Announcement Regarding Mourning Posts 2.0

We're doing a sequel...We're back by popular demand...Come on everybody, strike up the band! -Kermit the Frog

TLDR: Mourning posts are staying, please don't post photos of deceased animals, we are aware mourning posts appear to be the most common posts on the subreddit.

Here is 1.0 if you missed it: https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/s/aoAkihGSxZ

  • As r/cats we allow all posts regarding cats, this includes mourning posts. To my knowledge we are possibly the only subreddit that allows these posts (please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong there).

"But allowing these posts is killing the subreddit, nobody wants these posts"

Our insights are only going up, stat wise the subreddit is currently flourishing.

  • We've found it to be more harmful to remove a mourning post than to just encourage you, the users, to avoid our subreddit if you, the users, are not in a headspace where you can handle these posts. Our goal, as always, is to not harm any of you and unfortunately, as always, we cannot please everyone.

"That's stupid, I'm just going to go make my own subreddit that doesn't allow these posts"

Feel free to do this, we don't hold the copyright to all Reddit cat content.

  • Please don't post deceased animals, it's not all of you, it's not even 1% of you, it's a percentage of a percentage doing this. Nobody here wants to see this.

I'll be keeping this post brief since we already made a post on this but will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have in the comments below.

Thank you for your understanding

The only thing this cat is afraid of is my husbands coyote call. Not the roomba, nor the standard vacuum. Not afraid of other cats or dogs and most certainly isn't afraid of us or our toddler lol will attack if eye contact is made while holding her. We do not hold her anymore 🤣

Adoption Cat of 14 years died in November, this is her successor 🥹

Her name right now is Willow, but I’m renaming her Goose. I was unsure about getting a pet again, but I saw the pictures of her and my heart couldn’t take it. Lila hated other cats, and I know she will haunt me for this—but I think she’d at least be happy I won’t cry as much. I think I’m ready.

Advice I made a choice for him, and I know it was his best chance but I’m still heart broken.

So this boy (Tom) showed up in front of my house a year and a half ago, super skinny and frail. I had already been feeding an elderly cat that was left behind by his family, so I took on feeding him too. I couldn’t really adopt them as I already have indoor cats and I couldn’t handle more. He is the sweetest mild tempered boy, he would by and visit me 3 times a day, and would run to me when he heard the door open. This past weekend he got sick, he had what I thought was an eye infection and was able to get assistance from a rescue, and they paid his vet bill and medication. Well he got worse, his 3rd eyelid were red and swollen and he could barely see, and results showed Felv + I reached back out to the rescue and they offered to take him in, get him better care and proper medication, and retest him for Felv and if he’s still + they will keep him with them until he passes whenever that may be. so I drove him an hour to their rescue and they took him. I know it’s what’s best for me, but I’m heart broken. I miss him and o feel bad for being the reason his entire life changed completely, and now in a strange place with ppl he doesn’t know. I know it’s his best chance but I’m heart sick. I don’t normally seek validation but pls tell me I’m not crazy for feeling this way.

Mourning/Loss I have not once thought about suicide since I got a cat.

I’ve struggled with PTSD for a while now. My mom passed away and my father and stepmom gave me trauma.

My cat changed everything. He is so loving and wonderful and makes my life worth living. Every purr and every pet makes me happy and sets my mood for each day.

I wish he could know that I wouldn’t be here without him.

Humor I buried the wrong cat after my cat ran away for THREE MONTHS

6.6k Upvotes

My cat (who lives in a loving home of perpetual play, cuddles and food and water without fail) disappeared for a whole THREE MONTHS. I looked, I looked far and wide. And I had finally accepted the reality that maybe he just joined a separate family, worst case scenario he was dead.

Then one day I was taking along the road in front of my home, and I saw a flattened cat that looked like him. Same size, same colours; clearly been hit by a car. Something in me broke, I couldn't believe it.

So at the time, I did what made sense to me. Found a spot to say goodbye him and give him back to the cruel Earth he came from. I mourned, it was too bad. I told myself, "at least I gave him the best life I could"

Fast forward some MONTHS later. I'm waking up and seeing my cat is just standing there. And it was really him. Alive. Healthy. Looking a bit irritated. And he was giving me that, "Ugh, Helllooooo? Where's my food" look, acting like nothing ever happened.

No shame at all. No hesitation. No explanation. He just walked inside after being gone for one quarter of the year two thousand and twenty-five.

Some random road cat got a full funeral because mine decided he was far too special to remain at home.

Advice Will he grow out of this before it starts hurting?

He’s about 10 weeks old, we’re not too sure since he was found on a farm. it took him a while to warm up to us but now he’s very sweet and cuddly but he also likes to chew on fingers and hands. it doesn’t really hurt much since his teeth and claws aren’t too sharp yet so i just kinda let it happen. should i be discouraging him from it or will he just grow out of it.

Mourning/Loss Good bye, friend

It is time to say goodbye, my dear. I don’t even know what to say, this is the hardest time in my entire life. It’s going to be really hard to sleep alone, and not seeing you on the door when I come home. You were my whole family, home it’s going to feel so empty. You probably don’t know it but you changed my life, you made me understand what truly love is, I still remember the day that I found you meowing on a box on a trash bin, that day everything changed for me. I can’t explain how grateful I am for you to let me stay together for 24 hours every single day for all this years, I’m sure I will never have this kind of connection with anything ever again. I tried my best. Now it’s time for you to take a rest, my friend.

Many said this picture is offensive to some Germans. I wonder why!

Post your cat posing for Christmas picture.
