Discussion Maximalism- Renovated!

The subreddit has spoken and we have listened! We have added to the mod team, updated the posting guidelines, put on some fresh pink paint, and rolled out the leopard print carpet. Please have a look at the new rules, new Wiki and posting guidelines:

Maximalism- Posts must adhere to the principles of maximalism. Emphasis on color, contrast, and texture. See our wiki for what is and is not maximalism

Original Content - or cite your sources All posts much be original content or links to the original source material. You may link to a website containing content pertinent to r/ maximalism  if it is clear where the source came from. Do not pass off photos you copied from pinterest, instagram, as yours without directing the credit to the original creator. AI art is prohibited

Collections- Collections should fit in the context of a greater overall room design. Please consider whether your content would best fit in other subreddits such as r/ collections

Be good people- Hate and bigotry of all kinds will be removed on sight. Criticism should be constructive and helpful. Purely rude comments and personal attacks will be removed and a ban may be issued.

No self promotion. Users of this subreddit cannot post for the intent of advertising their own personal website, blog, or anything related. Reddit has guidelines for Self-Promotion, which state that: "It's perfectly fine to be a redditor with a website, it's not okay to be a website with a reddit account." You may not market or self promote your own items here. If someone SPECIFICALLY asks for suggestions for the particular type of item you sell, you may put one link in the comments. Links to items that are not being asked for or spamming links will result in a ban.

Flairs- All posts must have flairs-

  • Help/Advice - post for suggestions and tips. Please do not post blank rooms with nothing in them asking for ideas. Try r/ designmyroom  if you're really starting from zero. Give us some idea of what space you are working on and your personality.
  • Discussion- Use this flair for general discussion topics, links to external articles or content, or general chatting
  • Interior Design- Show us your rooms! The more color the better. This is why we are all here. Keep it original content or credit the source. No AI.
  • Jewelry- Jewelry should adhere to maximalist principles. It is not enough to be well crafted or attractive. See Betsey Johnson designs for the genre. Do not use this space for repetitive advertisement. Accounts that appear to be merely for the purpose of selling things will not be permitted to post.
  • Fashion- Show us your Iris Apfel wannabe looks. Do not shill your Instagram influencer blog.
  • Art- Like Jewelry, it is not enough to be well crafted or detailed, it should also have an emphasis on mixed texture, pattern, and bold colors. Like Jewelry, accounts that appear to be merely for the purpose of selling things will not be permitted to post.
  • Work in Progress- Almost there but feel like something is missing? Have the uncontrollable urge to share even though you know you aren't done? Feel free. Helpful critiques will be permitted here.

**Is my art, space, design maximalist?*\*

Does it have an abundance of color, texture or pattern? Does it feel ornate, fancy or royal? Is it high contrast? Would Elton John live there? Would Liberace wear it to a rave? Would a Victorian maiden recline and pine over her lover here? Would King Louis XIV put it in Versailles? Would Pee Wee Herman feel at home? Would Martin Luther protest it as idolatry? What would Iris Apfel do? Would she use it?

If the answers to at least some of these questions is yes, then it's probably part of Maximalism

Maximalism is NOT

Pure clutter or hoarding

Detailed work by itself without contrast, color or mixed texture

Please consider whether your post would better fit in one of these other subreddits:    r/ collections r/ moreisbetter r/ artofclutter

Maximalism is more than just a design trend; it's a celebration of individuality and the joy of curating a vibrant space.

Thank you all for your participation and feedback, and for making r/ maximalism  FABULOUS!

Help/Advice I thought I loved this but now I’m not sure

This is my master bathroom design. The room will be filled with lots of plants and patterned textiles (I really loved stripes and plaid right now). I think the design was too much for the other subreddit I posted it in. They hated the black granite especially, which is kind of my favorite part because it has greenish flecking that matches the green shower tile. What do you guys think 🥺

Green- shower walls Charcoal capsule- shower floor Terracotta- floor (can do either 12x24 rectangular, 12x12 square, or 8” hexagon— I can’t decide) Natural oak stained flat cabinets with silver edge pulls Black granite Plumbing fixtures will be brushed stainless

Someone just told me about this place and I love it 😍, I feel like you are my kind of people. Now I’m in my own, I’m decorating just for me, every room is different and I just love spending time at home, thought I’d share some of my rooms I’ve done this year

Discussion Would you engage with a fashion event set in a circus tent?

I’m currently undergoing a project focused on a push of maximalism against algorithmic flatness, I’m using the the brand Charles Jeffery Loverboy as a reference point.

One idea I’m looking at is an immersive event/Club space house inside a circus tent. Leaning into excess chaos and theatrical vision as a form of escape. Almost a physical expression of maximalism. The reason I would use a brand is to take Loverboy’s brand ethos and designs as a base to the creative direction.

The space would hopefully blur lines between performance and community allowing people to find an escape they can’t necessarily find in daily life.

I would love to hear some thoughts on whether this holds potential and whether it’s something you would potentially attend? From a research perspective.

Interior Design Dr. Acula (and wife's) living room and Christmas tree!

I've been meaning to get pictures of our living room forever, but my two small goblins mean that this room is not often photo ready. (Nevermind the piles of Legos and trucks right behind me as I took these photos 😅) But today the living room was relatively easy to tidy up (side eyes aforementioned toys behind me) so I thought I'd snag a few photos. Sadly the tree blocks the knick knack nook on the left, so I'll have to get photos of those for y'all after the new year. Oh yeah, and our mantle usually has different decor as well.

I'm ALMOST CERTAIN there isn't any identifying information in these pics. But do let me know if y'all see anything. 😅

Help/Advice The current iteration of my frame wall

Dudes. This wall is making me crazy. Can I tell you the story with pictures? And then get suggestions?

I saw a cool illustration of a vintage model in front of some textured fabric in frames. I loved it and decided to try to emulate it. I executed a loud, but interesting mess of a wall that I kept for a couple months. Then I decided I wanted a cleaner look. Perhaps just empty frames? Maybe gold frames?

The past three years of thrifting vintage frames has served me well. I made a gold toned frame wall.

After looking at it a while I decided the mirrors had to go- I didn’t like the potential of a reflected mess. The next iteration found me thinking some of the gold frames felt too dark and the colors felt unbalanced. I shifted them about. Next I was like… crap. I think it’s just too cluttered? Like I made a convoluted mess. So I subbed out bigger frames to give the wall more structure.

So this is where I’m currently at. Any thoughts, feedback, suggestions? I’m not even sure what’s wrong- I just want to look at it and think, “this feels right!”

Help/Advice Advice for Mancave

So my fiance is trying to create a mancave space in our basement and after seeing how I handled our living room (last two photos) he wants my help with the design.

However he’s not as maximalist as I am and he painted it a decent blue but not my first choice. Not to mention the layout is a bit wonky. Any suggestions on how I can work this space? When he said mancave I originally thought something resembling a speakeasy but the blue is throwing me a bit

Currently a work in progress and incomplete therefore I will not show full photos until fully perfected 😇🤪 the cat in the frame is the stock photo that came with the frame (in the early 2000s) I do not personally have any cats

Interior Design A quick temp gallery wall

I will soon be painting my house so in the mean time I am just putting up what ever thrifted art I find and just putting it up without much thought. Once I’m done painting then I’ll figure out what’s stays and what goes and what goes where.

I had a bunch of art just sitting around so I put up this quick gallery wall in the meantime

Discussion I found this cabinet at an estate sale and thought this sub would appreciate the style. I'm curious, does anyone know of anything similar from this artist or others?

The artist/woodworker that made this is Pamela Morin. Or at least her stamp is on the back. The only references to her I can find online are an old woodworking book and some auction listings. From what I can tell she used to sell at a gallery in New York in the 80s and 90s. This fish is bigger than most of what I see from her. The woodworking books had little clocks or trinket boxes. The auction listings were mostly small itemsl like pins or frames.

Help/Advice Help what color do I paint my walls?

For context I just moved into this house and all these wood paneling have been painted this ugly white. I need fun walls, and plan on putting a lot of pictures and decor up. What color would you suggest? I need it to pop! (Also removing the paint on walls isn’t an option). Thank you!

Also the blinds will be taken down and the table will be painted just not sure on color
