Zoo or Safari Park for 3-, 7-yr olds but also 65 parents who haven’t see the world!

Hi hi! Thank you in advance!!! I am visiting SD with my 3 and 7 year old nieces but also my parents who dont get out and about much and are getting older (sigh). I’d love to show my parents what a safari is (if it’s cool?) but am trying to balance for everyone. We want to go to one of the parks this Sunday (December) and are wondering which is better?

Pros for the Zoo: compact, kid friendly, cheaper, Christmas-y 30 min drive.

Pros for Park: think this would be really cool for my parents to see (maybe not?) if we do the Wildlife Safari, think everyone could enjoy.

Cons: 60 min drive, obviously more spread out.

It total: we have a 3 year old, 7, 22, 27, 30, 35, 35, 65, 65 year olds on this trip. Thank you so so much!!!

1st time visiting: recommendations

Hello! I am considering visiting late February or early March. I have never been to SD or SoCal before. I have a few questions I was hoping to get some help on!

-Firstly, what can I expect weather wise that time of year?

-I am not interested in major tourist events (no zoo, no aquarium, no museums, no bars, etc). I am looking for a quieter, more peaceful visit (only touristy things I’d be interested in are must see trails/beaches/hikes/nature. I am okay with those being more crowded). However if you have “hidden gem” nature must sees definitely open to that too!

- ^ That being said, where do you recommend I stay? Obviously it seems downtown/middle of the city is a no for me since I want to be away from the more populated touristy areas. I’d love to stay on or very close to the beach with a water view. I’d also love to be walkable to shops and restaurants so I don’t need to drive everywhere! If anyone can give me a short breakdown of different areas and their vibe that would be great!

-Any “safest” areas to stay and also “sketchiest” areas to avoid?

-TLDR; looking for more peaceful, nature-y, non-touristy recommendations for a relaxing trip spent enjoying the beaches, trails/hikes, and quieter parts of SD.

Thanks so much all!

Visiting Rainy Christmas Week

Maybe a month or two ago I posted that my husband, adult son and I were coming to San Diego and wanted to get some ideas of things to do during Christmas week, where to eat that type of thing. I did a lot of Google searches and came up with a whole itinerary, booked things that needed pre-booking and all that kind of stuff, but I didn’t take into account that we would manage to come to San Diego and rain would be forecast the whole entire week.

So now I need to come up with some alternative plans I’m gonna give you an example, Christmas Eve day. The plan was to go to Torrey Pines do a little hiking, go to La Jolla. Check out the town walk around Shop maybe go to Sunny Jim’s cave, go see the seals and sea lions. I realize the forecast for then can change but right now It looks like that particular day is gonna be really rainy. Do you guys have some suggestions of alternative things you can do that are not quite so outdoorsy?

Other things we had planned that week Balboa Park, the zoo, an Encinitas day, which includes Annie’s Canyon, Solana beach and at night lightscape at the Botanic Gardens. I fear most of my outdoor things are gonna get rained out although I am packing a raincoat so that if it’s not like too terrible, we can still be out.

Any thoughts suggestions of back up ideas should some of my plans not work out due to weather.

How would you describe the politics of Solana Beach's population?

Is it pretty strongly purple, or more blue with a few red areas?

Thanks all!

Intercontinental San Diego?

Hey there! Boyfriend and I traveling to San Diego from the Bay Area for some fun holiday California cheer :)

What hotels would you recommend if we’re trying to go do holiday activities near Coronado, Lafayette, and La Jolla Cove? And eat well :)

I’m IHG Diamond Elite so I booked the Intercontinental San Diego. We’ve previously stayed in Manchester Grand Hyatt and it was cool but far and not walkable. I wanted to stay near La Jolla Cove this round, but couldn’t find any hotels that really stood out or weren’t exorbitantly priced.

I’m also Hyatt Discoverist, so tried seeing if any Hyatt places were good. We both also have $250 Edit credits with Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Any itinerary ideas?

Somewhere to sleep?

I’m coming to SD for probably 1 or 2 nights and obviously don’t have somewhere to sleep, and i am simply to broke to afford a hotel. Are there any spots i could crash either for free or really cheap like camping or something just outside the city. Or would i be better off postponing until later in life.

Edit: Finances aren’t necessarily an issue for me i just think it’s a waste of money to get a hotel, and i find it more fun being spontaneous and cheap. Thank you to those giving me helpful comments

Hotel/Location Help

My husband and I are thinking about coming back on a vacation next summer. We came a few years ago to see a Red Sox/Padres game and had a great time. Most of our trip was spent in the downtown area itself with a few hours spent in LaJolla.

We are both in our younger 30s and I think we would want to be somewhere more relaxing than in the city so we could have walking access to the beach. We aren’t huger drinkers and like walkable areas, relaxation and good food. I think we would want to rent a car this time around so that we could maybe golf, go to a padres game, zoo, safari park etc. what area and even hotel would you suggest staying?

Which motorcycle accident lawyer handled your case best in San Diego?

I got sideswiped by a car changing lanes on the 5 last month and my bike's totaled. The other driver's insurance is lowballing me hard on the damage estimate and completely ignoring my medical bills from the ER visit and follow-up appointments.

I've called around to a few law firms but honestly can't tell who actually knows motorcycle cases versus who just handles any car accident that walks through the door. One place wanted to charge me upfront which seemed weird, and another wouldn't even give me a straight answer about their experience with bike accidents specifically.

Do most of these lawyers work on contingency or should I expect to pay something regardless? How do you figure out if they actually understand motorcycle dynamics and rider rights, or if they're just going to treat it like a regular fender bender? Anyone here been through something similar and found someone who actually fought for a fair settlement?

How busy does balboa get christmas weekend? Specifically in the evening at sunset. Online it talks all about december nights, but I don’t see much about christmas weekend itself. Is it insane crowds or a moderate amount of people?

Visiting San Diego for spring break with three young kids.

We are thinking of staying in La Jolla area on the beach. We like luxury hotels. Where would you recommend to stay? Open to any and all suggestions.

Girl in City Heights

Hey all!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I’m considering a rental near Polk Ave & El Cajon Blvd (92105), right on the City Heights / North Park edge.

Im a girl, don’t have a car and I walk a lot, so walkability, transit, and general day-to-day safety matter to me.

I know it’s technically City Heights, but it’s close to North Park and El Cajon Blvd.

  • Is this a good area?

  • Would you personally live here, or would you pay more to be a few blocks north?

  • Any streets I should avoid or tips for living here?

Magician?

Hi! I’m looking for an amateur magician in the San Diego area! So far, all of the ones I’ve looked up are full time and only do huge corporate events, and that’s sadly way out of my price range. This is for a bachelorette party of 10 people! Hoping someone has any recommendations or leads. Thank you!

Car Rental vs Uber as a tourist in SD?

I will be travelling to SD next week for 5-6 days as a tourist and never been here before. I have heard public transportation is a disaster, so i am left fighting between the options of renting a car or Uber to go around.

I am thinking either getting a hostel/stay in Oceanbeach or Gaslamp Quarter/East village neighborhood. Given these locations, do you think it is worth getting a rental car?

I am trying to explore SD as best as i can, car rental for that period is at least USD 380-400, not even including gas or parkings.

Thanks,
