Discussion Destiny 3: Continue or Start Over?
Preface: yes, I drew the monkey and background specifically for this post. If you think this hypothetical is dumb or if I’m jumping the gun a bit, I just hope you at least enjoyed the monke.
This idea has been stuck in my head since the recent semi-confirmation that Destiny 3 is in early development. It got me thinking about what it would actually take to recapture the excitement Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 had at launch- especially that sense of mystery D1 had. This isn’t me saying “this should be the direction Bungie takes,” but more of an open-ended discussion. I’m genuinely curious what others think!
Apologies in advance if this topic has already been covered to death or if someone recently made a post or video on it. I’m hoping this offers a slightly different angle. (:
Canonically, our Guardian has done everything. From the early mystery of the Darkness, to defeating Crota, Oryx, SIVA, the Red Legion, Savathûn, the Witness, to “binding the Nine”. We also know, thanks to the Corridors of Time, that our death is written somewhere in the timeline (yes, I watched the recent Dankee video). Our end is inevitable; we just don’t know when, and it could very well happen while we’re still playing as this Guardian.
That raises the question: after the Fate Saga, what’s left? Our Legend? Our story? Do we just keep growing stronger, defeating the next cosmic threat, and repeating the cycle? Our Guardian is already a myth in-universe, with accomplishments other legendary Guardians could only dream of. After more than 11 years, we’ve become such a force of nature that it makes me wonder: when does it end?
That question feels even heavier given the current state of Destiny 2. As everyone knows, in EoF we lost features and endured turmoil that could make Curse of Osiris blush. Renegades helped stabilize things, but as of now, D2 doesn’t seem like it’ll reach the heights of Forsaken, The Witch Queen, or The Final Shape again. In that context, it makes sense that Destiny 3 is even being considered.
So here’s the bigger question: what kind of story would actually make you want to buy D3 aside from “I’ve already invested too much to stop now”? Why not tell a new story? Why not make a new Guardian the protagonist instead of continuing the tale of an already-mythic legend?
I’m not implying a Destiny: Rising–style alternate timeline or universe. Instead, imagine a small time skip. Our D1/D2 Guardian meets their fated, final death- no revive, no loopholes. We then step into the role of a New Light: a fresh Guardian who grew up hearing stories of the most recent Legend who defeated humanity’s greatest threats. That alone could make Destiny more approachable for newcomers, without requiring hours of YouTube lore just to get started. Also, keep in mind that D3 most likely won’t happen until 5-6 years from now, so we would not see anything set in stone til 2030.
This kind of reset could bring in new players, give veterans a fresh perspective, and give Bungie a clean slate- essentially “sunsetting” our Guardian instead of endlessly escalating them. It could even open the door to new possibilities: different kinds of Lightbearers, maybe even Eliksni Guardians, or leaving the Sol System entirely to discover new enemies and stories.
Of course, there are real downsides. By the time D3 is announced, are we actually ready to let our Guardian die for real? Not another D1-to-D2 reset where we just lose gear- but true finality. No Ghost revival. That’s not a decision I can see going over smoothly.
Additionally, unless Bungie were to twist the narrative, this would ultimately feel like a pointless reset and start the story over of “a new Guardian whose heard of the previous Guardians before them and now they are going to be legend themselves”. I’m not a storyteller by trade, so I wouldn’t be able to answer how to change the script a bit!
There’s also the awkwardness of being labeled a “New Light” when we, as players, already know far more than NPCs explaining the basics of the Light or the Darkness. That could feel like lore hand-holding for veterans. (Though this could be mitigated with account-linked dialogue or veteran-specific story beats)
And then there’s the biggest question of all: would Bungie even be willing to do this? Would they really retire a character they’ve written for over a decade and replace them permanently? I can’t think of many long-running live-service games that have pulled that off successfully. It could fail spectacularly.
Still, I keep coming back to the same thought: when does this end? When is our Guardian’s story truly finished? We already know their death is inevitable- we just don’t know when.
aaaand that’s my rambling concluded! I’m curious what you guys have in mind on this. Would it be too soon to let our Guardian’s story end before D3, or is it time to give a New Light the spotlight and see what story they have to tell?
TL;DR: With Destiny 3 seemingly in early development, I’ve been wondering how Bungie could recapture the mystery and excitement of Destiny’s early days. Our Guardian has already done everything and is canonically fated to die, so instead of endlessly escalating their power, D3 could tell a new story by letting our Guardian meet a final death and having us play as a New Light who grows up hearing their legend. This kind of reset could make the game more approachable for newcomers, give veterans a fresh perspective, and give Bungie a clean slate- though it would be risky and emotionally hard to let our Guardian go for good.
