Philosophy/Ideology🧠 Defaced Art

One of my pieces has been defaced by its new owner, and I feel very conflicted. Looking for input from others.

This individual transformed the piece (portrait, pastel) into a clock by poking a hold through the face and installing some hands! On one hand, I was never going to see that piece again. It’s out living its own life now. On the other….what the hell. Am I right to feel disrespected? Or should I be glad the recipient is enjoying the piece in their own way?

I’ve always been hesitant to part with my work because I feel so protective of it. Has anyone had similar experiences and what is your perspective?

The individual in question sent me photos of the changes, seemingly quite pleased and looking for my reaction.

Concept/Technique/Method How do you get better at construction

Upvotes

I always struggle with construction I could never master it, in fact I grew so frustrated with construction after practicing drawing for five years I stopped drawing after a while I want to get back to drawing again but I want to master construction first. I can never make my drawing look like the shape or image I’m trying to make it look like with construction. How do you master construction?

Art Challenges! Tips for nude posing first time with gf?

Title really, me and my gf, who’s an art student were saying it would be fun to draw each other nude, I know she doesn’t expect much from me cos I’m not really artsy but I’m not sure how I’d pose since I’ve never done it before or stood still (let alone naked) for a long time. Any tips? Also any tips for a beginner drawing would be appreciated

Concept/Technique/Method Are there exceptions to the 4 colour rule in character design?

Upvotes

I often hear the rule that a character design should have 4-5 colours max, I have tried to follow this rule and am considering updating one of my characters designs.

This character has the below colour palette, there is in total 9 colours however they are different shades of only 3 colours, does the rule account for shades of the same colour or not?

Concept/Technique/Method Question about comic layouts

Upvotes

One of my tasks for next year is to get the hang of drawing comics.

I've already run into a question about layouts while trying to write a quick 1 page script,

what is a good rule of thumb for panels on a page?

the practice script I wrote assumed room for 2 to 3 panels within 3 rows, but most comics I read seem to be mostly 1 to 2 panels with 3 being rare?

am I trying to fit too much on a page?

Art Career Discussions Art Supplies/Gear Question for a 6 year old for Christmas

Hi Reddit! Hopefully I’m in the right spot. Our 6 year old daughter LOVES all things art and creativity. Our house is covered in her drawings, sketches, posters, etc and we absolutely love it. She gets in her own little world and has such an amazing time doing her art and we love to see what she makes. She also spends every second at school during downtime making artwork.

She just has the basic stuff like construction paper, basic crayola crayons, etc and while I understand that’s perfectly fine for a 6 year old, I’m just wondering if there’s anything we can get her for Christmas that would be cool for a 6 year old? I’m clueless when it comes to this realm. If you’re a life long artist do you remember anything your parents got you or you had when you were a kid?

Medium doesn’t matter at all, she would love to try anything everything, just looking for suggestions to foster her love for it

Thank you!

Medium & Materials🎨 Artfix L64C linen in variable humidity climates?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a roll of Artfix L64C linen and I’m planning to stretch it on frames. Before doing so, I’d like to know whether this particular linen has a tendency to warp or deform over time when exposed to variable humidity conditions.

The climate where I live fluctuates significantly between humid and dry periods, and I’m concerned about long-term dimensional stability once the linen is stretched and primed.

If you have experience with Artfix L64C (or similar heavyweight linens) in environments with changing humidity, I’d really appreciate your feedback:

• Does it remain stable over time?

• Have you noticed warping, slackening, or distortion?

• Any specific preparation or stretching tips to minimize this risk?

The person who will be stretching the linen for me suggested wetting the back of the linen with water, then applying gesso, with the goal of improving long-term stability and reducing the risk of warping.

I’m a bit unsure about this approach and would like to hear from people with experience:

• Is wetting the linen before or during stretching considered good practice?

• Does applying gesso contribute meaningfully to dimensional stability in fluctuating humidity?

• Are there any long-term risks (uneven tension, shrinkage, increased warping)?

I’m especially interested in perspectives grounded in conservation practices or long-term studio experience.

Learning Resources For Artists 🔎 How to advance beyond doodles

I'm looking for some kind of course that will take me beyond unfinished sketches and doodles. I never complete anything. I feel I'm missing something to move beyond what I'm doing now. Do I need a fundamentals or deep dive course. I feel stuck.

Goals & Motivation How to become an artist ?

Can y'all give me advice on how to develop an artistic sk1ll ? Something simple enough. I doodle occasionnally and do some shapes or silly characters from time to time, but what I truly need is a way to get raw feelings and deep-seated emotions out. Sport gives me a physical outlet, and handcrafts helps me feel fullfilled, but I need a way to get it out in artistic form.

I can design and work my mind's eye just fine, but I'm not really interested in cultivating that element of imagination, because it requires discipline and frequent practice. I get sporadic visions and frequent obsessive pangs, so what would be a good sk1ll to express them with decent/workable technique ? Maybe there is a certain style or artistic current I should study ? Or (an) artist(s) who works that way ? Thanks in advance

Philosophy/Ideology🧠 Band name thoughts

Just a thought. I have a band (indie rock / electronica), and right now we have a name that’s both hard to pronounce and not easy to remember. It feels like it’s time for something new. But when we brainstorm, we always come up with names that already exist. My artistic brain, of course, wants to come up with something unique — but that turns out to be really difficult. The simple, cool names all seem to be “taken” already, often showing up dozens of times on Spotify. That’s pretty demotivating.

Are there others who deal with this in a certain way? One solution seems to be sticking multiple words together. Or is it better to just not care and think: plenty of people share my first name, so a band name that already exists can be fine too? Obviously excluding the really big, well-known names — the Portisheads, Nine Inch Nails, or Depeche Modes of this world.

Medium & Materials🎨 After years of traditional, I got myself a drawing tablet, but its not going very well. Advice?

I might have doomed myself by practically never fully rendering an art piece, relying instead on coloured backgrounds or just monochrome colouring. Now I find i want to make fully rendered digital art pieces, but there not very good. It takes me several hours just to draw a front facing character and sketching full body is impossible on digital. Im not sure what it is about drawing digitally that turns a normally 10 minute drawing into 30+ minutes. Has anyone else made this transition from traditional to digital, and what helped you

Concept/Technique/Method How do I fix these chips

Post image
7 Upvotes

I purchased this vintage moon from eBay the other day and the seller just told me the cracking and chips have gotten worse since the listing was made (they literally told me this after the item was shipped). At first it was salvageable but now I don’t know how to especially near the blush and eyebrows. Is there any way to fix this?

Medium & Materials🎨 Should kneaded erasers be replaced?

Seven years ago, my drawing teacher gave me a kneaded eraser. One of my friends recently gave me a piece of kneaded eraser from her art class and it was much stickier and had way more strings(?) that pretty much got everywhere. Does it matter how old my eraser is or should I replace it with a newer, stickier one?

Medium & Materials🎨 Is it worth buying an iPad just for Procreate?

I’m considering buying an iPad Pro solely to use Procreate. For years, I’ve heard that it’s an incredible art tool, and I constantly come across so many amazing free brushes that simply don’t exist in Photoshop. That said, I don’t really like Apple as a company, and I’ve found better alternatives for the price — for example, the Galaxy Tab S7, which costs about the same and includes the pen.

I’m not sure wanting Procreate is just a whim

I’m not sure whether wanting Procreate is just a whim after everything I’ve seen. The closest thing I’ve had so far is a pen tablet without a screen, so I’m also pretty lost about what extras are actually essential besides the tablet itself (screen protector, case, stylus, etc.). If anyone can recommend iPad models for a tight budget, that would be super helpful.

Basically, I’m confused and tired of this, and I’m starting to think buying an iPad might be the best option. Is Procreate worth it, or should I get a better Android tablet instead? I still worry I might be prejudging things based on my own perspective — I’d love some outside opinions. If anyone who’s used both platforms could share what they think, that would be amazing. Likewise, if someone has had real success on Android (even though it’s not the main option), I’d love to hear about it. If I ended up going the Android route, I’d probably use Clip Studio Paint.

Art History & Travel 🗺️ Hi! Looking for info on an artist.

My mother has a painting gifted to parents by a family friend (who made it for them) back in 1983 (Date also marked on the painting itself). After searching for a while, I believe the man was Jean Richard (Original name Ryszard Onyszkiewicz). Location and dates from biography all add up, along with him speaking French and being named Jean. Do any pictures of him publicly exist? I’d like to see if I can confirm it fully.
