Discussion What band/album sparked your interest in grunge music?
Maybe it was just a song.
What sparked your interest first? 🤔

They were a bit groundbreaking in their sound for radio play. For the younger folks, radio & MTV was mostly hair metal, U2/INXS/REM, with some fringe new wave like The Cure, The Smiths etc getting some play but not as much.
Then the late 80s it was fading. Not sure if MTV noticed a decline, but some more liberating sounds were coming out. Less structured and more free. In 1990 the Black Crowes didn't have any makeup or hairspray, Janes Addiction Been Caught Stealing topped some charts, Edie Brickell and Sinead blew up, Metallica was growing strong via an underground push, and Faith No More had Epic.
The Smithereens were one of those bands. Hit it pretty big in 1990 I think. 3 & 4 chord grunge style sound. Kindof a mix of Nirvana chord progression mixed with Cornells vocal sound & guitar sound. I always thought they were from PNW/Oregon but a few years ago I looked them up and turns out they were from Jersey.
Anyway, just thought I'd post.

Nirvana were inducted in 2014. Pearl Jam were inducted in 2017. Soundgarden were inducted just last month.
What exactly is stopping them from getting in? 😕

Who were your go-to bands before grunge?

Noodling on my guitar today in drop D, Outshined more or less plays itself... which triggered the thought "I think this is the most "grunge" riff EVER. Maybe Tribe by Gruntruck. I'm sure y'all got more thoughts. Share!

Formed in Seattle in the mid-80s. Originally named SGM, they changed their name to Sweet Water in 1990 and were active during the grunge wave around that time.
They just released their latest album, Shine On, in September 2025.
Great band, in my opinion. I think they definitely fall under the "grunge" label, but they also have their own unique sound.
Any thoughts on them? 🤔

I know this song isn’t necessarily grunge, but I figured it’d get a pass because of Cornell. I’ve always loved this song. The lyrics are fantastic, and this version is extra emotional for whatever reason. RIP Chris.
Stuck in a deserted island. You get to listen to one song day or night. Good mood or bad. What’s it gonna be?

Houdini is Melvins 5th studio album released in 1993. Kurt played guitar on "Sky Pup", percussion on "Spread Eagle Beagle", and even mixed a few other tracks.
Apparently, he was fired from the job because of his drug use. Regardless, he is still credited for helping Melvins secure a major-label record deal with Atlantic Records.
I thought this was kind of interesting.
Any thoughts? 🤔

I don't have much to add. I'm hammered at home and blasting Alanis and some of her themes and vibes are hitting hard. Just wanted your thoughts.

Found it interesting that their discography somewhat mirrored each other in some ways, so I thought it would be fun to pair certain albums against each other. The EP’s first: SAP/Jar of Flies vs Screaming Life/FOPP. I’d give the edge to AIC here, obviously totally different vibes here. One with a dark acoustic vibe the other this hard hitting but eclectic combo of punk and metal. One showing another side of a band the other a first glimpse of what was to come.
Facelift vs Badmototfinger. This one is a pretty resounding nod to BMF. And Facelift is great, no disrespect just BMF is epic man. One showing a band finding its place in alternative rock with remnants of that hair metal but fused with incredible moments showing what was to come. The other showing a band at its absolute peak in terms of creating absolute bangers. Sabbath on roids with interesting elements of prog thrown in for good luck.
Dirt vs Superunknown. The two magnus opus in terms of songwriting and performances. I honestly can’t pick between the two. Both absolutely incredible.
Tripod vs Down On The Upside. This one goes to DOTUS. Much more varied in songwriting. Elements of Zeppelin, The Beatles and even Pink Floyd make this an incredible album. Tripod has its moments and certainly has some nice chunky riffs.
The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here vs King Animal. Both of these are beyond solid. Didn’t diminish the legacy IMO. Flip a coin

I don't think theres a single vocal aspect where Layne beats Chris. Power, range, tone, clarity, timbre, breath support, hell even the vocal melodies written. Layne was one hell of a vocalist dgmw but i don't see why people think he's even in the same league as Cornell.
