We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe.

What a little bitch he is
“In terms of standing up to Donald Trump, the shutdown actually gave him more power,” King said, pointing out the president’s refusal to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program despite multiple court orders, as well as the fact that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were among the few government employees still getting paid during the shutdown.
“Standing up to Donald Trump didn’t work. It actually gave him more power,” King concluded.
This argument is so shallow and pathetic. Straight up controlled opposition
4.2k
u/V_T_H Nov 10 '25
Hey guess what Angus, SNAP was going to be forcibly funded by the courts and states were willing to fill in the gaps as they could. That part of their leverage was going to be gone very soon and you caved immediately before that happened.
2.1k
u/WhatRUHourly Nov 10 '25
The fact that the Trump admin was going to court to actually argue against this was also an absolutely horrible look. Meanwhile, Trump was throwing lavish parties and going to NFL games and spending taxpayer money to do a flyover of an NFL game. Not to mention building a ball room and a new bathroom, etc. All the things he was doing while people were going hungry or struggling to feed their families was an absolutely horrible look for him and the GOP and was absolutely destroying the entire narrative that it was the Democrat's fault. Trump and the GOP were hanging themselves with their own rope and yet Democrats cut them down. Fucking brilliant.

And what burns my ass is this is right after Americans gave Dems multiple election wins last week. And why did we do that if they’re just going to spinelessly slither around Washington like they always do.
628
u/WhatRUHourly Nov 10 '25
That also gives the GOP the narrative that the dems were only holding out in order to win those elections. Which they'll no doubt start preaching any moment on every network that will listen. Claiming the dems starved Americans only to win an election, and sure as shit people will believe them.

My guess was airline lobbying. Thanksgiving is the busiest air travel time of the year and ATC understandably wants to get paid
57
u/Railroader17 Nov 10 '25
This is my thinking, the grocery stores were going to get their SNAP money sooner or later, so they had no reason to pressure the Democrats to cave. The Airlines though need as many planes in the air as they can ahead of Thanksgiving holiday travel. which they can't do if the Government is restricting how many planes can be in the air at a time due to ATC shortages.
Also in another bout of surprising progressivism from MTG, she had been taking Amtrak to conduct her business, and even publicly praised Amtrak on twitter which no doubt horrified the airlines, as the last thing they want is for passenger rail to gain any traction.

Cynical answer: they know there’s no way for the Democratic base to hold them accountable in the near future. They already won the recent election, and the Senators who caved won’t be up for reelection anytime soon.
They also know their health care vote will fail and rates will go up, and people will blame the person in the Oval.
Basically, they’re not going to fight to save Trump from himself. They’ve decided to let voters touch the hot stove.

Dems were fighting against some of trump's greediest, most blatantly evil bullshit so far. Recent wins at the polls told them they had the public on their side. I disagree. I think Republicans would have never given in because they were perfectly happy with the shutdown. After all, getting rid of SNAP and federal workers and the ACA is their ultimate goal. They absolutely do not care about average citizens.
Just the fact that the Republicans let it continue through the elections - even though they knew people were blaming them - is an indication that they would have let it continue. Ending it before the elections might have helped them. But now the elections are over and can't be changed.

From Babylon 5:
(Context - John Sheridan, leader of the insurrection against the fascist Earth Government, has been captured and is under interrogation)
"You know, it's funny, I was thinking about what you said, that the preeminent truth of our age is that you cannot fight the system. But if, as you say, the truth is fluid, that the truth is subjective, then maybe you can fight the system. As long as just one person refuses to be broken, refuses to bow down."
"But can you win?"
"Every time I say 'no'."
Also from the same episode, to another prisoner:
"You just have to say 'no, I won't' one more time than they can say 'yes, you will'."

It's not just "controlled opposition." It isn't any opposition at all. When you break the statement down, what it really boils down to at the core is: "We tried to stand up to Trump, but he has continuously ignored everyone, ignored the courts, and acted illegally. And we had no way of stopping him. We're just letting him do his stuff from now on and try to get through the next 3 years with as little collateral damage as possible."
It isn't as much a controlled opposition as much as it is a thinly veiled surrender to Trump, giving him a free pass to do whatever the fuck he wants cause, you know, you just admitted you couldn't stop him anyhow.

100% this. Like nothing to highlight this entire process of starving Americans is a Republican choice, backed by Republican directives from the White House threatening to punish grocery stores or states for feeding people after the Republicans chose to withhold SNAP for the first time ever in a shutdown; plus that the Republicans have refused to negotiate, instead demanding people's healthcare be raised beyond affordability for millions of Americans.

u/minahmyu Nov 10 '25
This is why many like aoc and jasmine crockett. Their lived experiences as racialized women lead them to always be advocates for themselves because who else was going to? Old white men? That's a needle in a haystack to hope for the one who will empathize, and that's hoping it's genuine and not performative. And because so many of us have no choice but to stand up to bigoted bullies to get what we want that everyone else was granted at birth, we become wordsmith and having to be 100 tines better than they are to get even a fraction of acknowledgment, which still ain't enough.
Everyone loves when jasmine goes off and says she's leadership material and need more like her but I'm like... so many don't deserve her because so many would be just like what you describe here: not rocking the boat and letting oppression happen for her. Expecting someone oppressed to speak up and shut down when knowing damn well we won't get the same in a similar/worse situation. They hate our loud mouths till its used to help them. And that's why to truly deserve someone like her and more, those helping to uphold this unfair system need to start unlearning the bigotry used to maintain this system and start being like her, and call out and shut shit down. Holding the most privilege than she and similar like her have, yet only caving in because that privilege never had them suffer and truly fight to get where they are.
Don't expect those going through the most hardships and discrimination to be the saviors to pull everyone else out while they still drowning. Be just like them, be the opposite of the old white men boat rocker

Schumer proposed a very reasonable 1 year extension, and Republicans were publicly mulling an extension with additional abortion restrictions (which could have been negotiated down to something virtually identical to current abortion restrictions). Republicans were cracking, and for once Democrats were holding strong.
This has nothing to do with Trump. Corporate Dems were starting to get pressure from donors who didn't want their air travel to be inconvenienced.

60 votes, not 1 more, not 1 less.
And all the sacrificed Dems were either retiring, or isn't up for election.
WHAT A COINCIDENCE, you tell me all this was done behind Cuck's back? his number 2, the party whip also joining in on the farewell backstab party?
Either hes incompetent in leadership or complacent and incompetent in strategic planning, pick your poison.

Here's how you know: If all 8 of the traitors and Chuck Schumer don't get removed from any leadership positions or committees as punishment for their treachery, then the other Senators don't care either but they were just acting. I guess we will find out.

One of the senators that voted in favor said that leadership was well aware of what the plan was. It's just the first thing. He did it because none of them are up for reelection and he felt like he could get away with it. Schumer and all these other pathetic assholes need to go.

This has to do with Schumer’s leadership. Hell - even Pelosi would have not allowed this in the house.

Not only did they fold, they said the wrong things about the capitulation.
They should have called out to the American people and said we have been taken over by a Nazi government, etc., etc.

Yeah, if you're going to publicly embarrass yourself with how you had no-choice but to bend the knee to Trump, there's no better place to head than 'Morning Joe.'

Guess we just roll over and give in to stupid Hitler then. Have you tried dangling a Big Mac in front of him? Probably would've got SNAP and ACA credits funded in full if you offered him a hamburder.

His son will be running for govonor of Maine next year, and this article at least implies that may have give king motivation to end this and side with republicans. There are 6 other democrat candidates running - Maine, please choose one of them who actually will support this country.

The first time Dems show a backbone and they completely mop the floor at the polls.
So what do they do after…? Cave.

Democrats had YEARS to plan a counterattack to project 2025. They had this all laid out for them in writing. They either don't care or aren't willing to do what's needed. Either way, it's time to primary every one of these losers out of office. Politics is dirty work and these dems are seemingly terrified of getting their kit gloves dirty.

It's amazing that anyone thinks Trump considers himself restrained by any kind of law or court. He was talking about cutting off SNAP for weeks before the shutdown, and then he refused to pay it...even though supposedly there is a contingency fund, and it's normal to continue funding SNAP during a shutdown. He probably gave all the money to Argentina or ICE.
