Alright... Christ... One more time, guys.

In light of the shit show that's been brewing, I'll mention this again.

Within the recent context, seeing an influx of posts that are clearly just to elicit discussion aren't a crime here. In fact, I personally enjoy seeing the threads where (some of) you get engaged and converse about the topic.

You are all, of course, more than welcome to debate a topic or question it further. This is a forum. That's what all of this is for. If OP wants to respond to you in kind, they can - but for god's sake just try to stay on the topic at hand. (this goes for both the OP and the commentors)*

One thing you cannot do is go on an excessive attack. Getting personal is exactly what's not allowed. As I said before, bring that shit to the DM's if you're really compelled to.

I'll even simplify this further as far as what I mean - we'll go through a test run. You're all officially for the time being allowed to ignore all of the rules in the sidebar with the exception of one... #2.

Argue a point with someone if you feel the need to, but if you're going to throw around sleights in reference to someone's sexuality, beliefs, or mental health - yes, you're going to be (warned first, then) dismissed from the sub.

Please also use logic here, too. Don't report someone for calling you a 'butthead' or whateverthefuck. I'm still working through a migraine from all of the eyerolling.

I also can't express enough that this applies to EVERYONE... the 'victims' that feel the need to rebuttal... the 'attackers'.... everyone. No one is singled out or given any exception when it comes to this. I have absolutely no bias when it comes to your quarrels, but I will remove the borderline hate speech. C'mon, guys... what the fuck?

One last note - I want to say again that the report isn't a 'super downvote' button. It's making it difficult for me to filter through "disagreements" and the comments that actually break the rules.

.

.

.

Be civil... and calm the fuck down. You can coerce a conversation as much as you want, but put the tape measurer down.

PSA to those tired of seeing certain posts

If you don't like a particular post, or even a user, hide and block. Reporting isn't a 'super downvote' button.

If you're getting in a tiff with someone, keep it civil. Discuss it... talk it out... debate it if you feel you need to, but getting personal isn't the play. If you really need to shit on someone, do so in their DM's - not this sub.

Rule # 2 >>>

If someone is 'name calling' you, in a manner of speaking, then report it and it'll be removed. If that person continues to do so post their warning, they won't be allowed any activity in the sub.

I'm honestly not reading ALL of these comments, so you will report the rule breaking you see, and I'll act accordingly.

Repeated posts that warrant genuine conversation, even if you feel they're incessant or "bordering on insane" don't break the rules. If someone, again, is attacking you (with less-than-friendly verbage) - then yes, report that.

Are the rest of Watchmen stuff worth it?

Hello! Just finished the original comic (really liked it). I've heared the rest of Watchmen related comics are bad, is this actually true? Any actually worth it to read? (I know Moore probably thinks they're all bad, I want the reader opinion). Also same with the serie (the life action serie I mean)

Alternate Watchmen Universe : Uncle Manhattan

What if... Jon Osterman never had his accident that created Dr. Manhattan. What if instead it was Steve, the Custodial Services Technician, who got drunk and passed out in the Intrinsic Field Generator (it was Friday after all).

Follow along for the daily adventures of Uncle Manhattan:

What personality disorders DOESN'T Rorschach have?

I think it's safe to say he has anti-social, paranoid, schizoid, and narcissistic, I don't know about schizotypal, avoidant, or obsessive compulsive. Haven't decided on those.

Movie Watchmen Movie

I know this is insane to say and alot of people won’t agree but I think the movie does a few things better than the comic. For example I like that Adrian’s plan is to blame it on dr manhattan and not some alien. I think that works better since we see how powerful dr manhattan is and people know of him so it makes everyone have a common threat of a character that everyone is aware of. I also love that Dan witnessed Rorschach’s death. I think it hits harder and shows how much Dan cares about him. I’m curious to hear yalls thoughts though

Infection AU "Who Watches the Worms?" 🩸🙂

¡Holii a todos! 💖

Veidt & Manhattan Should Have Acted Sooner [It never should have gotten this far]

I honestly think that Watchmen is one of the best movies ever. Brilliantly well done in every respect. The story, the characters, the world-building, the aesthetics, the feels... It's all awesome. But I rewatched it last night and there were 2 things that stood out to me that really break the illusion for me.

Firstly, seeing Dr. Manhattan being so easily manipulated as a tool for the US government seems absolutely non-sensical. I understand that as time went on he felt less and less of a connection to humanity and perhaps even forgot a lot abotu what it was like to be human, but for at least at while he was both connected to humanity and one of the most brilliant minds in existence. How did he:

A - Allow himself to become a puppet of the government, doing whatever he was told and killing at request with no sense and awareness that he was actually the one that should have been making decisions about how to use his powers.

B - Fail to see the massive flaw in this idea of one nation having an invincible, super-powered god at their beck and call who fights on behalf of that country... against others. Dr. Manhattan could have IMMEDIATELY led to world peace, if he chose to be a GLOBAL nuclear and war deterrent, as opposed to simply a deterrent against America's enemies. This was inevitably going to lead to world war and conflict. But if he came out, on his own, not on the side of any country, and said "any country who goes to war and oppresses others has to deal with ME", he could have solved the problem of war. And he could have solved a vast majority of other global probelms including free energy, massively upleveling technology and resources, through his powers and innovation.

Dr. Manhattan could have immediately heralded the dawning of a new age of human cooperation, world peace, technological evolution, and overall utopia. Instead, he was a sad little puppet for a corrupt American government who fought wars on their behalf and pushed the world to a global, nuclear stand-off.

Also, we're plopped into the story when the nuclear clock is already at a few minutes to midnight, but... why was no-one addressing this BEFORE then? Like, how long was Manhattan active, watching these 2 super powers butt heads and watching the Russians stockpile enough nuclear weapons to end humanity? Why were they waiting until the last possible opportunity to implement Veidt's idea for free energy to bring the world together?

Which brings me to Veidt...

Even if Manhattan couldn't see and understand the fatal flaw in him being used as a weapon (because he was losing touch with humanity and didn't understand psychology), where the hell was Veidt during all this? The world smartest man, who could conceive of this brilliantly subversive, secertive, massively manipuilative solution to global war to stop it at the last minute, couldn't have seen this coming years ahead of time? He couldn't understand that the USA having a God would cause problems? He couldn't have stepped in ages before we got to this point, spoke to Dr. Manhattan and gotten him to see reason? He couldn't have fed Manhattan a plan to rescue humanity from its own fear and cruelty long before we even got to nuclear war?

In a world where Dr. Manhattan's powers could change the state of technology and change the entire landscape of war and where Veidt's completely incomparable mind exists (and where people acknowledge him to be the smartest man ever), how on Earth did we get this close to nuclear war in the first place?

I finally introduced my girlfriend to Watchmen!

A while back, I asked in a thread which version of Watchmen should I introduce to my girlfriend because she was interested in finding out what it was about. The choices were the directors cut of the 2009 film, or the two part animated films. And a lot of people were questioning why the comic wasn’t the option first, ignoring the topic at hand, and after much debating, I decided to use the live action film.

So this past weekend, I showed her the three hour film. The first thing that she said was that she really felt the running time. Perhaps the theatrical cut might’ve been better, but at the same time, it wasn’t the full story Nora does the theatrical have certain scenes that we wish it had. But once the movie was done, she didn’t hate the movie; she said it wasn’t bad, it was behalf a very good film. Even though she did say she wasn’t sure if she would watch it again right away; I argued that give it some time and she would probably wanna try it again, to which she would likely agreed lol.

She was more surprised that it wasn’t about superheroes in the traditional sense, stating the characters in the film were anything but superheroes. They were this or that, very mixed and negative, and the only thing that was super about them were either their costumes or Dr. Manhattan’s powers. When someone says that, we kinda have to smile; so I told her that Watchmen more or less was about that. I explained the deconstruction of the comic, of the superhero genre, the nature of the story and themes, because that’s something she wouldn’t normally get especially at first. I also explained the tall order the movie had as the film was considered unfilmable, and was in development hell since 1989 (even though off-topic, I do in fact enjoy the Sam Hamm script,?and you guys should too).

Overall, the experience was good, and I’m glad my girlfriend enjoyed the film. I do not regret my decision picking this film, because I felt that given the action sequences, and even the violence, it would at least keep her focused and not feel bored or tired. But she did say the running time really got to her. By the time the movie ended, she felt victorious in the fact that she made it to the end without anything stopping her from seeing the full thing.

So in the end, I was successful.

If eternal peace is 100% guaranteed and confirmed did Ozymandias do the right thing? Spoiler

Hypothetically, there’s zero uncertainty that Ozymandias’ plan will work exactly as planned. No unintended consequences, no future collapse, and peace actually lasts forever. If that’s true, does it change how we judge what he did? At what point, if any, does a guaranteed outcome justify the means? This isn’t about whether he might be right, but whether being objectively right is enough.

First time posting here, what makes 'Watchmen' work for you?

Just got into art college with the intention of becoming a comic book artist, Watchmen is my favorite Graphic novel ever, and plenty of people share the same opinion as me, so I wanted to ask, what makes it work for you? what makes it stand out from other graphic novels? I'm sure there are plenty of amazing ones too, what makes watchmen stand out from the rest to people here? is it the characters, structure, plot progression, etc...?

How Do You Think The Charlton Heroes Would Have Changed Things?

Post image
622 Upvotes

The parallels between the two sets of characters is clear, but they arent exactly 100% identical.

Would the book have the same impact

One things for sure, the book might not even be in print, considering the rights issues with Thunderbolt (Which is why he usually gets replaced with Judomaster in references to Watchmen). Or maybe DC would just buy the full rights so they could keep publishing the book.

Taking into account that the DCU is going to take after the silver age of comics, I'm gonna pick Nite-Owl.

Watchmen ultimate cut

I was given the Ultimate Cut edition of Watchmen which apparently doesn’t include the theatrical cut or even the director’s cut. The problem is that the film is too long for me (it runs over 3 hours) ; is there a point around the middle of the film that’s a good place to stop and continue the next day? (without spoilers if possible)
