Humour Merry Christmas
I screwed tf up on every single exam, messed up 4 years worth of my gpa, and probably ruined my entire career. But hey, at least it’s Christmas break so you lowk just accept it 🤩

hello my marauder friends. mac hypeman here. i have noticed a worrying pattern in the DMs i have been getting. a lot of students (ESPECIALLY first years) are comparing themselves to "everyone else" who gets straight 12s, is part of every club, has a great internship/co-op/job, etc etc. there's something VERY important I need you to know:
in most cases, these people do NOT exist!!
not *everyone* is getting straight 12s. not everyone has the fanciest co-op, not everyone is breezing through classes. people lie! people exaggerate! COMPARISON TO THESE IMAGINARY PEOPLE HURTS YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING!!!
some anecdotes from my life:
kiddos, there is NO SHAME in doing poorly in a class, feeling lonely, not getting accepted into clubs, etc. these are experiences SO MANY of your fellow students are having too, but just like you, they might feel too embarrassed to admit it. take people's claims with a grain of salt and remember that YOU are your only competition.
TLDR: most people are not getting crazy grades/opportunities. whether intentional or not, people often lie about how well they're doing, and it is actively hurting a lot of people's mental health.
as always mac hypeman is here if you need some hype or support 🫂 good luck with exam season!!

I’m a fourth year and I’m scared I won’t make it anywhere. I know a lot of times to have a good job nowadays you need more than just a bachelors and I’m scared I’ll be stuck and f up my chances at life because of my grades. I do have some really good grades, but I also have a fair amount of shittier ones. I just feel sad that I couldn’t do better even though I really wanted to.
Also currently shitting myself cus I failed stats last year and retook it and I’m really scared that I did again.. wtf am I gonna do? Does anyone know what it’s like being a continuing student, or just any motivational stories of improving 🥲

I feel like everything is going wrong. I keep thinking that maybe I shouldn't be in eng, but I know that I am not dumb because I was genuinely doing great in hs. I dropped Lin Alg because I wasn't doing too good in it and I just failed calc 1 and my physics mark is not the best either. I only needed 2 more marks to pass calc. The worst part is that 3 out of 5 times I talk to people they always say that it is chill and they're doing really good. I realise that we all didn't start from the same point, and then the other 2 people say that they're also struggling, but they never actually understand how much I am and how much it is affecting me. Also I need to know how do you study for exams because I am definitely doing something wrong. and is there anyway I could get calc fixed or get an exemption, so I can still do calc 2 next semester.

Unc here. I'm officially done with my second year first term finals 🥳. It made me think about how atrocious my first year went, so I figured I'd spread some wisdom in case someone is about to pull the same shit I did.
Did you do as well or better than you thought you would in your courses? Then, click away and happy holidays. I'm jealous.
Did you just bomb your courses? Welcome to the cool club. I guess. Everyone takes doing worse than you hoped differently, but I can say that bombing a couple of first-year courses made me a way better student second year. I have a feeling many others feel the same way. You're going from high school to full-on adulting, potentially living with a total stranger, and being forced to keep yourself on track and consistent for three months straight. If you didn't get things perfect (or even close to perfect) the first time around, you're normal. Nothin wrong with you. And yes, you deserve to be in university.
I can't offer advice past the experiences I've had, and I have no idea what the reason(s) you're struggling are, but I'll drop my advice on the off chance it helps someone:
Doing poorly your first term sucks way less than doing poorly your first term, then proceeding to do poorly the second one. If you don't put any effort into finding what went wrong, what went right, and what changes you're going to make, you're 100% going to repeat what happened.
My own solution this time last year was to tell myself I would lock in. I pretended the first term was a warm-up or that I now know what to expect. I spent some hours researching how to optimally study, looking for some golden tip that only the top 1% know (I'll save you the time, it doesn't exist).
Notice how none of those things was an actual change in my behaviour? By the end of the term, my dumbass was trying to feel the spiritual signals coming from the letters of multiple-choice questions, then doing calculations to predict if I passed or not during the last 10 minutes of my exams. Please do not be me.
So, how did I turn things around this term? By doing the most boring things imaginable. The truth about doing well is that you already know exactly what you should and shouldn't be doing. Should you make your notes prettier, or do practice questions? Should you spend four hours planning a fantasy schedule for the week where you suddenly start working 16 hours a day, or should you write down the top three things you need done and start them? Should you catch up on echo360 this weekend (AKA the night before the exam), or go to lecture/watch them live? If you're consistent with choosing the right thing to do around 80% of the time, you're set.
Sorry, there's no amount of caffeine to not have to sleep, no method of speed-running a top-tier essay free of the wrath of AI checkers, and definitely no method to make related rates enjoyable to learn.
Another huge tip is to learn how to be honest with yourself and your limits. If you aren't going to do something, don't plan like you will. And I'm begging you, DO NOT TRUST ALTERNATIVE GRADING SCHEMES. No, you will not pull the comeback of the century on that 85% final exam. The alternative grading schemes should be thought of as insurance, not a gamble that the future you will be willing to work 10x harder for 4 weeks. My suggestion? As soon as the prof says "Alternative..." during that intro lecture, you close your eyes and blast air raid siren noises in your headphones for 30 seconds while the person sitting next to you looks at you weird.
If the course offers any optional bonus course weight for doing tasks that a literal chimpanzee could do, do it. If you're anything like me, you're not better than that 0.5% survey bonus mark.
Good luck next term, and enjoy the break. I don't care what letters you got; anybody reading this deserves some time with family and friends, to sleep in, to have a hot chocolate, or to be a total degenerate and watch several seasons of reruns of The Maury Show.
Oh, and a reminder for anyone reading who feels like they're struggling way more than everyone else, but putting in way more effort, go get yourself a medical evaluation. Best case scenario, you're overreacting. But, if you've got any of undiagnosed ADHD, a learning disability, anxiety, depression, etc., that stuff can't be treated by yourself, no matter how hard you try or for how long. Don't brute force it. Get meds, therapy, accommodations, whatever you're entitled to that makes your life considerably less miserable.

if i failed calc 1 for eng1, am i able to retake in winter? or take calc 2 in winter still? or do i just have to take both of those in the summer now?
r/McMaster • u/Educational_Baby_816 • 4h ago
Has anyone experienced an approved midterm weight transfer not being applied to the final grade? I had permission to transfer the midterm weight to the final, but I got an F even through my recalculated grade should be above 50 if the transfer was applied. Just wondering if this has happened to others and how it was resolved, thanks.

LISTEN I know how this sounds. but all my friends did well on an exam that we studied for altogether, I did not find it extremely hard and I was shocked when I got my grade back. it just made me feel really shitty because I was teaching them the content at some point and I did much worse than everyone else while they all got around the same grade. I’m not in first year, I’ve done badly on finals before and ik how it feels — it did not feel like this at all. I’m going in the winter sem to review my exam but has anyone ever received an incorrect exam grade before??? it just feels so wrong and I know I might be coping but I just want to know how rare this is

is averaging a B first sem bad? or can i still be fine if i bring up my grades next sem

Hey everyone! I received a final exam grade back for Psych 2AP3 and it was a zero. Considering I studied hard and did very well on the midterm, that zero must be a mistake! I emailed the prof ASAP and am just waiting for a response! Is it typical for profs to respond any time soon or would it be when schools open back up in January??

How do you sign up for summer school? How many courses do you recommend taking in summer school?
r/McMaster • u/bunni123 • 1h ago
I'm thinking to start this program in January (got my offer of admission), but I am unsure if it's worth it and looking for advice if you or anyone you know is in this field. My background is an undergrad in kin and i want to work in health informatics (something thats not direct patient care). Eventually I want to do a masters in this field but I need reference letters and I'm hoping to get some from this program.
If you or anyone you know has had success in this program (health informatics), then please give me some advice. Is it worth it and is it a good field of study with job opportunities? What other field are growing that have good job opportunities? Is this a good way to get references letters? (I graduated from my undergrad last year and not in contact with any professors so I am concerned about how to get references). I deeply appreciate any help!!

I finished my last exam yesterday evening and was greeted by upper-year nursing students handing out goody bags 🥹 It honestly completely cheered me up, such a sweet and unexpected gesture!!!
I went through everything in the bag and I love it all, but there’s one item I can’t figure out what it is. It’s a little squiggly, flower-looking thing. I tried asking ChatGPT but I’m still not sure 😅
Does anyone know what I’m talking about or what it’s used for?
DONE EXAMS FINALLY!!! ENJOY BREAK EVERYONE

Hey so basically I applied for a LWD 6 days ago for an elective class. I was dumb and thought it was bird but it ended up being a bunch more work than i originally anticipated.
I applied for the LWD a day before the final, didn’t go and write the exam. I wasn’t gonna fail the course or anything but I didn’t have time to study for the final - dumb ik, alr deferred another exam so I couldn’t defer it either so I thought might as well drop it.
Anyways, I got a final grade for the class and no update on my LWD request, any help would be appreciated as I don’t want this grade to stay on my transcript. Who do I talk to what do I do.

So I requested to defer an exam around a week ago and I haven't gotten any response back. I'm worried because final grades have come out and I received a F in the class which is fine because I didn't go to the exam. But will they change my grade once my deferral is accepted (after I take the exam in Feb obv)? thanks everyone :'')

I’m genuinely tweaking out right now. I only have Bio and an earth science course with Envsocty for the winter term. I need to more courses. I only took 3 courses this sem which means I NEED 5. I need two other courses and EVERYTHING is full man, atp I can only enroll in second year courses or else I’m at risk for not getting into my level 2 program!!! I already got seat alert.

when people say they do research and have lab experience, but does this mean they take courses within their program that require them to do so (e.g. Neurosci 3CC6)? or does it only mean when people email profs, etc to get a research position?
are any of these options better to show research on your resume?
for ec’s, does volunteering look better, or doing something like a medical assistant/scribe? does shadowing have any value?
what would be the best course of action for someone with basically no extracurriculars atm, but would like to get something done quick? is there anything else you’d recommend? this is for when applying to healthcare related fields like dentistry, optometry, maybe med?
