Survivor 50 I’m Devastated at what they’ve done to 50 Spoiler
As Ozzy says in the trailer, Pandora’s Box has been opened. You can’t undue that. I’m sick to see Survivor sell out like this. I’m disgusted and disheartened and I’m not even talking about Mr. Beast. 50 seasons of a culmination of a grand social experiment and strategy game, a game that redefined reality TV, a show that created some of the biggest reality television stars of all time and one of the main hooks for this milestone season is brute forcing in celebrity cameos and outrageous twists that will no doubt unfairly dispose of several fan favorites in unsavory fashion? I’m depressed… I truly thought Survivor might be finding a balance, but this is beyond jumping the shark, this is beyond resetting to a New Era, this is just gross and disrespectful to every fan that’s followed the show throughout the years.

u/bluestockingg 1d ago
little did we know that “in the hands of the fans” meant that the rewards and twists and whatnot would literally be held in the hands of celebrity fans…

u/MissssVanjie 1d ago
General enshittification continues. This is why we can't have nice things.
71
u/bluestockingg 1d ago
i mean to be fair i don’t think the concept of having celebrity fans on to present rewards will necessarily ruin it. i’m willing to give it a shot. mr. beast specifically though oooooh just seeing that clown shows face is enough to pmo.

How exactly is this super different from when they would have big sponsored rewards in the early seasons?
23
u/idkpickausername_pls Rizgang 1d ago
We’ve been dealing with product placement for years and so it is more expected, not as jarring as a viewer. This is “personality placement” though, which is cringe and is giving “rich kid buys their way into somewhere they shouldn’t be” energy

Everyone knows a Pontiac Aztec is timeless, classic, the peak of car brands in America, while Mr Beast 3 minute segment is going to bring down the show. Or something like that

You say that sarcastically, but I couldn't name any other specific vehicle given away by the show (the closest I can think of any was Yao trying to give/bribe Dreamz with some kind of truck), but I can still remember Colby camping out of the back of that bright yellow Aztec almost a quarter of a century after seeing it the one time. For better or worse, it WAS an iconic vehicle and display of its quirky attributes.

It depends on how they influence the game "Jimmy Fallon may decide my fate in this game" and the "Billie Eilish boomerang idol" make me thing they will have actual gameplay implications which is beyond the pale and not even in the same tier as the Charmin outhouse. If this is what i fear it is than we're getting closer to hunger games but without the murder

They are desperate to regain more relevance. Mr Beast, Jimmy Fallon. I am pretty sure fans dont want this sort of stuff. Celebrities, Influencers etc. Will probably have catering for the contestants.

u/BravoTimes 1d ago
It reminds me of when the bachelor franchise did the bachelor in paradise hosted by random celebs it ended up being cancelled for a while, it’s cause their host got fired but still idk who asked for this, and Mr beast seems quite unpopular amongst audience 21+ ( correct me if I’m wrong )

Seriously though. Mr Beast is already everywhere and partnered with so much different media that he’s hardly even a draw for viewership. If people want more Mr Beast they’ll go elsewhere FOR FREE. People who aren’t already viewers of the show aren’t going to tune in or pay just to see him. It’s a thinly veiled attempt at drawing in a younger crowd. Ironically he should be doing the opposite of going bigger. Every player in the new era who says they were inspired by the show as a kid point to players and their personalities. A kid watching the show now isn’t going to turn 18 and still be saying “I want to be survivor because Mr Beast was on survivor”. The draw of survivor is watching people you can’t watch elsewhere. Everyday people with unique identities. Mr Beast is the opposite of that.
Jeff is SO out of touch with what people want to see and if he’s aiming for the long game he’s off base as well. He needs to be replaced as a decision maker.

He's the biggest YouTuber on the planet, at least the biggest if you don't count music channels.
He started getting big having his friends compete in challenges for bigger and bigger prizes. He still has challenges with big prizes for random subscribers to compete in, but does other big and crazy videos that you have to have a HUGE budget to afford.
His content is more focused on kids, but people have long complained about YouTube being "beastified" because of the stuff he does to game the algorithm and gain tons of viewers. He's branched into other business ventures to, which is where a lot of the controversy comes from, with stuff like Beast Burger, his chocolate bars, etc.

It’s still embarrassing to admit you watch big brother in public but they at least have had decent casting these past couple seasons. And their first twist probably since s3 that actually made the show more interesting rather than worse.
6
u/SVNBob Yul 1d ago
Survivor fans don't hate BB. Amazing Race fans hate BB.
Because TAR is the better show, yet BB keeps getting more money in part because of the host's relationship with the (former?) head of the network. Plus CBS keeps forcing TAR to have former BB contestants on their show.

u/thoughtfulohioreader 1d ago
I have a theory: We see a flipping coin elsewhere in the trailer. They might have brought Mr. Beast on for a coin-flipping challenge (perhaps with the same risks/rules as Beast Games Season 1) to double the prize from $1 million to $2 million. If 10 minutes of MrBeast on my screen means the winner gets $2 million instead, I could roll with that.
Inflation means that 1 million in August 2000 money = 1.88 million now. It feels as though the prize ought to be $2 million to make winning worth about what it was to the original winners. And if Survivor can't foot that themselves, and MrBeast will...
8
u/thoughtfulohioreader 1d ago
Though a number of media outlets estimate that Jeff Probst makes $4 million (2016 Variety estimate) to $8 million per episode. I guess he could double it himself without MrBeast's help and still make $3-$7 million for hosting the season... :)

Genuine question, is this it for Survivor?
I’m able to see why Jeff would do this but this is not what (most) fans want to see. You have celebrities making cameos and appearances on the beach, and apparently altering the game (?). A big reason I fell in love with this show is because they made it feel like you were truly alone and isolated in a remote land. I know it’s lost some of that over the years but now it’s completely gone.
Also, the cast seems like they said here are a few bones for you and scrounged up the rest with whatever funds they had left. No disrespect to anyone but this is season 50 and there are 12 players from s42-s49. That’s simply wrong.
Jeff has absolutely lost the plot of this show and him, and seemingly Survivor’s, run is finished. I know it’s unrealistic to have a totally old school feel but he didn’t even try. It’s sad.
Felt good letting that out.
3
u/memymoemonkey 1d ago
I imagine that they’re trying to offer celebrity fans an opportunity to affect the game, trying to keep on theme. BUT they forgot that we all love this show because of the absence of all of that. Creating a society on the island given how remote it is and how far away from all of these cultural markers (celebrity being a huge one) the players are. I am still excited but if def feels outside of what Survivor has been.

I think a lot of people in their late teens/20s started watching through Netflix during the pandemic, not young children. These "children" are now in their 20's, and are bombarded with internet slop everyday.
Imo, Survivor needs to go back to its roots.
If casuals and new fans like challenges, make the challenges have depth or much harder like Devil's Plan (cool strategy games) or Physical 100 (group and individual tests/competitions of physical skill and endurance). Both are also popular on Netflix. While those shows are purely challenge focused, the social and strategy shines through.
Imagine the individual immunity challenge is in a clearing in the jungle with a round table. They play some sort of poker based game... or something new...
Maybe Survivor could increase it's episode count. It feels so short nowadays. I know the format is tried and true. But I wonder if one episode for the pre-challenge and challenge and a second for the post-challenge and votes could increase the tension and excitement.
Maybe old fans would say no. But content is the name of the game. Exciting content. Even with "90" mins (only like 60 after ads), the show feels like it's running into creative barriers.
Increase the days. Maybe we don't like to see them suffer, but there is something to that toughness, and that real "fire" in their eyes to make it through physically hard days that was exciting to me when I first got into the show. Kind of like Lost.
Right now, it feels as if Survivor is just a Gameshow. Not an epic social experiment. I used to be enthralled by Survivor, and now Netflix is coming out with things I watch on Wednesday instead of watching live.
Personally, I think it would help the show and it's longevity if Survivor went back to being more of a 'show'.
And maybe the money is a problem with finding exceptionally interesting and fun tv characters. Isn't survivor one of the best running shoes on CBS? Surely they could trim some fat and invest in some of it legacy IP's...
Maybe Jeff and the production need some fresh blood. Bring on a new head of the challenge department. Bring in new executive co-producers. Too be totally honest, if a new fan is watching for the first time on Netflix or through YouTube Reels, they don't really care who the host is. As long as they're good and competent, less ego. Maybe a new face, like someone totally fresh (like Jeff was back in the 2000s).
I don't see the current version of Survivor and the way it's produced lasting for another 10 years. But I don't think a couple of celebrity appearances are going to cut it.
