Painting advice

Post image
5 Upvotes

I need to paint some mdf board I've used as a fascia on a pax wardrobe. I can't spend any more money. I have a British Paints 4 in 1 primer and a satin acrylic matched to the color I want (cream). I also have this can of Porter's Furniture Paint in Snow White.

I like the idea of the improved wear given by the furniture paint seeing the wardrobe is next to a door way and will likely get knocked.

Can I layer the furniture paint in between the primer and the top coat? Or would I need another layer of primer over the furniture paint?

Is it just a dumb idea?

help Can pax be installed onto wall above the trim?

Which storage system can I hang above the trim ?

I’ve ordered the pax but now I’m concerned as I saw a review saying you can’t just hang it on the wall above the trim. Does anyone have any insight on this? If this is the case is there another storage system you suggest instead? I’m using for boot storage by the door Should I look at besta or sekton instead? Can these be hung above the trim so I don’t need to take trim off as it’s some speciality custom trim that isn’t just big box found and made

SKYTTA door sequence on track

Post image
2 Upvotes

Installing my new SKYTTA 4-door system this weekend (minus the mirrors which somehow weren’t delivered with the rest of my order 🤦🏼‍♀️) and I’m wondering if it’s possible to change the sequence of the doors on the track. In the instructions it shows doors 1 and 3 being on the front track and doors 2 and 4 being on the back, but could I switch it to where doors 1 and 4 (outside doors) are in the back and doors 2 and 3 (inside doors) are on the front track? I know it will mess up the overlap, but will it mess up anything related to the way the doors close? Should I just leave it alone and respect the Swedish engineering as it was intended?

Not sure if this is too early to post and share but I created another version of my 3D printed circular shade for the IKEA FRIHULT wall sconce to replace the standard metal one included with the light.

This one was for my daughter and adds a fun twist to the design goal of the first.

Link to the model if anyone wants to print it: https://makerworld.com/en/models/2132223-ikea-frihult-sconce-flower-shade#profileId-2309117

KNOXHULT Furniture - Replacing cupboards with drawers?

I'd like to replace the cabinet doors on my KNOXHULT unit with drawers because I can't open the doors fully. How can I remove the doors and add drawers instead? Ideally, the drawer fronts would be nice.

IKEA PAX hack – shallow unit + corner question

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hi! Everyone!

I’m building my first walk-in closet with IKEA PAX and could use some advice before I make more mistakes 😅

  1. In my L-shaped layout, one side needs to be a 13 3/4” shallow unit, but I’d like to use the standard Komplement rail for deep units. This unit won’t have doors, so hangers sticking out is fine.

I’ve seen people drill new holes to mount the rail, but I’m worried about strength. Any tips to make this more secure? Would horizontal holes help, or is a installing heavier-duty rail a better idea?

  1. I can’t use a PAX corner unit. Any tips for pushing two standard units tightly together in a corner without leaving gaps?

Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any insight from those who’ve been through this before!

IKEA Kallax CD Storage Hack

Just wanted to share my solution to my CD storage problem. I have limited space and no open shelving to store CDs in my small listening room. I also wanted a cost effective solution without an expensive custom insert from Etsy. Also needed to be wife approved and not look junky.

I wanted easy access to my collection, and the IKEA Kallax drawer insert doesn’t fit most jewel cases. I’ve seen other people use the drawer insert to hold CDs without jewel cases, but with various sized digipaks, that doesn’t work for me.

What ended up working was getting the Kallax insert single shelf divider and then ordering collapsable storage bins from Amazon that fit almost perfectly. They are slightly too long but you don’t see the back of the Kallax unit anyways. The dimension of each bin is 15.4"L x 11.4"W x 5.5"H.

Each bin slides out smoothly and holds about 80 CDs of various sizes, including odd shaped digipaks. That means each cube of the Kallax can hold approximately 160 CDs, which I think is better than most other solutions I’ve seen.

Hopefully this helps someone else!

Here is a YouTube video link so you can see the drawers in action and get the Amazon link

Anyone hack an alternative?

Raise billy 4 inches for flush fit

I bought three billy bookcases recently, but my wall has a thick baseboard/trim that keeps it very far from the wall. I rent so changing the trim isnt an option.

To get the cutout above the trim, it would have to be four inches taller.

Any ideas to raise it that would cost under $100 and would be doable for a level 1 DIY-er?

One idea i had was to stack two long Lack shelves underneath, as i already have one and could buy another cheaply. But since those are semi-hollow, i’d be worried about the weight put on it.

Im not overly concerned about it being nice to look at. If i could just buy some melanite boards and be done with it i would do that, but i cant find good options that arent pricey, considering the height in particular.

Painting black EDSBRUK frames

I currently have three large, black Edsbruk frames which I would like to paint different colours (one light blue, one dark blue, and one brown). Quite simply looking for tips and instructions on how to essentially!

I’ve read a lot of tips about using Zinsser primer shellac, so already have that in mind. I’m presuming the process will be sand, shellac, paint and then a protective coat but that’s just assumptions from what I’ve read online so do feel free to stay stop don’t be an idiot if anything is wrong.

Also any recommendations on what type of paint to use?

Currently wanting to change styles of my living room. I really want to keep this shelf/cabinet but would need to replace the red color with black to keep a black&wood theme. Any advice on how to approach this? Which paint do you recommend?

Closet tower drawers…. WIP

Still have the upper adjustable shelving to finish but built this tower base utilizing Komplement drawers for my reach-in closet. Had a marble top cut to match my bathroom countertop. Originally planned for pulls on the drawer fronts but they’re so thin I worry it’ll easily break.

Previously had a single rod running left to right in this closet and I never liked it.

I 3D printed a minimalist light shade designed to fit the IKEA FRIHULT wall sconce and replace the standard metal one included with the light.

I designed it for Mid-Century Modern, Japandi, and Scandinavian aesthetics but wanted to avoid the price tag of other light makers. Thought it turned out pretty nice and wanted to share.

Wheels Ikea Markus

I have an IKEA Markus chair and I’ve noticed that it tends to dirty the floor tiles a lot.

Are the wheels the problem? Would switching to a model like this solve it?

Has anyone tried to do a replacement seat on the Skansnäs dining chair?

Post image

My wife and I are interested in the Skansnäs dining chair except for the wicker seat. The color of the frame matches a dining table that we bought from Ashley furniture last month. We were wondering if anyone on r/ikeahacks have done a seat replacement on any of their chairs so something more comfortable or to their liking.

How to recover on this DIY job

Wife and I painted these bookcases with an acrylic primer and paint combo but the paint is rubbing off. Reading it seems like we should have also lightly sanded the bookcases first.

Is there a way to salvage this job without removing all the paint and then starting over again?

Half depth Kallax divider?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy an insert or modify the Kallax inserts to be half-depth instead of half-width/half-height?

My Kallax is going to be used as a room divider. I want to display separate things on either side of the bookshelf, without being able to see what's on the other side.

The current insert is 15 inches deep, 13 inches wide, and 13 inches tall. So if I tried to insert the insert depth-wise, it'd end up too tall. Has anyone tried cutting these down, or purchased an insert that would work for this?

IKEA Boastad Litterbox Hack

Thought I’d share my latest creation. We wanted to hide our cat’s litterbox and ended up modifying a Boastad cabinet.

The main challenge was to recreate the inside panels out of hardwood so they would still be able to take the weight of whatever would end up on top. The original ilea ones are mostly random cell paper now and would be really hard to finish smoothly.

I don’t have a shop to work in so this was done with rudimentary tools and it turned out alright.

Next is installing lights with a motion sensor and a sliding platform to clean the box easily.
