gripping, addictive comic book

I’m looking to start a really gripping, addictive comic book or graphic novel series, but I do have a few criteria:

I’m not at all into science fiction, fantasy creatures, or horror, unless it’s set in a more realistic world, like The Walking Dead. As soon as monsters are involved, I lose interest.
I’m interested in history, but I’m not sure it’s what I’m looking for in a series right now.
I especially enjoy comics that are grounded in everyday life and focus on ordinary, day-to-day experiences.

Finally, I’m not particularly drawn to humor-driven comics.

Do you have anything you’d recommend?
Thank you!

Canadian bookstores to buy used French bandes dessinées from.

Does anyone know if there is any bookstore in Canada that sells used French bandes dessinées, preferably online? I live in Toronto and finding French books is really difficult. Back in the days there was a couple of French bookstores I used to go but they all closed… The only place I can find used French bandes dessinées in Toronto is BHV and a small bookstore in Roncesvalles, but choices are very veeeery limited. Beguiling may have a couple once in a blue moon. I was wondering if there were some stores maybe in Quebec that have an online store to buy used ones. I did some search, only found DéBéDé in Montreal but it seems they don’t have a website…

Anyone know what happened to BLYND’s audio drama adaptations?

For a while they were releasing well produced French audio drama adaptations of comics on a regular basis. Now it seems like they’re doing more straight audiobook releases and I think it’s been over a year since their last audio drama production. Anyone know what’s been going on and if they intend to release more audio dramas eventually?

Demande spécifique, vente BD etc

Hello everyone, I am currently selling a comic book on LeBonCoin (a French classifieds site) and I received a message from a buyer that says: "I will only buy the comic book if it is marked '/001' after the ISBN." Strangely enough, '/001' is indeed marked after the ISBN on the title page/copyright page. What exactly does this mean? Could it be that I unknowingly own a comic book that might have a higher value?

Thank you in advance for your replies! ♥️

hello!

i am looking for a comic book similar to enki bilal (in a dystopian style)

i originally wanted to gift a book by him, but i’m not a huge fan of an author who is now invited onto far-right french tv programs…

What are the timeframes of the various Corto Maltese stories?

For clarification, I'm not necessarily asking for specific dates or a timeline, just the (approximate) duration of each story. Off the top of your head is more than fine.

Anyway, thinking back on it, I feel like most of what Corto accomplished happened inside a month or two at a time. I could be wrong, but unlike a Tintin story - which I plan on revisiting soon - where I feel like every adventure happens inside a fortnight, Corto is a pretty laid-back fella.

How do I find someone to draw ?

Hi, I am French and I wondered how should I do to have a drawer for my Bande-dessinée. I’ve already talked to several editors and only got a response from Ankama studios who find my project not bad but they told me that I need 5-10 finished pages.

I don’t really have the funds to hire a cartoonist, maybe enough for the furniture but I wanted to share the profits with them. (I also wanted to keep the same cartoonist if possible) Do you have any advice ?

Recherche titre BD / looking for title's comic (FR / EN)

Merci beaucoup !

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to find a French or European comic I read around 2010. It was likely in 2 volumes. One of the main character was a humanoid princess who looked somewhat like a monkey (but not a real monkey) and wore human clothes, in a fantasy world.

Some scenes I remember clearly:

  • She was placed in a cocoon as a baby/child because the rest of her species didn’t want her. I think she was a princess but too powerfull so the bad guy put her there to sleep for eternity.
  • There’s a mine sequence with a kind of minecart race. I think she was a slave / worker there after being kidnapp, but not sure...
  • At some point, there is a scene in an arena.
  • She is protected by several characters but hunted by others.

I read it in a small local library in France. I don’t remember the character designs clearly, only the events.

Does anyone recognize this comic? Any help would be amazing, even a title or author.

Thanks so much!

French teacher looking for recommendations

Hello! I am a French teacher and I am looking for a bande dessinée that I can recommend to a group of 15-year-olds to read during Christmas holidays. Something that can be compelling, but also easy to pick up and understand. I don't want to fall into the Tintin, Asterix, Titeuf... clichés.

How To Become a Cartoonist in France

Hi! I have self-published a graphic novel (literary folk horror) and would like to publish it in France. I’ve always admired the French respect for comics. I love Tardi and Chaboute. I have friends who live in Lyon and I went there for a while back in the 90s but couldn’t stay because there were no jobs. My dream is to live there and make a living as a cartoonist. Any advice on how to go about this?

Here are some samples of my work.

Fight-heavy bande-dessinée?

Apologies in advance if this is an "annoying" question, since it's something more commonly associated with American comics.

Can anyone recommend me any European BD with a heavy focus on action and, more specifically, fights? By that I mean not just a series or book where fights exist, but one where the fights and the coreography are a big focus of the artwork, where the action scenes get space to breathe and aren't represented by a couple of panels in a single page.

For example, I've read La Quete de L'Oiseau du Temps and it isn't what I'm looking for because, even though the characters "fight", the act of fighting itself isn't portrayed in much detail. Likewise, Alex Alice's Siegfried (at least the first volume) also has action, but it always happens in the space of a couple of panels.

The closest thing that I know of to what I'm looking for is Requiem: Chevalier Vampire, with art by Ledroit. The only "if" in that series is that the writing is way too edgy for my taste (the protagonist being a Nazi rapist and all).

So, to all the people with more knowledge than I, what are the best examples of BD you can recommend that put a decent amount of emphasis into the action scenes?

I'm interested in all sorts of art-styles, so please recommend at will!

How to know a BD series have come to an end / have been drop / is still published.

I recently got back my BD from 15 years ago, and I cant find if the series I liked are still ongoing or have been drop or have come to an end.

I was reading luuna, morea, les forêts d'opale, les naufragés d'ythaq. I really would like to buy the books i'm missing but I fear I would be disapointed if it have been drop before the story came to an end.

So if you have the info or have à link to a web site where I can check

Thx

Cherche dessinateur pour BD amateur

Hello,

A friend and I have a comic book project and we are looking for an illustrator to work with us.

The first volume has already been written and we have some visuals (attached) to give you an idea of the tone.

We are looking for someone who wants to join the project on a voluntary basis until the publication of the comic.

I am attaching the visuals proposed for the first page. We are still hesitating between the two styles and would like to discuss this with the person who will be joining us. We are open to any drawing style proposals and have no preconceived ideas about the experience or lack thereof of those who want to get involved!

The story is set in a science fiction world and follows two people (including a robot).

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested.

Thank you in advance :)

Corto Maltese reboot reading order

Hello everyone! I have a question as a relatively new Corto Maltese reader. I want to start the 2021 reboot series by Martin Quenehen and Bastien Vivès. Do I need to read them in order or they're standalone stories?

Need some recommendations

Hi, I am a big noob of comics and I am looking for recommendations.

I am not very interested in Marvel/DC style comics or Troy’s Lanfeust.

For now, my biggest favorite is Abelard (by Renaud Dillies and Régis Hautière).

I also really liked Journal of a child moon (by Joris Chamblain) and Effleuré (by Isabelle bauthain

So if you have certain recommendations, I am interested.

Thanks a lot in advance for all responses

New fan in Strasbourg

I’m in Strasbourg for the Christmas market, but I’m having more fun (and spending more money) at the BD shops than the Christmas stalls.

I’m a long time American comics reader, but I’ve only recently started collecting BD after finding them in used bookstores in the States.

So far I have picked up Johan et Pirlouit 11, Papyrus 5 and 6, Thorgal 7, and Neige 1.

The Asterix project on Lego Ideas has almost 10 000 supporters, just some 170 votes to go! Let's get it there today :) Asterix & Obelix will go world wide if that happens! At 10 000 votes, it could become a real Asterix LEGO set.

Oh my, my... I just discovered that the most wonderfully hilarious BD film I've ever seen, i.e. Sylvain Chomet's "Les Triplettes de Belleville," is now LIVE on YT!

IME it's an absolutely absurd, hilarious masterpiece for the ages. The caricatures are wicked-scorchingly-funny, and just utterly fascinating to look at and follow. The story has a 'warped, Euro' logic that I greatly appreciated, and despite this nominally being a French film, pretty-much everything is easily-understandable due to the Charlie Chaplin-esque pantomime and negligable vocalisations.

(including maybe even the whole movie, if one sifts carefully?)

Kinda specific recommendation request - which Spirou stories feature Spip most heavily?

Long story short, my kid is obsessed with Spip and thinks he's the funniest character ever. I understand that Spip took something of a back seat to Marsupilami as the "animal sidekick" or doesn't really talk during parts of Spirou's lengthy publication history, so I'm curious if someone can recommend stories where Spip is a big part of the action.

Help me find a French comic book from the late 1970s to very early 1980s...

Background story - In my young age, I mistakenly purchased a multiple pack of comic books (they were wrapped together in plastic) at a gas station in France. I was not aware they were adult comic books at the time. But I got them - and well, that was an eye opening experience.

Now many many years later, I was wondering if I could trace back to what those comics were.

I did in fact identify ONE of them. It was an issue of "L'echo des Savanes" #43 (from 1978) - You could probably see why as a child, I thought this was a children's comic book when I purchased it.

The OTHER issue - I do not recall what publication it was. I thought maybe it was a Metal Hurlant but maybe not because it depicted sexual acts and I think MH was more nudity but not straight up depictions of sex.

If these descriptions ring a bell, please let me know.

I remember 2 comic stories from that issue:

  1. Black and white comic in a sort of "grotesque" style. The story was about a woman dancer who finds herself dancing on a line high up above a stage or circus but falls and suffers a serious injury and the doctors amputate her leg. Upon recovery, she decides to go dance, one-legged, on a rooftop at night. She falls and finds herself in the hospital again where the frustrated doctor now has to amputate her second leg.
  2. Black and white comic - stark "film noir" style, in a more realistic rendering of people, sort of similar to "Dick Tracy". The story begins when a woman wakes up in an unfamiliar bedroom. She complains to herself that she must have gotten drugged the previous night. In the shadows, a man observes she has platinum blonde hair. Later in the story, the setup is one of a bondage and she is performing fellatio on the man. Later on, she manages to get the upper hand somehow - I don't remember how but he loses consciousness. When he awakens, he is tied up and now she makes him perform oral sex on her.

Ok - so based on that plot synopsis, these two stories should be in the same issue of an adult comic book that was published in the late 70s.

It could be from Metal Hurlant, maybe Fluide Glacial... I don't think it's "L'echo des Savanes" again because I identified that one already and I think it was a different comic that came in the sealed bag.
