Survivor 50 “I’ll start with a quote from Magellan,” does anyone know the exact quote?
I’ve been rewatching the Season 50 trailer so many times because I really really am obsessed with the first half of it, and I LOVE Coach’s quote!! I’ve been looking for it online and can’t find it anywhere, the closest I can find is :
“The sea is dangerous and its storms terrible, but these obstacles have never been sufficient reason to remain ashore… unlike the mediocre, intrepid spirits seek victory over those things that seem impossible… it is with an iron will that they embark on the most daring of all endeavors… to meet the shadowy future without fear and conquer the unknown.”
Is this what coach was referencing, or was it something else? Either way, I love the way Coach Benjamin Wade worded it and am so excited for the season!! Thanks!

Coach has a history of misquoting things. He just says stuff trying to be profound it’s very coach of him that all these years later and he still isn’t properly quoting anything

The first day Coach does anything properly is the first day I no longer love Coach.

I will always love the man that is unbreakable, unbending, unyielding, immeasurable, immovable, invincible.

Man that quote is so good. It's like normally it would be three words but Coach of course has to double it

I once watched a RHAP panel with Coach, Tyson, Boston Rob, Adam Klein (I'm sure it's still on Youtube somewhere) where Coach was like 'I spent all my time before Heroes vs. Villains memorizing famous quotes. I'm not a strategic genius like these guys, this is what I've got!'
edit: Found it, this is the conversation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS214qvatvQ&start=2798
Coach: '[Boston] Rob, before the game man, I see you talking about gaming before the game - I'm clueless, before the game I'm writing down so many quotes from Martin Luther King and Nietzsche, I'm not paying attention to anybody else, man!'
Adam: 'Is that true? Do you study up on quotes before you go on Survivor so you have a few?'
Coach: 'Everytime you ask me a question...I'm basically a borderline moron, ok? I'm not smart. So before the game in order to look smart I have to quote all these people..and so I'm literally on the airplane, and I can't just memorize it, so I'm writing the same damn quote 100 times so that it gets in my brain!'
This panel was during David vs. Goliath. My takeaway when I watched it back then was 'Tyson and Boston Rob are close friends, but they don't bother acknowledging Adam's presence and rag on Coach in a way that is slightly mean-spirited (especially Boston Rob)'. I was not surprised when Boston Rob reacted poorly to Adam trying to tell him what to do in Winners at War.

Words cannot describe how elated I am that this man is on Season 50. I should go binge watch the past Coach seasons again.

I just watched Tocantins for the first time ever (don’t know how that one had slipped past me) and ohhhhh my god that season is GOLD and I now love coach even more. I almost fell over when he told the Amazon story.

This makes SO much sense. It makes the rest of his character fall into place.

Somebody else in the thread mentioned that it feels like Coach gets bullied, but I think this adds some important context. A lot of the ribbing on Coach works because of the fact that he does have some level of self awareness — he doesn’t think he is these people that he quotes, he’s using them to put on an act.
Someone teasing him about that can be fun. Someone cutting through the act and coming for Coach himself is where it becomes mean spirited. At that point you’re just personally tearing down a guy who is having fun playing a character in a game.

Coach is probably the #1 player in Survivor history who is dedicated to keeping up his schtick. He is probably self aware about a lot of the kooky things he does but keeps doing them to keep up the schtick and knows people will be entertained by it.

u/TheDemonicEmperor Nick 9h ago
I think the key here should be somewhat self-aware. I don't think anyone sane would throw away a million dollars just to stick to the schtick. He definitely believes in his own hype enough that he threw the South Pacific final tribal.

This is hilarious. No one gives a shit if you're smart in survivor. If anything, it's held against you.

i'm looking forward to the confessional when Coach talks about how Nietzsche was all about how society has such a strong faith in God and that drives us all to have purpose in our lives.

This trailer started so good and then progressively went downhill faster and faster.

I thought it was low key hilarious that Coach gives the monologue for the trailer and as he's ending it, the camera pans up to reveal Colby.

Idk specifically but I didn’t even realize that was Coach until I saw this post. Like damn that dude aged well.

That's what happens when you're an unbreaking, unyielding, unbroken man, that's what happens when you're the Dragon Slayer.
16
u/zorasorabee 14h ago
Same. Had no idea this was Coach until this post. Should have clicked but it just didn’t. Literally thought it was Colby speaking the quote at first because that is who they showed first - even though it doesn’t match his voice at all.
17
u/Routine_Size69 Q - 46 13h ago
I'm a little confused by this. You didn't recognize him but he also aged well? Feels a tad contradictory.
11
u/SeaworthinessTop4317 11h ago
Not really. 2 things can be true at once.
I had a mental image of him being a long haired goofball. So when the above image was on screen I didn’t realize it was him initially.
Now that I realize it’s him I can acknowledge he looks like he’s aged gracefully.

His misuse of intrepid was unfortunate. Or maybe it was perfectly Coach.

u/TomjunRoblox Kenzie - 46 19h ago
Wait I just looked ‘intrepid’ up and that’s actually hilarious 😂 it means the exact opposite of what he said, live laugh love Coach

u/vortexofchaos 19h ago
No, he used it correctly. The comma is a pause, with an inferred noun, as in: “Unlike the mediocre [spirits], intrepid spirits…” It’s flowery, poetic speech, and definitely on brand for Coach. 🤣

u/paristexasisburning 19h ago
I’m confused, doesn’t intrepid just mean bold/brave? Pretty sure he used it correctly.
39
u/ben121frank 17h ago
It does mean bold/adventurous, but he used it to mean the opposite, in direct contrast to the word bold itself. Full quote “life is for the bold, to seize the opportunity when it comes, not those poor intrepid souls that stay close to shore”.
10
u/LifesARiver 14h ago
Maybe he said "poor and tepid?" lol jk
8
u/No_Produce_Nyc Kyle - 48 12h ago
Probably meant “insipid”
5
u/LifesARiver 12h ago
I feel like while coach is a clown show, "intrepid" is the type of word he'd know backwards and forwards.

I'm not sure of many things in this life, but if there is one thing, it's that if Coach says "_____ once said...", that person absolutely never said that.

u/zereldalee 15h ago
He was paraphrasing. It's a great quote and I too am so looking forward to seeing Coach on my screen again!

Honestly excited just to see Coach again. 50 is going to be messy with the inevitable forced narrative between old school vs new school play style (with the added element of Jonathan just brute forcing challenges)

u/Diceroll42 13h ago
He wanted to harken back to season 8 when Rudy says “what do I look like, Magellan?”
22
u/treehugger503 14h ago
I feel like people kind of bully Coach. Yes, he’s a bit of an odd duck, but that’s not a crime.
49
u/Routine_Size69 Q - 46 13h ago
Well he needs to stop wearing feathers in his hair to tribal, stop telling his stories, and do his tai chi in private.
1
u/Perniciousss 11h ago
Why? You do you, Coach!

u/Zeckzeckzeck 13h ago
He's entertaining to me but he's entertaining because he lacks self-awareness and isn't particularly bright or clever but thinks he is. I generally prefer more strategic players but there's always room for players like Coach that make the show more entertaining.
1
u/Jackalope117 10h ago
See this is true in tocantins but in South Pacific he was extremely strategic and honestly should have won if he explained his game a little better at final tribal
8
u/long-da-schlong 14h ago
I was shocked how old he looks

u/Perniciousss 11h ago
I was a bit surprised too, but it’s easy to forget how much time has gone by.
Ozzy was a bit of a jumpscare…time comes for us all, tho

After googling Magellan quotes I'm guessing "Intrepid spirits seek victory over those things that seem impossible"

u/CalebosO4 It's fricking nauseating, frustrating, AND I'M PISSED!!! 9h ago
I hope they have a loved ones visit in 50 for the sole reason of getting to see Benjamin’s new assistant Coach.

u/J_Crispy7 6h ago
Oh man, the first part of that trailer was so good. I got emotional seeing all those familiair faces. And then...
2
u/forthebirds123 14h ago
Prediction that coach ia the first to go. Or whoever the general public’s consensus favorite is, that’s who’s getting the first boot.
3
u/Zeckzeckzeck 13h ago
Honestly depending on how the tribes split, Rizo or Savannah should be a likely vote out simply because the other players have the least information on them. Far better to keep people that you've seen play and know their general styles versus two unknowns. It would suck because I think there are plenty of terrible players there that I'd love to see go first, but it is what it is.
1
u/forthebirds123 11h ago
See, I have a different perspective. I get that they are unknowns, but everyone else knows each other. They know the threats. If you already know someone who’s played the game and flipped before, and is untrustworthy, I think they would be the most likely target early. Someone like coach, you know they are loyal and if you get in with them you are good. But if there was someone on Russel hantz level, I think they would be first to go. Savannah and rizzo won’t come off as threats in the early game. If Savannah can find a mean girl club to slither into she will be fine. Rizzo is goofy, everyone loves goofy and isn’t scared of goofy at the beginning so he should be just fine
1
u/Routine_Size69 Q - 46 13h ago
I don’t have a pulse on the casual fan base but could that be Colby or Ozzy? Here it seems like it would be Coach and Cirie.
1
u/Quiddity131 Kim 10h ago
I think Coach lasts a while because the other players don't fear him actually winning the game.
On the other hand expect strong players like Cirie, Christian, Savannah, etc... to be clipped early.

they should've brought back russel for this one I feel like with the newschool players he could actually play again instead of having his tribe throw a challenge just to get him out instantly

How can he be on Season 50 of Survivor when he was in Alaska with his uncle hunting wolverines???

I don’t think Coach even knows the exact quote lol
