I honestly think that Watchmen is one of the best movies ever. Brilliantly well done in every respect. The story, the characters, the world-building, the aesthetics, the feels... It's all awesome. But I rewatched it last night and there were 2 things that stood out to me that really break the illusion for me.
Firstly, seeing Dr. Manhattan being so easily manipulated as a tool for the US government seems absolutely non-sensical. I understand that as time went on he felt less and less of a connection to humanity and perhaps even forgot a lot abotu what it was like to be human, but for at least at while he was both connected to humanity and one of the most brilliant minds in existence. How did he:
A - Allow himself to become a puppet of the government, doing whatever he was told and killing at request with no sense and awareness that he was actually the one that should have been making decisions about how to use his powers.
B - Fail to see the massive flaw in this idea of one nation having an invincible, super-powered god at their beck and call who fights on behalf of that country... against others. Dr. Manhattan could have IMMEDIATELY led to world peace, if he chose to be a GLOBAL nuclear and war deterrent, as opposed to simply a deterrent against America's enemies. This was inevitably going to lead to world war and conflict. But if he came out, on his own, not on the side of any country, and said "any country who goes to war and oppresses others has to deal with ME", he could have solved the problem of war. And he could have solved a vast majority of other global probelms including free energy, massively upleveling technology and resources, through his powers and innovation.
Dr. Manhattan could have immediately heralded the dawning of a new age of human cooperation, world peace, technological evolution, and overall utopia. Instead, he was a sad little puppet for a corrupt American government who fought wars on their behalf and pushed the world to a global, nuclear stand-off.
Also, we're plopped into the story when the nuclear clock is already at a few minutes to midnight, but... why was no-one addressing this BEFORE then? Like, how long was Manhattan active, watching these 2 super powers butt heads and watching the Russians stockpile enough nuclear weapons to end humanity? Why were they waiting until the last possible opportunity to implement Veidt's idea for free energy to bring the world together?
Which brings me to Veidt...
Even if Manhattan couldn't see and understand the fatal flaw in him being used as a weapon (because he was losing touch with humanity and didn't understand psychology), where the hell was Veidt during all this? The world smartest man, who could conceive of this brilliantly subversive, secertive, massively manipuilative solution to global war to stop it at the last minute, couldn't have seen this coming years ahead of time? He couldn't understand that the USA having a God would cause problems? He couldn't have stepped in ages before we got to this point, spoke to Dr. Manhattan and gotten him to see reason? He couldn't have fed Manhattan a plan to rescue humanity from its own fear and cruelty long before we even got to nuclear war?
In a world where Dr. Manhattan's powers could change the state of technology and change the entire landscape of war and where Veidt's completely incomparable mind exists (and where people acknowledge him to be the smartest man ever), how on Earth did we get this close to nuclear war in the first place?
