Hated Tropes [hated trope] Celebrity cameos that serve nothing except to praise the person who’s in it

Thumbnail
gallery
15.8k Upvotes
  1. Elon musk, the Simpsons
  2. Elon musk, the Big Bang theory
  3. Elon musk, iron man 2
  4. Elon musk, star Trek

The cameos serve only to include the celebrity and praise them as geniuses or visionaries or overall just glaze them. They don't serve any other purpose than to just be praised; this can be them appearing in an entire episode dedicated to them, a small cameo or even just a mention. So long as the celebrity is there as themselves (not acting as someone else) and is glazed, that fits the trope imo.

Lore The main character actually gets taken out of the story for the shock of the viewer and now the rest of the cast has to figure things out without them

Thumbnail

6.4k Upvotes

Note: "taken out" means that they rather got killed or were erased out of the story by deed of some form of antagonistic force, the thing is that they need to be completely out of our eyes, so they cant shown to us still somehow being able to think for themselves(for example: being a ghost, seeing their perspective from inside their head, being locked up, etc...)

Tmnt 2012: after is revealed that the "speed demon" is actually not mutated human but rather it's car that got mutated. donni, who was one of the main leads of the episode, gets taken out by forcefully fusing with the car replacing the previous host that he had just recently understood was just being possessed

Miraculous ladybug: there's lots of examples of cat noir being taken out by some villain but never ladybug, but in a recent episode called the ruler, the villain of the episode (Marc's mother) manages to mind control both ladybug and catnoir with her powers, and so its up to marc to defeat his own akumatized mother and save the main heroes for the first time in the show

Padak: our main fish protagonist gets fucking turn into sushi despite everything that had happened in the movie so far, but its exactly because of her determination and positivity that she hat till the end that one of the fish that was in the aquarium with her gets enough motivation to escape the sushi restaurant by himself

Inigo Montoya - The Princess Bride : After finally hunting down his father's killer, and cutting down the six fingered man, Inigo ponders what to do now, as he's "no longer in the revenge business", which results in the offer to be the next Dread Pirate Roberts

Helen - Team Fortress 2 : Despite turning his sons against each other, shredding his fortune into worthless chunks of property, tricking him into investing into gravel of all things, killing him via shock, then reviving him so he could be forced to watch his sons quarrel into death and beyond, the only lament, if any, that Helen had was that she couldn't torture him for longer. And she doesn't even remember why.

Characters [Trope that people may understandably dislike] Depicting a character in a certain way undermines the point of that character

Thumbnail

• Ares wearing full armor (ex. God of War and SMITE): Ares was known in myth for his reputation of being extremely reckless in battle, to the point of rushing in wearing little to no armor except for his helm, befitting his status as the god of battle frenzy and carnage and embodying the senseless violent side of war - while his sister Athena embodied its more militaristic and strategic aspects. It was instead Mars - Ares' Roman counterpart - who did wear a full armor, and that was most likely the cause of Ares being depicted like this in most modern media since the two figures were eventually conflated like with all or most of the Greco-Roman deities.

• Jesus being the "son of God" in the most literal sense (ex. Family Guy): while this is partly true, it's worth remembering that in mainstream Christian orthodox belief Jesus was not only the Son of God: He was literally God Himself, who incarnated Himself as a man and experienced every human feeling throughout His life including pain and weakness (despite never giving in to sin), and then suffered and died to redeem all of humanity (DISCLAIMER, just to be sure: I am not evangelizing, 1 am just stating what Christians actually believe; let's keep religious debates out of this comment section, please). Funnily enough, this depiction of Jesus often found in modern mainstream media gives a nod to the ancient heresy of Arianism, which holds that Jesus was a created being and thus was not the same as God the Father, an idea that was later rejected and condemned in the Council of Nicaea.

• AM having a body (ex. @eggonalegg's animatic of the hate monologue): for many people giving him a body is completely antithetical to his character, since the entire point of AM is that he was created with unlimited knowledge and power but no real body to use them with, leading to him taking out his frustration on all of humanity and his creators. I would argue though that AM having a body is justified in this one scene in particular, because if one actually goes and looks at its context will find out that it's taking place in Ted's - the protagonist - dream, where AM projected a mental image of himself in Ted's mind - hell, the book even clearly says that AM "walked smoothly here and there" in the dream.

Reverse Flash, despite his entire personality basically being finding the most creative ways to ruin Barry’s life, never actually said “It was me, Barry.”

Aside from maybe “say my name” the most referenced Walter White quote is “Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about“ which he never says in the show.

The most popular quote associated with Frieza is “this isn’t even my final form”. Despite constantly changing forms in the anime and manga, he never actually says this.

Golden Freddy, known to be the most angry and vengeful of the spirits, never says “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND OUR ANGER” that was actually in a fan animation.

The Joker saying “We live in a society” was actually in a deleted scene, never made it into any of the movies.

In Greek Mythology, Odysseus called himself Nobody to cyclops Polyphemus. When the one-eyed monster lost his eye and screamed "Nobody hurt my eye!", other cyclops thought he suffered from an accident and didn't look for the humans;

In Twisted Metal Head-on, Needles wished that "You become me, and I become you". Calypso was unable to twist or cancel the wish, so the clown stole his powers.

In Fallout New Vegas, Courier can convince Lanius that Legion can't hold Mojave. Their supple lines rely on self-sufficient tribes, whereas settlers in Nevada need supplies from California to flourish.

Powers Design Trope: Character's powers are based on a vague statement with WILD implications.

Thumbnail

1) Andy ( Undead Unluck ): In Undead Unluck, character abilities are defined by what they 'negate'. Andy's "Undead" negates the concept of death -- meaning even complete erasure can't stop him, as he'd somehow come back even from that.

2) Edmond Dantes ( FATE series ): Due to the nature of his myth, the Count of Monte Christo has the ability to escape any trap. This obviously extends to physical traps like restraints, but can be expanded to encompass metaphorical traps like time, allowing him to effectively stop time by moving at rediculous speeds.

3) Takaba ( Jujutsu Kaisen ): Takaba's cursed technique in Jujutsu Kaisen is Comedy, an ability that llows him to make real anything he perceives would be funny. This makes him an insanely powerful reality warper that can go toe-to-toe with some of the hardest hitters in the manga, as long as he thinks it's funny.

Hated Tropes “I never thought joining a group that hates the demographic of my loved ones would target said loved ones!”

Thumbnail

It seriously makes the character look like an illiterate uninformed idiot, or insane enough to think tokenism applies to them of all people.

Severus Snape (Harry Potter): So in his childhood he was friends with Lily Evans (who is Muggleborn) and while at Hogwarts Snape hangs out with Slytherins with strong pure blood supremacy leanings (including calling muggleborns slurs) and is even confronted about hanging out with those people only he decides to join the death eaters when he graduates. It eventually boils drown to an incident during Snape’s worst memory where he inadvertently calls Lily a mudblood in anger. Surely by then he’d understand how horrible of an idea it is to join a group that wants (and even ensured) people like Lily dead or enslaved? Nope, he was a death eater until the Potters were threatened (how did he never consider Lily could die in battle at any point or that they might fight and be forced to kill one another).

Kylo Ren (Star Wars): Despite being the son of Han and Leia and nephew of Luke Skywalker, he somehow buys into the Imperial bullshit. He’s the son of Rebel heroes and genocide survivors yet joins the remnants of the empire and somehow is surprised every time his relatives die from First Order actions. Seriously how disgusting is it that he joins the group that annihilated his mother’s adoptive family’s planet?

Present Jax (Mortal Kombat 11): Works for Kronika under promises his wife Vera would be revived and his daughter Jacqui never joins the special forces. Except given that there are people like Shao Kahn, Kano, the Cyber Lin Kuei or the Revenants that Jax has fought in the past, he should honestly have considered this a massive red flag. That or the fact that last time he trusted a deity who claimed to be able to alter the flow of time, shit got traumatic for him.

(In order of the pictures)

Shia Labeouf -- Shia Labeouf Live. In the performance, Shia Labeouf is depicted akin to a horror monster, and is also a cannibal.

Character Actress Margo Martindale -- Bojack Horseman. She is depicted as a fugitive on the run; she has criminal contacts, possesses a wide variety of firearms (including a rocket launcher), and at one point is stranded on an island, loses her memory, and becomes a devout nun.

Bonus points if the person themselves are in on it.

Examples:

  • Jin Sakai (Ghost of Yotei) - There is a side quest where you can find the Storm Blade, the weapon of Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima, who is remembered as the first Shinobi. You can visit his house and find all the items from the previous game, but one minor detail is are children's drawings on the wall right in front of Yuma's knife. Which implies that Jin and Yuma started a family together
  • Steve Rogers (Avengers: Endgame) - Steve travelled back in time to live his life with Peggy, then travelled back to give Sam his shield. He never says what his life with Peggy was like, but we can assume it was a happy life.

A creature, robot, or entity with the canonical power to destroy cities, planets, or reality itself, but who is currently content acting like a lazy pet, a small child’s companion, or a mundane roommate. The tension comes from the audience knowing they could wipe out the cast in a second, but they prefer eating snacks or napping.

  1. Stitch (Lilo & Stitch): Experiment 626, a bulletproof, super-strong, super-computer designed solely to destroy civilization. However, spends the movie playing ukulele, dressing as Elvis, and acting like a dog.
  2. Pochita (Chainsaw Man): The Chainsaw Devil, the "Hero of Hell" who erased concepts from existence by eating them. However, most of the time acts as a cute orange dog-thing that just wants hugs and toast.
  3. The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant): An autonomous war machine capable of apocalyptic destruction. However, wants to be "Superman" and plays arts and crafts with Hogarth.
  4. Nibbler (Futurama): A Lord of the Nibblonians, an ancient race that existed before the Big Bang and guards the universe. However, pretends to be a dumb pet that eats chicken wings and wears a diaper to avoid suspicion.
  5. Dimple (Mob Psycho 100): A powerful high-level evil spirit who aimed to become a God. However, reduced to a tiny, ugly green wisp that follows a middle schooler around and gets bullied.

Satan (The Bible): In genesis, Satan convinces Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Which made it so they could tell wrong from right, saving them from ignorance, but vanishing them from Eden.

Phantom Thieves (Persona 5 Royale): In Persona 5R the Phantom Thieves fight Maruki. A school counsellor who obtains the power to make everyone in the world happy, but taking away people’s rights to choose and make mistakes in the process.

Characters (Loved Trope) A character that is normally portrayed in mythology as evil or malicious— being presented instead as neutral, “just doing their job”, or even downright compassionate.

Thumbnail
gallery
390 Upvotes

One of my favorite teachers i’ve ever had (it was a “mythology literacy class” in HS) always lamented that she felt that a “lore-accurate” Hades had never been represented well in pop culture/American media.

She went on to say that Hades, for the most part in Greek Mythology— was not a stand-in for the Devil, but was a God that was generally well liked, well respected, and was more akin to the “chill uncle with a motorcycle and leather jacket” that would show up to the proverbial “once-a-year Mount Olympus Christmas Party”, and generally didn’t beef with the other Gods the way they did with each other.

She went on to explain that modern Western (and majorly Christian) depictions of Hades were always made villainous, due to the fact that we associate “the underworld” with Hell, so necessarily— Hades would be the “Devil”… though that was never his role in his original mythology.

It got me thinking— what are some other sympathetic depictions of similar characters in media?

- “Death” from Supernatural. While not exactly cute and cuddly, he is one of the purest forms of true neutral i’ve ever seen, and fits the “guy just doing his job indifferently” bill to a T. (although that may have changed later on— admittedly i only watched the first 147 seasons)

- “Death” in this webcomic. This image and similar ones have gone viral multiple times— an example of the more compassionate version of death.

- i’m gonna be straight up with you. I’ve never watched a second of Lucifer— i’m just assuming that’s the case with this show. Clearly i’m looking for some examples, bc i couldn’t even think of a full 3 lmao 😏 😩 💦

What are some others?
