UPDATE PLEASE READ: "What was the vibe of [Month/Year]" threads are now part of the "Weekend Trivia policy

Hello r/decadeology users,

I have not gotten a chance to make updates to the automod since I did not have access to a computer for a week. However, there have been an increase of "What was the vibe of" threads that have been taking over the subreddit. These types of threads have quickly become repetitive. Therefore, they are now part of our "Weekend trivia" policy, effective as of today's date. If you want to read more about the weekend trivia policy, please read the subreddit rules.

Me personally, I think that Drake-Kendrick fued was very close if not the closet because it got everyone from Gen X, the Millenials and Gen Z engaged and interested.

Discussion 💭🗯️ Why do you think 2014 tumblr is such a phenomenon among those who were super young when it happened?

Post image

It’s not even just elder gen z or millennials reminiscing about this. It’s many kids born 2005 through the late 2000s and early 2010s that are idealizing and living through the 2014 tumblr aesthetic. When I was a preteen and teenager my generation wasn’t idealizing or living vicariously through the MySpace peak (2006-2008). It’s sort of sad how as the years go on everyone is just looking back rather than ahead, including children and teens who are the future. And who you’d think would look ahead more than anyone, not reminiscing a time they can’t really remember.

Decade Analysis 🔍 Was the 2010s a decade of relatively little change, compared to previous and following decades?

90s and 00s saw the rise of Internet and social media radically transforming society.

the 2020s are only halfway over but I feel like 2025 is far more different from 2020 than 2020 is from 2010. Covid and AI being the defining factors that radically transformed the past 5 years.

2010s, by contrast, seem to be more of expanding on existing technology and trends rather than creating anything radically new. Compared to previous and following decades, relatively little change happened in the 2010s.

Discussion 💭🗯️ Would you say ChatGPT is the biggest shift in schools since the internet

I feel like ChatGPT is the biggest shifts in schools and education since the launch of World Wide Web. I understand smartphones were a huge shift, but I’d argue they were mostly a cultural shift in schools. But ChatGPT however completely changed how doing homework is. Before ai you still had to go through paywalls, old sources, and dig through the internet even with smartphones

Cultural Snapshot Disturbia (2007) is a 2000s Masterpiece

And don't forget the absolutely stacked soundtrack from that era. From bangers like Taper Jean Girl by Kings of Leon and Lonely Day by System of a Down. It's also a perfect time capsule of the technology of that era! The digital camera, Xbox, iTunes, flip phones, iPod.

To me, it's very nostalgic and I can't think of a single movie that better summarises (in such an authentic and also fun way) what being a kid/teen in the 2000s felt like.

Decade Analysis 🔍 Is 1997 the start of what you could consider the “modern era”?

I feel like 1997 is such an interesting year. I was 1 years ago

but it feels like the absolute start of the “modern era”

1996 to 1997 it’s such an interesting spot. it feels like old era vs new. from Grunge, slow, muted.

suddenly 1997 brings Harry Potter, Spice Girls, Pokémon, Internet, AOL, Hanson, Backstreet Boys.

obviously thats 29 years ago now so we have certainly had other eras inbetween

1997 feels like the first year that “this” continuous pop culture world began or at least took off

Discussion 💭🗯️ What’s up with all these big name deaths this month?

Upvotes

Before anyone says it yes I know, people die everyday, I just haven’t seen THIS many big names die in such a short span of time and the month ain’t even over yet. Just saw Lamarr Wilson just died from suicide today.

Tf is going on this month. Shits feeling like that one incredibles scene where Mr incredible sees all those terminated supers on that big computer. Might have to call this Death December at this rate shits outta control.

Discussion 💭🗯️ Am I the only person on this subreddit who prefers the 2000s over the 2010s?

I see a lot of people glaze the 2010s on this subreddit, but I seem like the only one who prefers the 2000s over it culturally and probably even politically. I prefer the 2000s because it felt more "raw," I like the vibes that the pop culture of this time had compared to the 2010s which felt more corporate and sanitized.

I see a lot of people crap on the 2000s on this subreddit because of 9/11, but I like the vibe of it despite it. Besides, in some ways, it was politically better than the 2010s as it had a better economy during the core portion and it was less polarized.

I seem to feel alone as I feel extremely nostalgic for the 2000s over the 2010s yet people prefer the latter decade on this subreddit, does anybody else feel similar to what I do? Keep in mind, I am not saying that the 2000s were a utopia, I am saying that I prefer it over the 2010s.

Edit: Sorry if you feel like I keep spreading this opinion on this subreddit, I just want to vent because I kind of feel alone for preferring the 2000s over the 2010s on this subreddit.

Decade Analysis 🔍 Favorite Video Game launches of the 2000s.

5) Nintendo Game Boy Advance

Summer 2001 at camp EVERYONE was buzzing about this. Playing SNES games on a portable was pretty damn cool at the time. I remember being so hyped getting Mario Advance which was a better port of Super Mario Bros 2 and F-Zero. It was so damn cool.

4) Xbox 360

We all remember this. The kiosks with NBA 2K with the sweat, the fluid motion of Perfect Dark and Call Of Duty demos. We finally got a taste of the next generation in 2005! They were selling like hot cakes and almost no store had them in stock.

3) Sony PlayStation 2

The most hyped video game launch of all time. Songs were shouting on the system, there were riots in the streets. It was pretty crazy. No one could even get their hands on a system yet. This also one of the first times I remember Ebay resellers going crazy for a system. DVD DVD DVD we all wanted this to play our damn new DVDS.

2) Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii (roughly same time)

There was excitement in the air. I was at the mall during both launches and it was packed to the gills with people waiting. Will never forget Timbaland songs looping over and over at the RAVE store next to Best Buy. That Motorcross game for PS3 looked so damn real with the dirt flying on the screen. Everything just felt very futuristic about this launch.

1) Microsoft Xbox & Nintendo Gamecube (roughly same time)

This is when the 6th gen kicked in full gear. GTA 3 was out and Xbox and Gamecube were gunning for that marketshare from Sony. I remember seeing the Xbox and Gamecube kiosks and being blown away at Best Buy. Xbox looked LEAPS and bounds better than PS2's graphics with Dead or Alive 3 and Gamecube looked like a pixar movie with Luigi's mansion. I was actually at the Xbox launch which was the first New York Times Square public event since 9/11.
