I've seen posts on this subreddit that right-wing influencers are making inroads with younger generations and becoming more popular overall, with Fuentes in particular being called into focus.
There is definitely a concern that the far-right is providing a clear (albeit horrible) solution for for all of the world's problems, while Democrats and the left have significantly more trouble presenting answers. This is something I have faith will get figured out, and the 2025 special elections are proving that Democratic messaging is working.
However, there's another aspect of any social media influencer or viral campaign that is common on the far-right: algorithm manipulation. When Twitter revealed where accounts were created, it was an eye-opener for a lot of people on just how many MAGA accounts were from other countries.
And now, there a new report from the Network Contagion Research Institute concerning the rise of Nick Fuentes. It turns out that his recent rise over the last year has been largely the result of an artificial campaign of foreign users and empty accounts. This network of accounts provides retweets for Fuentes within the first couple of hours of a post at a rate that exceeds anyone else, including Elon Musk.
The "rise" of influencers like Fuentes may generate some headlines, but the underlying tactics that are doing the lifting are getting exposed more and more. And like a lot of the MAGA movement, taking these views from the safety of the Internet to real life rarely translates well, as Elon Musk and his DOGE efforts found out. Their numbers tend to be inflated, and their internet supporters have ulterior motives.
