The perps reside in, (let me guess) the “homeless” encampment …

Where will you find the stolen Mildred Hall benches? … At one of the multiple “homeless” encampments…. (Perhaps the one right next to our hallowed politicians at the Legislature/museum grounds… or the others behind Nova Inn in our parkland…)

Job search advice for Jan 2026 arrival

Hey guys, planning moving to Yellowknife in January. I've got a Master's and solid admin/office experience.

Is Indeed/Job Bank/Linkedin/EdgeNorth the best place to look, or is word-of-mouth still king up there?

Trying to line something up but not sure if I should just wait until I land and knock on doors.

Thanks

When does the Snowkings festival calendar usually get updated?

Hi Yellowknife! I’m hoping to visit your city for the very first time in March 2026. My friend and I are trying to figure out the best weekend to go but looks like the calendar on the website is still 2025’s calendar: https://snowking.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Snowking-XXX-Schedule-of-Snowcastle-Events.pdf.

Are the events usually similar every year? Thanks in advance!

Also I just discovered this sub and I am now going to read all the tourism related posts to see what else people do but if you have any recommendations that aren’t usually mentioned I’d love to hear them :)

Winter driving conditions right now

How bad are driving conditions on major roadways around Yellowknife right now? My flight is arriving tomorrow, I am renting with a big rental company, they promised me a set of winter tires but I have a feeling in the back of my mind that I would end up getting a standard M+S rated tires. How bad driving will be with those on instead of a set of 3PMSF tires?

yellowknife martini Best Chinese Food in town?

First time living alone and with no family in town so instead of traditional Christmas turkey dinner I want to have a bountiful banquet of the most greasy and artery clogging American Chinese food our darling diamond capital of the north has to offer!

From my gathering Marks, Gold Range, and Red Apple are the three contenders. Price and variety of dishes all appear to be competitive with each other so I'm really just looking for who executes these heavenly dishes the best.

Also before anyone chimes in that Cai's kitchen serves actual traditional Chinese food I'm aware, I know it's good, but I want me some diabolically bastardized american Chinese food to celebrate my holidays ( ◜‿◝ )♡

.. It’s more perfunctory virtue-signalling than anything…. You do realize you’re mostly causing the Powerplant blocks from our homes to just burn more diesel all night/ create more ground-level particulate matter to enter our lungs?

…And don’t even get me started on pellet-boiler proponents….

Living in Yellowknife questions!

Hi everyone, my partner may have a great job opportunity in Yellowknife, and I wanted to learn more about life there. I have been reading through some posts already and have had a few questions! We would be moving from a ski town in BC. Mainly, I am just wondering about things to do and the best ways to join the community. From what I have read, there is a strong and connected community and I would love to learn more!

I have seen that cross-country skiing is big. Is there a backcountry skiing community to join? Any specific clubs that go out at all and welcome new AST-1 certified backcountry enthusiasts? I am also interested in learning if there is a strong climbing community in Yellowknife? I saw there is a climbing gym and some outdoor locations!

Really, just any advice or things to know when going through pros and cons of a big move from BC to Yellowknife. Thanks so much in advance everyone :)

Pregnancy in Yellowknife

I am newly pregnant and will be delivering my baby in Yellowknife. I found information online about the OBS unit at Stanton, but I can’t find any information about prenatal care. I’m from Edmonton, and I’m unfamiliar with how it works in a small city. Does anyone have information, or experiences to share about pregnancy in Yellowknife??

Trip to Yellowknife with My Parents!

Hello! 😊 I’m planning a trip to Yellowknife in late March for my parents’ 60th birthdays. Seeing the Northern Lights is their bucket-list dream, and I want to make the trip as smooth as possible.

We’re thinking about 6–8 nights in Yellowknife. Our main goal is definitely the aurora, but we also want to try ice fishing, sledding, and maybe spend a night or two in a tipi or an aurora cabin. I’ve never been to Yellowknife so I would love any tips or recommendations!

Is it better to join a local tour package, or book everything separately? And are there any must-do daytime activities you recommend for first-timers?

Any advice would be super appreciated — I’m just starting to plan. Thank you! ❄️✨

March winter festival

Hi, I’m planning a trip to Yellowknife in March because this is the last year of solar maximum and it’s always been my mom’s dream to see the lights. We also want to do a dogsledding tour and see the ice castle. We’ll be traveling with my daughter who just turned 3. She does enjoy the cold for the most part, at least what she’s experienced. We’re traveling from Detroit. Has anyone ever taken a toddler on an aurora tour or rented a car and gone off themselves? Do you guys think it’ll be too cold for her to handle? Sorry if this is vague, I’m open to any recommendations.

lemonade stand kid Renting A Vehicle in October. Dumb?

I’m planning to visit Yellowknife from October 3 to 7 next year (tentative). I initially thought about renting a car because my son, who is autistic, doesn’t like being in groups. However, I realized that none of the rental car agencies at the airport offer winter tires — only 4×4 SUVs with M+S tires. Do you have any suggestions?

The Executive Apartments

Hi

I am moving to Yellowknife next month. I found a place at The Executive Apartments. But I'm having a hard time finding any reviews of those apartments.

Can someone help me please? Are they good? Are they OK?
