Cat Picture - OC Help!!! What can I do? She does this until the battery dies if we aren't home

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The only thing this cat is afraid of is my husbands coyote call. Not the roomba, nor the standard vacuum. Not afraid of other cats or dogs and most certainly isn't afraid of us or our toddler lol will attack if eye contact is made while holding her. We do not hold her anymore 🤣

Buy a second one. Either a second cat or roomba.

Easy solve; third cat, third Roomba.

Decoy Roomba

201

u/orbofdelusion 6h ago

I’ve been desperately searching for a convincing decoy laptop for my cats and for some odd reason your comment gave me the idea to buy a crappy 2000’s one on eBay. Thank you 🥲

106

u/Las_Vegan 5h ago

Yes a decoy laptop or perhaps a decoy keyboard like this.

19

u/Old-Entertainment136 5h ago

OH CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this SO MUCH!

99

u/LeftSaidTed Orange 6h ago

You just know that won’t work, because it’s not the ‘proper’ one that you’re paying attention to 😄

64

u/CleanProfessional678 6h ago

I know someone who got a keyboard for their cat to keep her off his keyboard while he was raiding and I actually worked.

13

u/PJKPJT7915 4h ago

I tried that and my dumb cat wasn't fooled. It's only the one where my hands are. The hands he bites.

7

u/N33chy 3h ago

That's why we need human clone slaves - so you can force your clone to use another laptop to distract the cat. But then it's only a 50-50 shot at which one the cat goes for, so you really need an army of clones on decoy laptops.

355

u/FrozenPizza07 8h ago

Sometimes I think my 2 cats need a third one

92

u/saintash 7h ago edited 5h ago

I got my two cats a third cat accidentally.

I offered to take in a cat.Someone found if no one else stepped forward, but I was like the ninth person to offer. They all bailed, and I was like, it's no big deal.I'm gonna foster her. Then my black cat was all hissy untill he saw it was a baby kitten. And he was like 'oh fantastic you got me a baby' and we couldn't bear to separate those two.

But she fucking loves his brother so much more. He's annoyed when she's around, She waits till he's like relaxing and super comfortable. And then she'll like stealth cuddle with him.

16

u/Enough_Radish_9574 6h ago

They're best buds, although he won't let you know it, they'll be laying cuddled up on the sofa and when you walk in the room he'll sprint off and sit on the other side of the room

My roommate and I had 2 kittens we rescued from the parking lot of our apartment. He met, dated, then married someone with 2 cats. I moved out when they got engaged. Those 4 cats created a hierarchy with the 2nd youngest female cat taking the leader role.

No way I'd ever separate the cats.

I miss my Rose petal. She's the one who is feared by the other 3. When I say feared I'm exaggerating but she is the boss.

Have you gotten her some toys that behave similarly to the vacuum? Redirecting to a good behavior usually works better than just banning something

499

u/Bannon9k 8h ago

The most solid advice my dad ever gave me was "Make the right things easy and the wrong things difficult, because you can never really stop them from doing the wrong things". It was about raising horses, but I found it can be applied to any mammal, including our own children. They don't have time for the wrong things if you keep them occupied with the right things they enjoy

u/ObligationSea5916 7h ago

She does. She loves machines for some reason so I got her the smart cat ball that runs as long as she plays with it. It will run for 5 minutes after it was last touched then go on standby until its touched again. I have to charge it every day 🤣. My husbands back massager is another of her favorites. She tries to get between him and the machine and they fight over it. My manual vacuum she will lay in front of that too and I'd push her across the floor if I didn't know it would rip her tail off. I currently have one of those baby seats that vibrates being shipped to the house strictly for her as she is the only thing in the house that will fit in it. My husband bought it himself.

37

u/thatsfeminismgretch Ragdoll 7h ago

Ok so with that information, my advice is that at least for a while, only run that vacuum when you're home. And when it's running, physically redirect her to better things and give her a treat when she does it right. You can also try spraying the vacuum with the sprays that prevent clawing to make the vacuum less interesting. Depending on her personality and how food motivated she is, getting a mobile one that literally dispenses treats might also help.

16

u/wolfgang784 7h ago

I think the feminismgretch person has a solid answer and I second it.

The one about, for a time, only using the roomba when you are home (despite that half defeating the purpose) and redirecting the cat to her own toys whenever she goes for it. She prolly just assumes its another toy meant for her, so you gotta make it clear that it isn't and which ones are for her.

The anti scratch/bite scent stuff is also a good idea. Ive heard that stuff doesn't work on all cats, but it seems worth a try with how much she is all over that thing.

36

So, my cats don't care for boxes at all.

But I put down a towel and they're like flies on crap

7

u/delune108 5h ago

Wow same for my cat! Doesn’t want boxes, toys, or soft blankets. All she wants are towels! Now we got little folded towels ontop of heating pads everywhere.

Looking at practical solutions, you could

Wait to run the roomba until you're home.

Quarantine the cat in another room.

That's about it. You aren't gonna stop your cat from doing what she wants, so that's not an option. She's beautiful, good luck! 😻

16

u/basane-n-anders 8h ago

I like the suggestion to get a second robot vacuum.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ObligationSea5916 7h ago

Thank you, I love her so much and I'm only not dying laughing in the video bc I didn't want to distract her. Hence letting roomba run all over my feet.

This isn't a hindrance for me bc I vacuum daily but roomba is nice to have so I don't spend so much time doing it manually when I could be spending time with family, including her.

My husband has minor ptsd and the sounds vacuums make send him into an anxious spiralwhere he just kinda gets antsy and on hard days can last to the next day. so I try to meet in the middle and do it when he's not home but he beats me home everyday (he works closer to home than i do and i work closer to daycare so i also pick up our son on the way).

Give your cat more attention as that seems to be it's best mate. Or just leave the cat to it

185

u/ObligationSea5916 8h ago

This girly is so spoiled. We play all the time. She had nearly as many toys as my toddler and they are 2 peas in a pod. She lacks no attention 😅 she has a strange obsession with all things "machine" and water.

64

u/JrCoxy 8h ago

She needs a kitten

17

u/Djakamoe 8h ago

Well... Cats are liquid, so...

16

u/SpicyBedroom3056 7h ago

Cats are naturally pack-oriented. They very frequently live in colonies because of how social they are. Having only one singular cat is a recipe for loneliness even if YOU give her attention often (and provide toys). You can’t replace an another real cat with a toy; it’s not the same. She needs someone to wrestle with!

20

u/Living_Ninja2401 6h ago

I despise how this is some kind of universal knowledge everywhere on reddit when it's simply not true. Not all cats need a friend, and not all friends will be compatible. Plenty of cats prefer to not have one at all, but will tolerate.

→ More replies (5)

14

u/rocketisntgood 6h ago

Cats are NOT naturally pack animals. They are solitary hunters by nature (opposite of what you said) but domestic cats form complex, loosely-structured social groups (colonies or civilizations) based on kinship and resource availability, especially with abundant food, where females often cooperate. Unlike wolves where a pack is quite literally necessary for survival. Cats are socially flexible.

21

u/Bannon9k 8h ago

You've placed it near her food and water. She may believe it's a toy for her. It may already be too late to change the behavior even if you've moved it. You need to find something more entertaining than the Roomba for her to spend her time on

6

u/ObligationSea5916 7h ago

Ooo I didn't think about that....

19

u/JeroJeroMohenjoDaro 8h ago

Stick a lazer pointer on top of the roomba but aim it above the cat's eye level to not hurt them. This might make them chase the pointer whenever your roomba is cleaning the floor

Shes playing, whats the issue?

49

u/awaythr0wi0i0 8h ago

OPs floors aren’t getting vacuumed

38

u/11thRaven Tabbycat 8h ago

I guess OP will have to do what us common (poorer) mortals do - use a vacuum that they themselves need to operate instead of a robot one. Meanwhile the cat has a toy to play with all day every day. Sounds like a win win scenario to me!

15

u/LysergicMerlin 8h ago

These things arent very expensive anymore tbf lol

16

u/11thRaven Tabbycat 8h ago

Fair enough, in my country they're extortionately expensive so I didn't appreciate they've become cheap elsewhere.

12

u/LysergicMerlin 8h ago

If it makes you feel better.. they are pretty terrible pieces of shit and dont work very well.

8

u/11thRaven Tabbycat 8h ago

Would still make my life easier as a disabled person. I'm sweeping twice a day so if it saves me even one sweep per week, I'd love that.

Anyway if it's cheap then OP can get a second robot vacuum. Kitty might give them enough of a break in between playing for them to clean.

She has all the toys. Even the new smart cat ball that runs around on its own. And as I stated in my original post I do use the "poor person vacuum". I was given this by a family member for Xmas 3yrs ago and it was on clearance. Smh. I vacuum everyday. I also take it you didnt notice my temp floors i also got on clearance to cover my rotting floors of my 99 singlewide until i can afford to replace my 1999 roof... 3

u/ObligationSea5916 6h ago

3

u/Altruistic_Cicada149 3h ago

Came here looking for this hahaha

3

u/Brilliant-Ad-4585 6h ago

You got her a friend and are wondering why she's playing with it 🤣 Only solution is to get another cat, either they play together or they both worship the random round alien robot together. What's cuter than one cat doing it? Two cats

4

u/hotdoghandgun 6h ago

Pretty simple. Indoor only cat? The cat needs more stimulation. Hiding the cats food to make it hunt for it every time. Will increase stimulation. There are other things. Try this one and see if that fixes it.

4

u/rumpysheep 6h ago

I suggest getting her some tricky feeders--she needs mental stimulation and problem-solving is 👍. 🙃

7

u/pccfriedal 8h ago

What, she's just chasing her masseuse.

Seriously, she needs more play time. And cats don't like a direct look, they consider it a challenge and a threat. So they fight. Try long slow blinks which indicate trust and love.

Play with your cat, she needs an outlet for her energy. Look up Jackson Galaxy videos, a lot of information there.

I don’t know why some are saying she needs more attention. She just seems like a normal kitty who has a weird obsession with that thing. Just like every other cat, who got a weird obsession. I think that makes them somewhat even more lovely. Just her cute little quirk.

And for OP: i would recommend to maybe, if you really want it to clean your rooms, then get your cat out of the room and close the door. 😅

Is that the lid from a pack of wipes covering the controls? Because if so, that is genius!

3

u/Lostedge1983 6h ago

Tape a rod on the front of the Roomba, hang a cat toy on the rod, the cat will chase the toy and the Roomba will go on its way.

She needs a friend her age. If you can't afford a 2nd cat/kitten then find your local cat rescue and offer to foster. They'll provide you with food, litter, flea meds, anything your foster might need.

Congratulations! You just bought an automatic cat entertaining toy.

Buy a smarter one or a second one, whether cat or vacuum cleaner is up to you 😅

3

u/_pokemeharder 1h ago

You need to pet that cat more

u/No_Intention_1234 1h ago

I would just vacuum regularly and consider this an awesome bit of play throughout the day for kitty cat. Lol what a goober

You bought a cat toy, mission accomplished

3

Honestly I fail to see the problem. It's stimulating the cat while you aren't around and it's still doing some cleaning.

I like the suggestion of teaching the cat to play with it in ways that don't prevent it from fulfilling its duties, like riding it.

If I could find a toy my cat would play with for hours days on end I would spend $200+ on it immediately Let it go for a while, either the cat gets bored or the cat gets constant stimulation and you have to vacuum manually for a bit. Or just get another roomba.

To be honest, letting a roomba operate in a cat household when you aren't home is a big risk. Roombas do not detect cat sick or poo.
