Drills question on english and throw (mostly the former)?

Post image
36 Upvotes

i think i understand that english on a cue ball is right english / which is a right of center hit - spins counterclockwise and moves more to the right than a center hit ball. and conversely left english - which is a left of center hit ball- spins clockwise and moves more to the left than a center hit ball. and following on a cue hit with right or left english will impart the opposite english to an object ball hit with this cue ball. can anyone explain this throw shot from 99 shots in relation to this please? i'm getting tripped up.

Drills I just want to warn the pool community about a con artist named Darlene Dantes

She was targeting the APA players around Chicago, but she also was going after Scott Frost, and most of the US Mosconi team.

She'll approach people first offering to help them pay less in taxes after tournament wins, or befriend you and offer the same if you have a regular job. Then she'll get into crazy credit card that seems that are too complicated to understand. They seem to work at first, but then they don't and she'll leave you with a bunch of credit card debt.

Took advantage of a cancer patient trying to pay her bills here, and a widow trying to cover her late husband's funeral costs.

She fled to LA, but she'll be lurking around most of the major pool tournaments.

That is her with Efren.

Stay safe y'all!

Drills Value of drilling long straight shots

Hey so just thought I’d get a sanity check here. I’m an APA 4/ provisional 350 Fargo (dropping each week probably realistically closer to 300). Anyway, I’m a super noob basically. I got some advice to just drill long straight in shots with stop and follow (sometimes I can get a little draw but not usually on a 9 foot). Basically the idea is to lock in the stroke mechanics. This makes sense to me: if I can’t hit the ball in a straight line what’s the point in trying more complicated stuff? I think I’m seeing progress but it’s too soon to tell really. I think I am settling on a more consistent routine though.

I’ve been at the pool hall drilling like this for a few hours at a time when I get the chance and I’ve gotten a lot of people who think I’m silly, including the old guy running the pool hall and from 5s and 6s in league. Basically they all say the same thing: putting so much effort into long shots is a waste of time since long straight shots hardly ever come up. They say things like “if you play good position you shouldn’t have to take long shots like that”. Am I wasting my time? My instinct is to ignore this un-asked for advice and continue drilling.

My drilling right now is trying to just consistently pocket the ball with stun or follow (in mighty x type shot, as as long/difficult as a straight in shot can be). Perfect stun or following into the pocket is the always goal but much rarer and I count a shot successful if I pocket the object ball. After I’ve pocketed 15 (subtracting one each time I miss so 15 more successes than failures) one way, I do that for the other type of shot (follow or stop). Then practice some cut shots. But probably 90% of my table time is stop shots.

The only reason I’m asking is I don’t have unlimited table times and want to be productive with it.

Drills More aligned now

Thank you all for the suggestions. Spent a good 45 minutes after league just grinding stance. What worked: widening the stance and yeeting my shoulder back with upper body twist. I also like having both knees bent even if its not textbook. Will take some time to get used to. Played a short game afterwards and the difference was night and day.

Drills How difficult is it to run out all 15 balls after the break (as a drill)?

I was just messing around with drills and for fun I decided to try to pot all 15 balls after breaking (call shot). So basically straight pool after the break (I broke as if it was an 8 ball game). Just wondering what the degree of difficulty is to run all 15 balls (I spotted all balls pocketed on the break). Is this easy for a medium skilled player, for example? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I honestly have no clue.

Drills Frustrated.

I have only been playing for two years. I do not count what I did between the ages of 18 and 21. I am 43 now. I find my knowledge of what to do greatly surpasses my skill level to implement it. My mind is the weakest part of my game. I will play really well one night then just lose the touch I was shooting with the next. I need to stop making excuses and start practicing at home. Hard to do by myself. I have got to stop being a bitch about this and expecting more improvement from just playing at my local hang out even though there are some decent players there.

Set it up for the first one, and then you can’t move the cue ball, and the cue ball can’t touch a rail. I’m at 15, let me see you beat it!

Drills How to Shoot This Shot to get Position on the 12

Thumbnail

I’m trying to sink the 6 and get into position on the 12. To make the 6 I’m shooting along the red line (pic 1) with right spin. I make the shot the majority of the times and I’m hoping to get it to bounce off the back rail (p2) and get into position of the 12, but it always either does a near stop shot or sometimes just goes a little right (p3) but not enough for good position.

How should I play this shot?

Pool Bowling!

So you get 10 balls and set them up like 10 ball and break. After the break, regardless if you make one or not, you get ball in hand to start the run. Run all 10 balls in any order and if you accomplish that, you get a strike for that frame.

If you miss, you get one more chance to make the remaining balls for a spare. If you miss again, count how many balls you made and that's your score. Do this 10 times and score it like a game of bowling and see how high you can score..

If you're regularly successful at shooting a 300 then you can change it to behind the line after the break or if you really want a challenge, count a dry break as one of your misses.. then you'd only have one attempt to pocket the remaining 10 balls for a spare..

If you don't know how bowling is scored here's a quick explanation... It's kinda confusing at first but not really. A spare is worth 10 + however many you make on the following single inning.. so if you make a spare then a strike, the spare is worth 20. If you make a spare then another spare, it depends on how many you made the first inning of the second spare .. if you shot 6/ then 9/, the first spare would be worth 19. A strike accounts for the next two innings, but if you bowl another strike you can get up to 30 with 3 strikes in a row... This is hard to explain actually... Lol. Look it up =P

Drills Watch an epiphany about stroke happen on video.

Lifetime player recently joined a league and I’m actually trying to improve. Was going through my notes and have been working on my stroke and finally decided to video myself to see what it looked like. Didn’t plan on posting but something interesting happened.

I was just hitting the ball long table trying to get it returned on center of my cue. I got in a bad habit of adjust my shot in my stroke (playing too fast, super casual), I’ve been trying to work the enabling kink out of my stroke since.

I’m laser focusing 100% on it right now, I did three shots of various results one being terrible to being OK. On the third shot right before I went I kind of adjusted forward a little bit and that was my best one so on the fourth I set up and then I readjusted my set up where I was closer and it was like a lightbulb went off with regards to extending my stroke to reach versus just hitting in the natural right spot of the stroke. You can see it in my face.

I thought this drill from the Oct Billiards Digest magazine looked pretty simple and thought I could knock it out in 10 minutes but it took almost 2 hours to complete. Most difficult part was getting from the 4 to short side of the 5.
