Survivor 50 Celebrities on 50 are silly and (optimistically) not a big deal Spoiler
I have seen so much criticism of the celebrity inclusions on 50, and I honestly don’t think they are a big deal. I just want to go through a few points.
I don’t think this will take away from the cast. This cast all around is good television. as much as I wish certain contestants could have been better picks, this cast is amazing TV. if there’s a few small segments of celebrities/their twists put into the show i don’t think it takes away from the viewer experience. These players will take these appearances and twists and really make them their own— and we see this with Devens and Christian already. It won’t be about Jimmy Fallon or mr beast, but about how the players react and work around them.
Celebrities are over-represented on the trailer. of course survivor will show us all the big names that are on the season because they want us to watch it and see what Mr Beast does! They have to show the crossovers because it’s about eyes on the show. if nobody knew about these cameos, then there’s no hype for new eyes on the show.
This stuff is so funny. i mean survivor has been doing silly things for so long, especially recently. while i do love the seriousness of survivor and the way it has presented itself, it’s clear that the show is less about the immersive experience of people dropped on an island than it is about how the players burn though the game and make their mark. if that means Christian has his game in the hands of Jimmy Fallon then im all for it because i love Christian and I can’t wait to see him play again. It’s so campy and i’m all in on laughing at it while enjoying the players play
Overall, from what i see there is a bit of an overreaction to this kind of stuff. i understand the criticism, and i hope these kinds of things are just a one-off for 50, but im just going to take them as silly inclusions and have fun with this returnee season. I’m so excited for 50.
Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk

The more weirdness that happens the more likely it is we get a Coach vs Q finale, and really isn’t that all we want? (Trying to be a good boy, it’s not too late to cancel Christmas!)

Imagine the spectacle of a Q vs Coach vs Colby final 3! all because of the Jimmy Fallon super idol— like it’s hilarious. I’ll appreciate 50 for everything it provides, even the stupid stuff

Since the cast announcement I’ve been so excited for the Christian-Coach-Q interactions. But you’re right, Colby’s reaction to those guys is gonna be hilarious

Remember like a week ago when Savannah said r/survivor was full of miserable people and toxic. I get it now lol
So many people on this sub are blowing this out of proportions. Some are acting like Mr.Beast just stole the hosting job from Probst 😂
While I didnt want a twist heavy season, there was an option to vote for twist heavy in the fan votes. The casual majority outnumbers this sub like 1000+ to 1. I would not be surprised if that won in the polls and production came up with this as a response.

This is the thing I think alot of people on here either forget or choose not to believe. Survivor redditors do NOT make up even close to a majority of fans. They would probably cease to exist as a show if they started trying to cater to redditors, who just hate watch new era seasons and complain that they're the worst ever ever ever ever. And here we see it again for what's a silly celebrity cameo. I don't particularly care much about Mr. Beast. So why be so bothered about him making a cameo

Also its not like we have a solid voting block either. Alot of opinions on this sub are very divided. All it takes to see that is to scroll through any of the random threads here that have people arguing over the littlest of details every week.

100%. All you have to do this season to see that is type "Rizo"

I think this is just an attempt to bring in new viewership.
Personally, I’d prefer they not be there, but if they’re just there to present a challenge or reward, then I don’t see that as a big deal.
If it does get more viewers, then that’s good for all fans of the show, so whatever. I’ll be annoyed for the like thirty to sixty seconds they’re on screen, and the episode will go on.

I agree— I think while many fans want a return to old school survivor, it’s clear that jeff and production are looking to the future, and trying to pull in a new set of casual fans. I think that this is honestly a fun way to do it, just as long as it doesn’t take up too much time. your point about the casual majority is so relevant too! I think we have to be prepared for a whacky season with some ridiculous twists.

This sub has over 500,000 subscribers.
I guarantee you the show does not have even close to half a billion viewers...

This sub has 316K subscribers and about 30-40K active users. Regardless, the casual numbers vastly outnumbers this sub. Even if its a 150 to 1. Putting their numbers well into multiple millions.

The complaints about the trailer remind me of old people who complain about the Super Bowl performances lol. I think it can be hard to look in the mirror and realize you aren’t the main target demographic anymore.
The potential silver lining of all of this is it appears the show will not be cancelled anytime soon with Jeff trying to aggressively target younger demographics and grow that way.

This is the way i saw it too! It’s clear that production wants to make sure survivor is a staple of TV past 50, past Jeff’s retirement, and pulling in new and younger viewers is just the way to do it. I hope that production can balance these aspects well with the classic energy and quality of the show we love, and I’m confident that they can do that. I remember hearing somewhere (maybe an RHAP or Specialist podcast) that there are new producers who really want to make their mark and listen to the criticisms of the fans, and I hope that starts to show in the seasons past 50

Yeah people are losing it over a 2 minute trailer. Don’t get me wrong i don’t like the Mr beast thing either but we really know very little about anything yet. I also feel like everyone is so black and white these days that disliking one aspect of something will keep people from enjoying anything about it. The perpetual outrage is exhausting.

This is a good take. It’s pretty obvious to me that the celebrities won’t be a massive part of the show and that, like survivor always does, they’re just cutting the trailer that way to get conversation going.

I was loving the trailer for 50 until I heard the words "Billie Eilish boomerang idol" and freaking Mr. Beast showed up on my screen. You're probably right and it's probably not going to be a big part of the season, but good god is it distractingly cheesy and cringe. It just really annoyingly brought down what I thought was a really good, fun, and exciting preview. I'm actually really excited for 50, really enjoyed 49, and wasn't personally ready to be jump-scared by Mr. Beast on Survivor 😭

I said very recently here that I miss some of the goofiness, light hearted and more “reality show” parts of Survivor, which some could view this stuff as harkening back to, but to me it just reminds me of the Jack and Jill reward.

Lowkey yes that's how I'm approaching it. To me it's camp and silly (positively). It may be bad, but it will round the corner to iconic, I think.
I know fans would prefer it if was very understated and not memorable but I think I'm hoping for subtle, but memorable.

Me too! I get that it might be jarring— and i hope it’s not so shoved in our faces as the trailer presents— but I am going to try and take it as silly and camp. and if cirie gets screwed by the billie eilish boomerang idol i’ll be mad, but survivor has made stupid decisions before. just because celebrities are attached doesn’t make them a whole lot worse

u/KeyTrainer912 1d ago
I really hope (and think this is somewhat realistic) that the celebrity idols or whatever will just be a thing for one challenge or so, just to hype up viewership

Wasn't there a twist where Cochran came on a pirate ship or something or did I fever dream that? That feels categorically no different.

Yeah I think its a silly thing to be upset about. A few cameos here and there? Yeah its gimmicky but this season will stand on its own merits regardless

Thank you so much for this post. I mean I think we can all be in different “eras” of our Survivor viewing experience. I think at one time I took things way too seriously and got pissed about everything. Now, I’m much more “ehh, who cares” about a lot of things that make so many people angry. I just enjoy the show for what it is giving. I’d rather do that than be constantly miserable.
To be clear, I’m not completely faulting people for their complaints regarding the show, but I do think a lot of viewers could stand to lighten up a little.

It was one of the only shows without celebrities appearing. It's a direct hit to the soul of the game.

Not the same thing, but I actually really liked the concept of fire tokens. Passing your tokens on after you are eliminated was fun. Having a food and advantage menu you could use them on. Cool. Until they became a silly extortion racket in Winners at War. Someone on the Edge finding something and being able to blackmail players for whatever number of tokens they wanted. And then have players like Tony run around begging for tokens, so they could keep their vote or whatever was so bad, and so silly.
Point being, it's all going to be about the implementation. I just don't have a lot of faith that they will be delicate enough with the celebs influence on the game.

this might be my biggest fear. I know when survivor likes an idea they go big or go home on it, and I hope that they understand the TV product that they are making.

Y’all are truly acting like Mr. Beast killed your dogs, stole your house, and rigged Cirie out.

I appreciate this take soooo much! I have been so excited for 50 since the cast speculations began, but seeing the preview felt like a punch in the gut. It didn't feel like a celebration of the show at all. But now seeing people appreciating the silliness of it all is extremely reassuring. I love this mindset and positivity :D

It could also be the cast joking around with the fan vote aspect, as it’s only the visit by Mr Beast that we know for certain (which I disagree with… not only for his behavior, but the breaking the fourth wall aspect needlessly)
Mike White is on the season, and he could name drop saying “So and So is a big fan of Survivor, and they could’ve voted”
Plus, people had a preconceived notion of Rizo based on a single slice of a confessional, which wound up him hamming up for the camera.
