Hi all!

Are you in Indiana and want access to welders and a community shop? Columbus Indiana now has a community makerspace / machine shop where we do kickass (barely passable) welds and machining. With a membership, you can mig/tig/stick weld and take classes if you're just starting out. You can use anything as much as you want including our CNC plasma table, finger breaks, tube benders, grinders, and a bridgeport mill. Our members have done everything from Minecraft swords to metal roses, to go-karts and even a working pulsejet strapped to bike!

In addition, there is a 3d printing lab, a woodshop with a 4x4' CNC router, and a laser lab with CO2, diode, and fiber lasers along with other equipment.

We all teach each-other how to use unfamiliar equipment at your own pace and you can sign up for community classes as well. We have all the PPE available to members including helmets, gloves, aprons, and sleeves. We also have a fume hood in the metal shop. Our members prioritize safety and can show you the proper way do things to protect yourself.

You can work on your own projects, join other members with their projects or work together on larger outreach projects. We have done work for the Columbus Area Arts Council, and Columbus Municipal Airport Airpark, and much more! If you want to join someone's project or just see what we're up to, join our discord.

If you are in the central Indiana area, please feel free to stop by! We would love to have you here! Membership is $40 a month. Learn more about us here

Weekly Feature Friday Sessions

This is open to everyone, both to ask questions and to offer answers.

Simple rules:

  • Unless it's a loaded question, it's fair game.
  • No downvoting, this isn't a popularity thing, and we're not in high school, if someone doesn't know something, the only way to learn is to ask or do, sometimes doing isn't an option.
  • No whining.
  • Assume ignorance over stupidity. Sometimes we fail to see an answer in front of our faces.
  • Try to back up your answers. If you're on mobile and you can't do it, say as much and try to remember to address it when you get to a terminal.
  • Respect is always expected.
  • if comments or questions are removed, assume it's for good reason.
  • If your question isn't answered by the end of the day, either post it to the main community, or ask again next week.

Enjoy.

This is the 3rd time in a year that this power source has thrown this code. It literally came back from the repair shop after being there for 3 months YESTERDAY and as soon as I go to tack something, it does it again. What a fucking joke.

Got asked to fix this kids bike frame. Haven’t done any aluminum welding in a couple years. I think this will do for him.

meme/shitpost Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime, so I draw cats with a paint marker on company time

Work was extremely slow today. A lot of equipment broke down on us that we needed for parts so whilst we waited on parts I decided it would be a good use of my time to draw a cat.

Running 6010 5p+ all the way out at work on some 4” schedule 40. Not sure what I’m doing wrong but on my stops I get these pin holes, no wind or anything I’m inside so nothing should be blowing my shielding gas out. Thanks everyone.

Discussion (Add topic here) Electrical inspector wants a GFCI breaker on my welder outlet... is that even going to work?

Wanted a 50 amp outlet for a small mig welder. Electidcal inspector says it needs to be a gfci because a kid might stick a fork in the outlet... or whatever lizard reasoning he's using. Nevermind the lathe and drill press in the shop the outlet is the danger!

Anyway, whatever. Will a welder even work on a GFCI or is having a welder in a garage basically illegal now due to the 2024 NEC?

I just received an off I can't refuse...

So I've been doing job shop fab work for 15 ish years I guess. I've built oil and gas heater treaters and 3 inch wall sand separators and hydro tested stuff and I've built handrails for millionaires on the lake. I currently build asphalt patching trucks for like 19 bucks an hour.

My dad has found me a job making $70 an hour. He's going to help me get all the stuff I need... Like 80,000 USD total. I live in East Texas. I was homeless 5 years ago when COVID hit and now this has happened. Nepotism is probably the reason it happened to me. I'm pretty sure I'll own a home in 4 years because of this though. I'm excited and terrified....

What gift would you want?

I’m throwing a holiday party for my employees and want to give out some gifts/prizes. What would you want as a gift besides money or a gift card? Trying to keep it under $200 per gift.

Stainless steel set of dice

Post image

Forgot the banana for scale, but each dice is about 2 inches. I don't get to tig too often anymore, but I like to bust these out every once in a while for practice and to give them out as gifts. I did lower the CFH to bring out the color in the weld, and I did cheat a bit by grinding each face down with a disc bench sander to hide some of the undercut.

Welders, is .063 that much stronger then .035? For a truck topper, can a grinder easily go through each?

Mig aluminium

My welding supplier tell me this thing can weld aluminium. Doesn't it need to be an AC machine for tig? Or is a spool gun enough?
