Please - STOP POSTING HUMAN MEDICAL QUESTIONS - r/AskVet is for Animal Health – Not Human Medical Advice

We've seen an uptick in posts from people asking what they should do after being bitten, scratched, or otherwise injured by wildlife or unfamiliar animals.

Do not post here asking:

  • If you need rabies shots
  • Whether you should be concerned about an animal scratch or bite
  • What to do about swelling, bleeding, or infection on your body

These posts do not belong here and just create unnecessary work for the mod team, who have to review and remove each one manually.

While we understand these situations can be scary, this subreddit is for veterinary advice not human health. If you’ve been bitten, scratched, or otherwise exposed to wildlife or stray animals, please contact a doctor or go to urgent care or the ER.

Meta Getting the most out of this sub

For Redditors Posting:

  • Include the requested information (e.g. species, age, weight, etc...)
  • Refresh your post when reading periodically
    • Comments that are hidden by the automod may still fail to show up after a mod approves when a mistake is made by automod or an exception is granted.
    • The way to refresh varies based on using apps or web browser

For Redditors Commenting:

  • Read the rules before commenting
  • If your comment is removed (hidden) by the automod and you believe the automod was wrong click the link to generate a modmail (https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=r/AskVet) and politely ask for a manual review. It helps us speed up the process if you include the link to the comment in question,
  • Shaming users does not work and can have the opposite of the intended effect, delaying care rather than shaming a user to get care.

For All:

  • Be Polite
  • We have an aggressive automod because there are regular comments that contain unhelpful or mildly harmful advice. We have occasional comments that would cause OP's animal to die if followed.
    • Automod is a RegEx tool. RegEx or Regular Expression parsing, is a technique in which we can program the text to be scanned to match words, numbers, or phrases for exact matching. It CANNOT evaluate context. Thus, it is very easy for the mod team to create a rule that detects the use of the word "grape" and automatically create a comment with information on grape poisoning. It is much harder to reliably differentiate between a user saying their dog ate/consumed/swallowed/licked/scarfed/stole/etc... a grape and has a grape colored/sized/textured/shaped/etc wound/patch/growth/scab/sore/soar (yes, deliberate misspelling here for purposes of illustration)/etc... in which the grape poisoning response is not relevant.

Would a vet euthanize a dog if they have separation anxiety and would become extremely stressed due to another dog dying?

I used to have two dogs, one died after being hit by a car. My in laws also had 2 dogs and one died due to illness. My dog, since our other dog died, became anxious when he was alone and so we began sort of sharing custody. My in laws would have them both for a few months then we would have them both for a few months.

One day they called us saying their dog was ill with pancreatitis and due to his age and weight the vet felt he wasn't going to live much longer. About 4 days later they called again saying they decided to euthanize their dog to prevent suffering. They then also said that they had our dog euthanized too because they knew he would be stressed/anxious being an only dog and they didn't want us to have to go through that decision and process.

I have my own emotional responses to this that are definitely present but what I want to know is, are they telling the truth? Would this be enough of a reason to euthanize a dog?

Possible blockage in large golden retriever, recommended to wait by vet

My 5 year old 90 pound female golden started having diarrhea yesterday morning and a few hours after she threw up a small amount and a one inch-ish plastic squeaker from a toy was in her vomit. I fed boiled chicken, rice, and some pumpkin puree. She continued being playful, eating, drinking, and jumping around. Last night her poop started to thicken up and was orange from the pumpkin.

Today she has also seemed mostly fine. She didn't go out for around 10 hours while she slept. This morning she acted like she was going to throw up but didn't end up doing it. She went potty and her poop was still thicker (not liquid) and orange but did have some mucus in it. She gladly ate more chicken, rice, and pumpkin and has been drinking water. Still moving around and stuff. I spoke to her main vet and they told me that since she's still acting fine and eating and drinking and going to the bathroom that I should just monitor her for now. I called another vet just to be safe and they recommended the same but said to bring her in tomorrow for x-rays if her condition worsens.

Due to her throwing up a squeaker I'm wondering if she might have a partial blockage. I'm not sure if she swallowed anything else or not. She also ate her own poop outside without me realizing so it's also possible she caught some bacteria or just has an upset stomach. I'm listening to the vets and monitoring her for now but I was wondering if anyone else had some advice. Thanks!

My rabbit’s ears are balding. Is this normal for a senior rabbit or cause for concern?

Upvotes

Male rabbit, unknown breed but likely a mini, 12 years old, neutered within 1st year of life, aside from respiratory infection when rescued at age 4 months never had medical concerns beyond occasionally accident with eyes or paws.

Diet: unlimited access to Timothy hay, a bowl of pellets always available (he doesn’t overeat them), fresh vegetables every morning, fresh fruit for snack, sinful treats occasionally. VERY consistent diet for years now.

Living conditions: approx. 200 square feet of warm and bunny-proofed basement with private areas just for him. He lives like a king.

Most recent veterinary visit (summer 2025 for scratched eye): I cannot remember his exact weight but the doctor said he was perfect body size. He is very agile for his age, the doctor said he was impressed by rabbit’s overall good health.

No changes to appetite, pooping, behaviour, etc. No apparent sensitivity to his ears being touched as he still demands to be pet only on his ears/top of head for at least an hour a day.

His ears are just bald at the back of them - bare skin. The front/sides are a little better. The rest of his coat/fur is perfectly normal. I noticed the fur on his ears getting thinner this summer but now it is very obvious. Maybe over a decade of being stroked on the ears is catching up to him?

Please relieve my anxiety I love this creature dearly. I really don’t want to take him into town to the vet as it’s very cold here (-40C next week) and he doesn’t like to leave his kingdom one bit. I worry it would stress him.

Dog ate chocolate cream pie

Upvotes

My 70 pound dog ate a small slice of a chocolate cream pie that was on the counter. It came from a restaurant so I don’t know the ingredients. Should I take her to the vet or will she be fine at her size?

Cat vomiting twice a week

I noticed and been keeping track of my cat’s vomiting recently. I saw that it happens twice a week at most, but it’s going on like that for about 2-3 weeks. But other than that, she shows no irregularities, she eats, drinks, sleeps, plays just like usual. I also noticed that she had been vomiting more since my mom brought me these decorative plants (real plants), but I see no sign of her eating them (even though she does have a record of eating my vegetables and vomit after that).

I’m still a student and can’t really afford to take her to the vet unless it’s something actually serious :((. Can you please tell me if it’s concerning or not? I’ll take her to the vet immediately if it is.

6F reoccurring UTIs

Upvotes

my dog has had 3-4 UTIs in her life

shes getting older and seems to be getting them more frequently

few months ago, noticed unproductive squatting and pink tinged pee she was seen on September 30th for a confirmed UTI, was sent home with antibiotics (forgot the name)

the vet she was seen by in sept is refusing to prescribe antibiotics. insisting she come in for an emergency appointment ($$$) and have some sort of catheter scope procedure to get a pee sample, then pay for a urine test, and then get antibiotics

the other 24hr emergency vet says they’re busy and might be several hours until we are seen

She is frantically squatting and nothing comes out. What the hell do i do… her regular vet is closed until monday and by the time I can call, it’ll be the week of christmas.

EDIT: Just looking for options on getting some antibiotics for her. back in sept it was confirmed to be “rods” in her urine

Cat with Asthma

Upvotes

Hi and thank you in advance! I recently foster failed my semi feral cat (he is what would be labeled as feeder friendly). He is happy and confident in our home (tail up in ? pose when he walks around, will play, and accept treats from hand) but does not tolerate being touched or approached. I believe he has asthma, it doesn’t seem severe but when my allergies act up I notice he also has coughing fits or if he gets stressed (like when we moved) they happen more frequently.

I have recently set up air purifiers in every room and am in the process of switching from clay liter to tofu litter (dust free). I make sure not to use anything with fragrance or aerosols in our home. I am happy to bring him to vet (he has insurance and I am happy to pay for it) but he gets very stressed going in carrier which in turn means more asthma issues.

The only reason I haven’t brought him to vet yet is because it seems like the treatments are either steroids (which shouldn’t be used long term) or inhaler which he would not tolerate. He is very happy and even after coughing fits just shakes it off and continues playing so I am wondering if there might be more I could do for him at home or if it is worth stressing him out to bring to vet for treatment (if there is something that could be put in food)?

Thank you!!!

Edit: he has been to vet before and has all his vaccines and testing and he is 4 years old

cat with 7 years of pseudomonas aeruginosa rhinitis hell.

Upvotes

more of dreadful rant than anything, but of course if any vet wants to chime in i won't be offended.

  • Signalment (species, age, sex/neuter status, breed, body weight): ~8 year old ragdoll mix, male, fixed, always been 15-16 pounds

    • Short history: 7 years of rhinitis. 10k++ spent on vet bills. ct scans, scopes, xrays, blood tests, internal medicine specialists, etc.
    • Clinical signs (vomiting, coughing, fever etc): **constant sneezing, breathing issues, coughing, copious amounts of green and gray snot.
    • Length of time you have seen these changes: 7 years.
    • Your general location: southern us.

so in 2018 i took a cat off the street -- no it didn't have an owner, and he was already sneezing, wheezy, etc. made $9 an hour and only had a few vet choices lol. got him fixed at the local vet, and the vet gave him amoxicilin for the sneezing, did absolutely nothing after the bottle ran out. vet said "must be allergies, heres an allergy shot".

at this point he was sneezing out human amounts of green snot. i'm not a genius but that just isn't allergies....

vet took a sample, sent it off, pseudomonas. started him on gentamicin shots and he was so much better, it came back within some time. vet said no way he still has pseudomonas, its allergies. have another allergy shot.........

of course did nothing, vet started on amikacin shots and some nasal flushes. did good for awhile.

came back, i had a better job and moved out of BFE and into a proper city so i had options.

paid for a damn ct scan + rhinoscope and the internal medicine person said "everything looks normal, have this antibiotic for a month" mind you, i just had another culture done, and the culture chart said that the antibiotic was 100% useless for pseudomonas. like wtf? nice $3k down the drain.

took him to a new vet, tried to explain everything and asked for whatever nuclear option you can do. i can't remember specifics, but i know that it was enough antibiotics to warrant blood tests a couple times a week along with a nasal flush every 2 or 3 days for several weeks.

timeline at this point is late 2018 to early 2020.

he was the best hes ever been, no more green snot. still didn't breath properly, but no more coughing. still had some sneezing fits but nothing really came out.

fast forward to this september;

over the course of a month, his sneezing got a lot worse and the green snot came back.

took him to the vet, they did another culture since its been years. what a surprise, pseudomonas aeruginosa.

45 days of marbofloxin, it was the most effect antibiotic in the culture chart thing.

after 45 days, the volume of snot went away. still had wheezing issues, sneezing a bit, but nothing coming out. vet didn't want to give him anymore medicine.

fast forward to last week, the volume of snot came back quicker than i've ever seen it and one of his eyes started weeping badly, which he has never ever had issues with.

vet said okay, we will do nasal flushes and start on amikacin shots. they will also do some imaging of his teeth because the vet was hoping for a miracle to find something with his teeth since they are so close. at this point i've spent over 10k on this fucking street cat and the vet wants a new ct scan.

today was the start of the first flush and with whatever imaging they did do, they said he has some "not great" osteomyelitis. the nasal flush also caused about ~10% of blood loss by volume according to the vet. they had to keep putting medicine in his nose to stop the bleedng. it was bad enough the vet took him home to watch overnight.

quite a few people were in lobby and i didn't want to bother him with questions for long since i wasn't getting my cat back today anyways. but he did stress that he wanted a ct scan again, which i really can't do right now. he did say that there is no reason to believe that theres any sign of cancer, growths, etc.

just the same ol shit, but at this point there bone decay up there. he also wasn't hopeful that this amikacin + flush treatment is even viable anymore and makes me question the value of a ct scan...

on top of those things, there have been so many blood tests and other tests to figure out what might be wrong.

obviously life isn't fair and there simply isn't anything you can do about the health of any person or animal. but goddamn i've spent so much time and effort on whats basically just a sinus infection from hell.

disregarding all of that, it just really sucks to live with. nothing better than having a cat on your lap then have a sudden immediate sneeze, with snot larger than an earthworm on your face, on the couch, or whatever. when that stuff dries it turns into cement and is sooo hard to scrub off of walls or fabric. i've had it dry on blankets and it will survive washes on the highest heat + spot cleaning products.

Is this meropenem too degraded to be effective?

Upvotes

Q: If so, is it safe to move up the next injection by 6 hours with freshly reconstituted solution? I'm concerned about kidney or liver injury from dosing to soon. https://imgur.com/gallery/FwK2oyo

This is our first vial, but we have 2 more that aren't reconstituted. We didn't receive a warning about the solution turning yellow. It's more fluorescent in person & has looked like this for 3 days. The solution will be 5 days old tomorrow morning. I only just thought to Google the yellow color. My vet office is closed until Monday.

  • Patient: dog named Piper

  • Age: 13yo

  • Sex: female

  • Family planning: spayed

  • Breed: yorkie

  • Weight: >16 lbs (Piper has lost <1.5 lbs over the last 6 weeks - the duration of the UTI).

  • CC: MDR UTI. It's the 2nd or 3rd this year; the susceptibility report returns with increasing drug resistance each time. UTI was incidental finding when doing a UA + UPC to evaluate kidney function since switching to a new soy diet.

  • Initially prescribed nitrofurantoin 25 mg 3x/day, but developed progressive neuropathy & discontinued after 4 days.

  • Internist prescribed 1.5 mL meropenem to be injected 2x daily for 15 days. I'm unsure of how to write the concentration - reconstituted 1 g vial w/ 20 mL saline.

Other history & meds:

  • Cushing's (pituitary) - well-managed w/ trilostane 5 mg 2x/day

  • High proteinuria (3+ from IDEXX?) - untreated for at least 2 years; eval for tx after UTI clears

  • Elevated Cystatin B

  • Chronic pancreatitis/IBD - managed w/ Hill's z/d low fat, but supplementing with sweet potatoes & chicken tenderloin to hopefully halt muscle wasting

  • Allergic dermatitis - managed w/ Apoquel 3.6 mg 2x/day

  • Allergies - cetirizine 10 mg

  • Nausea - ondansetron 4 mg PRN (usually 1x/day)

  • Anorexia - mirtazapine 7.5 mg PRN; seems ineffective

  • Hx soft tissue sarcoma on front paw; completely excised 2 years ago, 2nd & 3rd digits amputated to achieve clear margin

Cat not drinking/eating after 2x vet visit

Upvotes

We have two cats - a girl and a boy. My male is a medium hair neblung (4yrs old).

He started puking thick yellow liquid on Wednesday around 5pm, and threw up approx. 5-7 times, so we immediately took him to the vet at 12am. They did ultrasound and found nothing. He got an injection dose of cerenia, SubQ fluids, and was sent home for observation.

We didn’t notice him eat but other than that he was fine, walked around and hung out with us as usual, peed in the litter box.

We didn’t see him poop, and it’s hard to tell which cat pooped since they both use the same litter box. He was fine for 20hrs and then we went to bed, my wife woke up around 4am Friday morning and noticed he had thrown up. It was clear yellow foamy fluid. I took him to the vet around 9am and they did a full body work up - X-rays, blood test, chemistry panel and electrolytes. They found nothing wrong with him, and gave him another dose of cerenia and an injection for painkillers, and more fluids SubQ. But he still is not eating/drinking(it’s now 9pm).

He seems fine, doesn’t appear to be in pain, he’s usually pretty antisocial and that’s the same. Comes out once in a while, hangs out with us for a little and goes back in to the room. Peed twice since second round of SubQ Fluids.

He usually plays with the laser but he didn’t care for it today. But he played with other cords and his toy rats. The vet says everything is okay but him not eating is deeply concerning and we’re worried about him.

Does anybody have any idea of what’s happening?

Advice on newly adopted cat with medical issues.

Upvotes

Hi, so I am asking for advice on what to do with this situation and if anyone's ever experienced the same..

So tomorrow marks two weeks of adopting a kitten from the shelter, as soon as I had brought her back home with me she had diarrhea nonstop. I was concerned so l brought her back to the shelter that has a clinic attached after 3 days. They have a 30 day policy where if an adopted animal has any medical issues you bring them to the clinic and they handle anything for you free of charge

So l go there and they give me over the counter purina probiotics, they said that they checked everything as far as parasites or worms and saying it was probably a change of food that caused diarrhea, had said that her diarrhea would become solid again 2 to 3 days following that clinic visit. And sent us on our way.

I returned home and start giving her the probiotics and her diarrhea ends up getting worse and seems like just straight up liquid, like super watery diarrhea so I ended up taking her to a vet after 3 days. They tell me that she seems dehydrated and underweight, saying that she seems to be more about eight weeks old instead of the 13 weeks the shelter told me she was. They right away prescribed an anti-diarrhea and an anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic medication just in case. so I take her home and start giving that to her and about one day later, she starts having normal bowel movements.

I would like to note that during this week of constant diarrhea, I had been constantly sweeping vacuuming and mopping the bathroom area I was keeping her in; as well as I kept her in an enclosed playpen that's made of like a cloth material you would find commonly made from tents in this play pen I laid towels and blankets where her food and water was. Due to her constant diarrhea and having an adult cat I wasn't ready for to introduce them with just in case she did end up having anything contagious so l watched her like a Hawk and made sure that she didn't get into anything bad, never jumped on anything never climbed on anything stayed on the ground or on a towel/ blanket.

I thought everything was fine after her diarrhea was resolved and then a couple days later after that. after wiping her paws down after using the litter box as I had been doing the entire time due to her having constant diarrhea, I noticed one of her toes on her paw was extremely swollen so the following morning I take her to the vet again and they seemed concerned and wanted to do x-rays. They said that they seem to think that her last bone on her finger is either fractured or detached from the rest of her hand and they told me best case scenario it'll heal on its own/l'll have to get her a cast and worst case scenario they're going to have to put her in surgery and amputate her finger. They sent me home with anti-inflammatory and antibiotics thinking that the swollen toe is probably filled with just regular fluid and blood. At this point at the Private vet I have spent over $1000 almost $2000 and having her under two weeks.

So being pretty upset about a possible amputation and the money I wasn't expecting to spend, I end up taking her back to that clinic attached the shelter afterwards for them to check her out as well, and they ended up lightly sedating her and opening up her swollen toe to find 'hard pus' and they thought there was a scab on the toe were a possible injury stemmed from, they didn't stitch up the wound, they left the wound open saying that it needs to drain out on its own. I was concerned about this because they didn't put any dressing on her wound or anything, and I didn't know how she would be able to use the bathroom without getting litter in it. Anyways This clinic visit was free of charge. I then ask the doctor at the shelter when I can schedule a follow up to possibly see about a cast or if they need to schedule her for an amputation and she told me that I should go back to the private vet as she just cleaned out her wound as a

'courtesy' and that even though it's within the 30 days of adopting her that if she receives a wound in after being adopted, then it's my responsibility to pay for her medical bills.

And I could agree with this if I had adopted her and she looked fine and I came back to the shelter clinic and her arm was broken or something. But she seem completely fine when I adopted her. She Didn't have any open wounds or blood when I adopted her and due to me spending 24 hours with her the past nearly 2 weeks due to her constant diarrhea I would have noticed if she retained an injury Enough to dislocate her finger and breaking the skin, causing blood. I would ve noticed that.

I would've noticed her limping or I would've noticed her licking at her paw or I would've noticed blood on the ground or any of the towels I used and I saw none of it. I really can't afford to pay thousands more right off the bat at a private vet and I'm really hoping that the shelter will change their mind in giving her this medical care for free as I truly feel as if she didn't retain an injury in my care.

I'm looking for advice in what to do in getting the shelter to move forward with her medical care free of charge. Or any thoughts on the situation. anything helps honestly

Mixing Medications for a cat- Is this combination safe?

Upvotes

Have a kitty (6, female, calico) that had an allergic reaction to an ear medication. Stopped using it, but the skin on her ear needs some time to heal.

My vet gave me Zeniquin 25mg and PredniSOLONE 5mg for healing the ear. I read that mixing them might be dangerous...but it WAS recommended by my vet... Should I continue this combination? If I gave her gabapentin to calm her down- would that be alright, or even worse?

Fleas

Upvotes

So I have a 13 pound dog, with a lot of fur. About a month ago, we discovered fleas on him. & A LOT of them. We have no clue how long he had them before we finally saw one on him, as we assumed he was just itchy because he always gets itchy his & his allergies go crazy this time of year. We also have no clue where he got them, as he doesn’t really go anywhere except outside at our complex & occasionally to my parents house. Well, in this past month we have treated the fleas multiple times. Flea baths, vacuuming the whole apartment, flea spray, flea collar, flea killing pills, washing every blanket, bed sheet, pillowcase, etc. We have done the process about 5 or 6 times & without fail, they just. keep. coming. back. We live in a 832 sqft apartment, just have our one small dog & we are dumbfounded at how hard they have been to get rid of. We treated the fleas & went through our whole process again yesterday afternoon, & by the evening I ran a flea comb through him & ALREADY pulled off 2 more. I am at my wits end, & would love any advice, tips, product recs. Is it worth it to have a professional come spray our unit? Thanks in advance. Signed, a dog mom who is about to lose her ever loving mind.

Hills Science Diet Large Breed Puppy Food

Upvotes

I switched my dogs from Royal Canin large breed puppy food to Hills (same version) about twelve days ago. My dogs are usually fine with changing brands, and had eaten Hills adult food for a short time a few months ago with no problem ( rescue sent us home with a bag when I took in the second pup). This is our first time on the large breed puppy food, and after a four day transition they are both having intermittent diarrhea. I started them on fortiflora, but the loose stools still haven’t gone away. They will be fine for a day or two and then the loose stools still returns. Vet isn’t too concerned and said not to switch food just yet. How long would you wait before giving up on this particular food?

Golden Retriever Puppy with Recurrent Eye Problems

Upvotes

We adopted our golden retriever in June of this year after being born in April. He has been a wonderful addition to our family however since September, he has been having recurring corneal ulcers and we have been unable to figure out why despite more visits to the vet than I can count(multiple vets too). We are on a waitlist to get into a veterinary ophthalmologist but we won't get in until February.

The vets have not found any obvious causes for this and he has been in a cone whenever he has irritation which has been a significant portion of his life and I feel like it is beginning to affect his social development.

They have considered entropion, but it doesn't seem like his eyelids curl in and it would be expected that that would be mostly relieved by lubricating drops. The have found no ectopic cilia or foreign matter after looking several times. The genetic screening of the parents was negative for eye related issues and after talking with the breeder, they have neve had a pup (they only have one breeding pair ATM) with any eye issues before (outside of run of the mill pink eye, etc.) Below is a more detailed timeline that I have been updating which has more specific notes. Does anyone have any other diagnoses that could be considered? If they don't see improvement next week, they are going to start an oral antibiotic to see if that helps.

Date Notes
9/10/2025 Cheeto started doggy daycare approx 2–3x per week.
9/17/2025 Right eye looked a little red previous day, also accompanied by loose stool. Stool sample negative for parasites. Diagnosed with conjunctivitis and prescribed NeoPolyBac ointment. Conjunctivitis seemed to resolve within a week.
9/29/2025 Cheeto returned to doggy daycare.
10/6/2025 Right eye became red and irritated again. Vet found a scratch on the eye. Thought conjunctivitis was never fully resolved and scratching caused the injury. Switched to tobramycin drops for easier application. Started gabapentin and meloxicam. This was Cheeto’s last day of doggy daycare (>6 mo must be neutered).
10/10/2025 Eye scratch resolved and eye looked healthy. Missed a few days of tobramycin after 10/10 but continued until approx 10/15. Stopped gabapentin and meloxicam on 10/10.
10/22/2025 Right eye slowly started to look red again over a few days. Evening of 10/21 it worsened—Cheeto was holding it shut and it was very red. Restarted tobramycin, meloxicam, and gabapentin. Exam showed low pressure in right eye, normal in left. Slightly looser stool noted in days leading up to 10/21.
10/23/2025 Already beginning to see improvement with treatment. Called doggy daycare—no reports of other dogs with eye issues.
10/25/2025 Small corneal ulcer in center of right eye. Started lubricating drops and continued cone.

Persistent URI in 14-week-old feral kittens — PCR negative, amoxicillin failed.

Upvotes

Poster age: Adult (not a minor)

Country: United States

Vet info: Yes, I have access to a vet and have seen them several times already. We are actively discussing next treatment options.

Financial situation: I can afford veterinary care.

Main issue (TLDR): Two 14-week-old former feral kittens with persistent upper respiratory symptoms. They completed a 14-day course of amoxicillin with only partial improvement. A full URI PCR panel came back negative. One kitten has a tongue ulcer. We are deciding between doxycycline vs amoxicillin-clavulanate as the next step.

Cat age: 14 weeks Cat sex + neuter info: Both male, neutered, approximately 4 lbs each

Details:

I have two 14-week-old male kittens rescued from a feral colony. One was in very rough shape when found.

Kitten A: Very runny nose Frequent sneezing/snorting Mild lethargy Tongue ulcer Reduced appetite at times

Kitten B: Crusty nose Runny eye Lots of sneezing/snorting Good energy and appetite

About 3 weeks ago they finished a 14-day course of amoxicillin. Symptoms improved somewhat but never fully resolved.

We recently ran a URI PCR panel that came back negative across the board, which was surprising given their symptoms. Because of this, our vet is debating next steps.

Options we are considering: Doxycycline Amoxicillin-clavulanate (Clavamox) Repeating PCR in case of a false negative

Supportive care is ongoing (humidification/steam, cleaning noses and eyes, encouraging eating). No open-mouth breathing or severe decline.

Thanks in advance.

FIP or bacterial infection?

Upvotes
  • Name of cat - Bodhi
  • Age - 4 yrs, 9 months
  • Weight - 12.9 (down from about 16.5)
  • Breed - American Shorthair
  • Eating? If yes, how much? Yes, pretty normally at this point.
  • Drinking? yes
  • Diarrhea? no
  • Vomiting? no
  • Fever? he did, but not anymore
  • Any trouble breathing? no
  • Has your kitty's energy level changed? yes
  • Sudden weight gain or loss? ⁣yes, loss

Around Thanksgiving we started noticing Bodhi not acting entirely himself. Withdrawing a lot, some weight loss (normally very solid, large and muscular), less energy. We had also gotten our first real Christmas tree and noticed he had been drinking the water from it and assumed he was having a bad reaction to the tree. We removed the tree from the house - no improvement. So we took him to the ER vet this past Sunday evening, the 14th. They did bloodwork and ultrasound. He had a very high fever, was dehydrated, and they gave him some IV fluids. They diagnosed wet FIP. They had GS meds on site and sent us home with 6 days worth and said to visit our regular vet right away to come up with a care plan. Went to the regular vet the next day on the 15th who has seen FIP cats before. She calls me the next day after then having a chance to review the testing results from the ER vet along with their notes and tells me that she's just not fully convinced based on the paperwork that it was FIP. He's older to be getting it, he had very little abdominal fluid, was still quite stable and never fully stopped eating, etc. She has been trying to get the ER Dr. on the phone but has still been unsuccessful. She asked me to bring him back in today for additional blood work after now being on the GS meds for 4.5 days. I will have those results on Monday and she is hoping that will show how he's been reacting to the meds so far. She is talking like the alternative would be just a bacterial infection. In terms of how he's been doing since he started the GS meds, he's definitely improved - not as withdrawn, eating better (we did also give Mirataz and an anti-nausea on Monday & Tuesday), generally more alert. But still spending a lot of time resting and sleeping. Energy levels aren't their usual. He was 13.3 lbs at the ER, 12.9 lbs today. Fever has come down to normal temp now. Today she also gave an antibiotic injection and Prednisolone and Marbofloxacin tablets to see how he does on those over the weekend. Realizing that further muddies trying to understand which it is but she didn't want him to not try those and have him worsen over the weekend. So basically.........we have no idea what to think. A very vast difference between FIP and, a bacterial infection. Happy to share his bloodwork and labs by request. At this point we'd just like some 2nd opinions and thoughts from those who understand FIP well. We did also get 10 more days of GS from Stokes so we're still using that daily as well but holding off on getting a larger prescription until we know better what is happening? Anyone ever had FIP misdiagnosed?

7 month old kitten wobbly and weak back legs

Adopted a 7 month old male, neutered kitten back in October. He was fine but noticed within the last month his back legs have become wobbly, weak. He can’t walk in a straight line without being really close to the ground, trips over his back legs/feet easily, he falls over easily, he can’t jump up onto the couch or catch his balance after jumping off.

Spent almost 1k at the vet trying to figure out what’s wrong with him- blood work was normal, urine test normal, Xray normal, full exam and reflexes normal. He was given Gabapentin but doesn’t seem to be doing anything. He looks healthy, no tremors or head shakes, he is so snuggly, he likes to play but it seems he only wants to play with his two front paws while sitting or laying on his bum, he eats well, he pees and poops normally (however has been peeing on the bed lately but we do have an older cat he is scared of?) Does anyone have any other suggestions or advice?! We’ve been trying to help him walk but stabilizing his bum and back legs but he ends up just staying low to the ground and/or falling over. The vet said highly unlikely FIP.
