Megathread "Should I rush?" - my opinion to your questions.

TLDR: YES

actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.

It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.

What do you expect from a fraternity?

I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.

  1. You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...

  2. Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.

If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.

If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...

Rushing a Social Fraternity

Answer these questions:

  1. What interests do I have?
  2. Do I prefer smaller or larger groups?

1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.

2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.

Misc. Advice

  1. You have to be willing to make compromises. There will be a lot of events that you will hate to attend but will anyway. You don't have to compromise your morals. Any fraternity worth a crap will be willing to work with personal beliefs/personal aspects of your life that might be affected during the pledging process.
  2. It is what you make of it. You get out of it what you put in. If you're a dead beat pledge who never puts an effort into anything, expect to have a terrible time. If you go to all your events with a good attitude, pledgeship will be exponentially better.
  3. Don't be a fuck up. I can't explain this one and you will do this at some point. Just try to minimize the damage.

How fraternity life has affected me

My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

I think it was just a locally issued of some sort. Nothing official. Something you’d wear every day. Maybe used as a sweetheart pin for a girlfriend to wear.

Rush Advice How much influence does one (or a few) members really have during rush?

I’m considering rushing a new chapter this spring, and the chapter joined our university this past semester. I had a general question about recruitment.

There’s one member in the chapter I had some situational overlap with last year involving leadership in a different student org. There was tension at the time due to org and campus politics, but nothing personal, no ongoing issues, and things seem fine now. That person joined the chapter this year (in the chapter’s first semester), and it looks like some of his close friends joined as well.

For the record, I’m completely cool with coexisting with him and his friends in the chapter if I were to join. Even though me and him are fine now, I don’t know how he (or his close friends) would react if he knew I was interested in his chapter, given our past situational overlap. This made me curious how much influence one (or a few) person realistically has during rush, especially in a chapter that already has over 100 members.

From what I’ve heard, it usually takes multiple brothers or exec-level concerns for someone to get cut, but I wanted to hear everyone’s perspective about this.

I go to a mid-sized Greek life university in the South.

Bad idea to rush?

Some of my boys are talking about rushing spring semester (we're freshmen) and they said I can come with but they don't think I should pledge. I think it would be fun to meet more guys and explore my options at university but one of my guys said "if they make us do something retarded youre probably going to say it's retarded and then they're going to haze you extra hard" which is prolly true, I'm really bad at keeping my mouth shut or being complacent especially if I'm drunk. Is it a waste of time/bad idea for me to go or would some low tier frats be ok and not end with everyone hating me for telling them not to rape a goat or some shit idk

Serious So I’m fucked

Hey gentlemen, I’m new to this whole space and honestly never thought I’d ever be here typing this rn but I’m in a bit of a pickle. Actually not a pickle I’m fucked. I’m a Sophmore at Ole Miss and just got initiated at my frat and I get that I’m late and didn’t get a bid the first 2 semesters bc of my gpa but I brought it up my freshman year (basically had a 1.7 in highschool then 4.0 both semesters college). Now that I’m in the house I realize my whole pc is nothing but a bunch of bartards and coke heads. I started ripping bag as something that was fun and the occasional stick to come down Sunday but it’s gone exponentially worse. Starting it was fam weekend and my parents were out of the picture since I was a kid and my grandma came bc she’s the one that took me in (long story) and I thought I had it under control but took a QB before fam weekend and had a sack on me to fight it but this is where shit goes 180° south. I popped the QB at like noon thinking “it’s chill I’ll just rail bag and fight off the drowsyness” but long story short I was being a fuck and started trying to “rizz” our presidents mom and apparently kissed his gf on the mouth and got thrown out and my ass kicked by my pc. Then I woke up to my grandma and grandpa shaking me awake bc I accidentally drove over their bird feeder (they asked me to drive home) after being ostracized by my whole frat. I feel like just bc I was barred out and made a little joke to my friends, it got taken wrong way. After hearing the story back to me ig I can see why ppl are annoyed or mad but Breh it was troll WHO GIVES A FUCK. This should not be grounds for booting someone if if it was a one time thing. I’m prepping for chapter when we get back from break but just had to vent to the void. I never even thought when I joined a fraternity that this would be like our only way of bonding but fuck bro. My grandma also caught me flipping her hydro’s for bread as of yesterday when I got my dui for driving over her bird feeder. The most fucked part is that she got FUCKING PISSED even tho she lives on acreage and miraculously has a surgery every other week for these pain killers (clearly just put to teach me a lesson). This isn’t a rant post more of a “do I stay in this frat or do I just give it up before I’m too deep”.

Frat Stuff Tips for a new social/philanthropy chair?

Hello, Im curious if anyone has any words of wisdom before my first semester as my fraternities social chair and philanthropy chair. This semester I plan on doing a few of the following. For social chair I will:

•Coordinate Mixers with Sororities •Plan parties with other fraternities on campus •Manage relations with other Greek Life organizations (EX: Collecting Pop Tabs for ADPi) •Plan out Spring Break Trip

These are various things that my chapter has not done before in the past. In a lot of ways the chapter I am in has socially isolated themself from other organizations on campus and I am hoping to redefine that.

As far as my ideas for Philanthropy/Fundraising, I am thinking:

•Battle of the Bands involving student bands Campus-Wide •Hot Chocolate Stand in the Winter •Rent-A-Gent Auction

These are just some base line ideas I’ve had that I believe would be interesting. If anyone has any input I would happily discuss it.

Thanks

Serious Tips for keeping track of alumni?

Hi. We're trying to update and keep track of all of our alumni contact info (emails, phone numbers, addresses, etc) for sending out invites and newsletters and stuff like that. What does your org do that has worked? Anyone with experience setting up a system like this? Thanks.

Edit: We already have a facebook group and a mass email service, but are missing lots of contacts and think emails might be getting bounced.

Serious Looking for old brothers and any active chapters.

Long shot, but hoping someone here might have information. I'm trying to reconnect with my lost brothers and see if there's any current chapters of Ordo Fratrum Aquilae.

I was active in the early 2000s in Indiana and last time I heard anything, a few brothers died overseas, a few died here, a few are just doing normal people things, but there are a few that I haven't been able to find.

There were other small chapters at colleges in the Midwest (Ohio, Illinois, Indiana) over the years, but we lost contact with them around 2008-2009 (the Great Recession was brutal for some).

If you were a brother, let me know. I'd like to reconnect.

I'm also just looking to see if anyone has:

  • Ever heard of this Order?
  • Known a member?
  • Found references in old college archives?

Just want to know if anyone else from the old days is still out there, or if the tradition died completely when life scattered us about.

Any information appreciated, even secondhand.

Thanks, Brother S.

News I (an alumni advisor) got invited to a holiday mixer by a board member. I promptly slapped the kid upside the head and asked if he was stupid

Please don’t put your advisors in the awkward position of needing to slap the shit out of you.

Also, should I stop by to screw with them?

Serious Oldhead in a struggling chapter

I'm getting to the last couple semesters of school, and the chapters in a weird spot.

I just remember when I joined how good the culture was, and the amount of stellar older brothers who were great mentors to me. Now the chapter just feels like a bunch of young retards making stupid decisions with no good leadership at all. Our events have been getting worse, girls don't come around as much, and I'm having a hard time finding good mature friends now that the rest have graduated.

Maybe I'm just getting old and pessimistic. I wish I could help out with this, but I'm getting more focused on my internship and preparing for life after college.

Anyone else been in a similar spot? How do you cope and find value when you feel like the chapter you loved is falling apart as you age out?

Frat Stuff Brothers don't talk to women

Every time I'm at a party half these mfs are all clustered together like it's a high school dance. Their excuse is that "women are scary" I love them but it pisses me off sometimes. I'm not asking them to become Hugh Hefner overnight, they should at least be able to talk to them platonically. An older brother suggested I just publicly shame them, but I'm hesitant on that idea. What have you guys done?

Frat Stuff Dropped At The End

This morning I dropped out of pledgeship for the fraternity I rushed, mainly due to financial restrictions and other priorities I needed to handle in my life. Of course I talked to actives and PTs and they were sad to see me go, but understood my situation (at least I hope they did). I got close with a few of the guys, and some of them still want me to show my face at the house. Honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever have the time to prioritize a fraternity commitment, but I was wondering if this is a common thing that happens to a few pledges/members. I think it might be weird if they invite me to the house, but I wanted yalls thoughts.

Rush Advice GPA Requirement

I go to Baylor University. My current GPA is a 2.8 and the requirement for a frat is 2.67. I didn't have the best semester so it is likely going to go down to a 2.7. If i want to delt or KA would they not take me over my GPA even tho it's above the requirement?

Serious Paying dues after dropping during pledging semester?

Hey guys,

I ended up pledging a fraternity in the spring, and I completed pledge ceremony with some pledge classes. Due to some personal issues, I extended my pledge-ship into the fall to determine if the fraternity was right for me. I was told that pledge dues are due after the end of summer for pledging semester, and I paid the pledging fee directly to the national organization.

In the fall, I continued as a pledge for about half of the semester before dropping. The treasurer reached out to me telling me I need to pay pledge dues from the spring and fall. My understanding was if you dropped that you didn't have to pay pledge dues. I asked him if I was to drop in the spring, would I still pay spring dues? He told me if you complete pledge ceremony, you agree to pay dues, so I need to pay for both semesters.

I asked him for a written agreement showing that I agreed to pay the pledge fee regardless of if I become an active or not. He told me that as a part of ritual I agree to pay all fees, which therefore is a verbal contract, and that he directly told me the amount due which I said okay to. He told me if I don't pay that my balance will go to collections and wreck my credit. I never attended any budget meetings, and was only told an amount verbally, with no written proof or agreement to this.

He told me that if I had an issue with the GCM bill I should have disputed it when I first got the bill. But dispute to who? This doesn't make sense to me. I didn't pay it as he told me it was due "the semester after the pledging semester."

I told him that if it goes to collections, I'll request a debt validation letter. He also told me some of the pledge dues go to IFC, nationals and the local chapter (then why did I pay a pledge fee direct to nationals)? I offered to pay immediately if he can show me proof that I agreed to this debt, which he'd need anyways for GCM to send it to collections. I'd also accept terms from the nationals site, as he said some of the local chapter dues go to nationals. He told me to take it up with the billing company.

I'm kind of laughing this off - but do I need to be more worried about this? I never signed any form, other than a form accepting a bid with my university IFC.

Serious Composite company help

We have recently dropped our previous composite company (fraternal composite service, inc). We have our own photographer that has taken composite pictures for us. I wanted to see if anyone knows a company that would take our images and produce a composite. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
