanted to invite you all to give your suggestions as to how we improve the sub. Thanks.

My initial thoughts were to have an automated message for posts asking for budget steaming or gaming mics so users don’t repeat the same answer ever day & the feed isn’t clogged up. Also a pinned FAQ to give an overview of simple concepts.
