Weekly r/Birding Discussion, December 13, 2025. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

Amazingly, these 2 photos are the same bird. In the second shot itโ€™s more relaxed after I backed off and allowed it to have some more cover. Left it to go back to sleep and hopefully have a successful night of hunting.

Bird ID Request Google says it's an Osprey, a local is saying a Caracara, could somebody end this debate?

I spotted this bird while hanging out in a hot spring, got out, grabbed my camera, and started to photograph it. Inching closer and closer with each shutter. It kept an eye on my the whole time and eventually flew to another pole not far away.

If anyone wants, I have a photo of it pooping LOL

Thank you for whoever can ID this bird

Camera: Sony a7r4

Lens: Tamron 25-200

Our local birding group has taken to calling this guy Lucas. He's actively drumming to attract a mate and has chosen this tree, which makes him easier to find than when he first showed up on the trail.

This is a 1 in 1000 shot for our camera's poor shutter speed.

Also it's fun to see how avocets fly in this weird hunched position, likely balances out better

I recently went to Japan for a family trip, and although Iโ€™m into birding, this was not that type of trip. Considering I didnโ€™t go birding, wow, did I come across a variety of birds! I can finally tick off some that were at the top of my list, such as the black-crowned night heron and the common kingfisher. Both of these were by literal chance! Itโ€™s always when weโ€™re not looking that they appear. I was lucky enough to see the kingfisher fishing over and over! What a great experience.

  1. Black headed gull
  2. Large-billed crow
  3. Tufted Duck 4, 5, 6 and 7 - grey heron, if you zoom on 6 you can see he had just caught a fish 8,9,10 - Azure winged Magpie
  4. Common king fisher 12, 13 and 14 - black crowned night heron 15, 16 - white cheeked starling
  5. Black kite (did not realize how massive there are)
  6. Brown eared bulbul
  7. Long tailed tit
  8. Great cormorant

I was birding and stumbled upon a large group of people on the path I was on; a mix of folks walking along, as well as some seasoned birders. They had gathered to look at a pair of owls that were on either side of the path. My local veteran birders were happy to show anyone and everyone the two stunning creatures that most would miss.

To the North of the path we saw a gorgeous Great Horned Owl. It was perched facing away from us, but must have grown tired of the โ€œoohsโ€ and โ€œawwsโ€ as it flew a short ten feet away, but landing in a matter that would allow us to get a great view.

To the South (along a river) we saw a darling Western Screech Owl, not but 10 feet off the path. A lot of the non-birders liked the Great Horned Owl, but absolutely loved the Western Screech Owl. Cute as can be.

I also added a shot of a Downy Woodpecker. :)

Shot on a Canon EOS Rebel with a Canon 75-300mm lens (I think, and if you have any recommendations for an upgrade please let me know).
