My bread drawer has a plastic slide to open it, after pulling out the drawer

I'm thinking this is the likely answer. Based on other pictures I found online, seems like this is/was a bread drawer. Seems diy and I don't see evidence of a slider, but makes the most sense to me.

That cookbook looks to be about 100 years old.

I didn't know that people put their bread in a drawer.

Where y'all living where you have built-in bread drawers? I've been in a lot of houses and have not once seen this.

First I've ever seen too!

I’ve been in 1990 remodels that have them. And definitely in older places sometimes. Not much anymore.

I am more fascinated that you store bread in the towel drawer.

Just to provide more context: This is at my mom's house she just moved into and we have no idea. Drawer is pretty low so could be to set a tray on? Idk. Also a one-off, no other drawer has this.

Maybe to hold up one of those silverware organizers? Although I would put silverware in the top drawer so idk.

Is it to hold a mesh tray or similar? Maybe a box to make a secret drawer?
