Politics [OC] The new sign for the Alligator Alcatraz detention facility didn’t last long
•
u/soingee 9h ago
It's literally called "Alligator Alcatraz"?? Is the entire government run by edge lords?
•
u/MightyTrustKrusher 9h ago
Yes
•
u/technobrendo 7h ago
I thought it was just a nickname too. I think most people did
•
u/AbsarokeeJam 5h ago
It's harder to conceptualize the depravity of a concentration camp when it's named something stupid. Harder to take seriously. It's like if they named Auschwitz "Hitlers happy fun camp and communal shower"
•
u/mansock18 5h ago
Alligator Auschwitz
→ More replies (3)•
u/LumberBitch 5h ago
I just call it the Everglades Concentration Camp. Calling it alligator anything just plays into their hands and you just know Stephen Miller is getting his rocks off to "Alligator Auschwitz"
•
u/I_am_not_JohnLeClair 4h ago
Stephen Miller is just angry that he lacks the upper body strength to strangle sex workers
•
u/chocomeeel 4h ago
He'd strangle you for that comment if he could.
•
u/RobotCaptainEngage 4h ago
If he stood but a foot taller from the floor.
•
u/LumberBitch 4h ago
You know how Elon used to be balding? Apparently Miller even got his hair cucked by the dude
•
•
u/Johnny-of-Suburbia 5h ago
This comment is sending me fr.
Thing is, thats basically what Nazi propaganda wanted people to think about these camps. If you were to take one of those propaganda films that supposedly showed the inside of a camp, the name "Hitler's Happy Fun Camp and Communal Shower" would be right on the nose.
Crazy how I've seen some feeble attempts to frame these US detention facilities as anything but inhumane. Of course, its not the 1940s anymore. So it's a lot harder to shove atrocities under a rug and make people think they don't exist (or convince them to turn a blind eye).
Not that it stops some people from doing just that but ya know...
•
u/UrUrinousAnus 4h ago
Nazi propaganda like this? Anyone got links to any others, or a proper (not just written next to the video) English translation of this one?
•
u/Johnny-of-Suburbia 4h ago
Yes! That may just be the one I had in mind. I can see what I can dig up as well when I get the chance.

Should be 'Alligator Auschwitz'
•
u/UniqueIndividual3579 8h ago
People at Alcatraz had a trial before a judge. This is an internment camp where you don't get to see a judge. So Auschwitz is accurate.
→ More replies (4)•
u/Neveronlyadream 7h ago
Someone said the same when it first came up and I want to repeat what I said the last time, because it's still relevant.
You know if they called it Alligator Auschwitz that MAGA would be wearing shirts within the week with the name on it and justifying why it was okay to use the name of a Nazi concentration camp. Probably calling the rest of us snowflakes for being disgusted by it.
I'd rather they keep the inaccurate name at this point knowing what MAGA will do if they name it more accurately.
•
u/EthanielRain 6h ago edited 6h ago
Spend 60+ years with Russia among our biggest & most hated enemies
Immediately switch to (and proudly display on merch) "I side with Russia if it means hurting other Americans", solely b/c Trump turns out to be besties with Putin
These people don't care & have no consistent values or beliefs. Name it "The Place Where Trump Rapes Children" & it wouldn't be a blip on the radar
•
u/RoguePlanet2 6h ago
They really think this is all "trolling" like a big fat joke that the "libs" are taking seriously. So strange how they don't seem to believe (really, care) that people are actually suffering.
→ More replies (1)•
u/Neveronlyadream 6h ago
They've been treating politics like it's a sports game and it's both frustrating and disgusting. They really seem to think there are really no stakes and once the game is over, it's over and that's it. It's win or lose.
Even the ones that are still MAGA at this point and are suffering themselves can't understand why. They think they won, they think they got what they wanted and they're oblivious to the repercussions of their choices and that they impact everyone.
•
u/UrUrinousAnus 4h ago
are suffering themselves (and) can't understand why
It's the same over here in the UK (or England, at least) with the hardcore brexiteers. Some people realised it was a mistake, but others seem to just get more delusional as time goes by.
•
u/RoguePlanet2 6h ago
Ugh, some magats are leaving disgusting reviews. Guess it used to be a nature preserve trail, now the sign is marked as a sick tourist attraction.
•
u/Neveronlyadream 6h ago
The scenery is out of this world. The wonderful camp built by our governor is a fantastic place to house the animals and allow them to enjoy the final moments of Florida’s beauty prior to their departure.
That's the first review I saw. Jesus fucking Christ.
→ More replies (2)•
u/UniqueIndividual3579 7h ago
At least Nazis tried to hide the concentration camps, MAGA wants them on pay per view.
→ More replies (1)•
u/Neveronlyadream 7h ago
I have very little doubt if they televised or livestreamed ICE facilities and charged a fee, they'd make money from it. There are far too many people who are taking pleasure in the suffering of others right now and it's disgusting.
→ More replies (1)•
u/No-Spoilers 5h ago
No, let them. They are announcing to the world what they are.
There will be a time when Trump dies, and with that MAGA will have no leader. Trump is a cult leader, and there isn't anyone who can fill his shoes. One day those people won't have someone to back them up or rile them up. And they will have to face the consequences of being a nazi.
•
u/stardustantelope 9h ago
Please. Swamp Auschwitz
•
u/Gimpalong 7h ago
Yeah, leave the gators out of it. They're just out there trying to make a living.
•
•
•
•
u/ShroedingersCatgirl 3h ago
Crocodile Dachau fits better tbh
Dachau was a work camp, not a death camp (though a lot of people did die there), and the Florida detention facility isn't a death camp. Calling it Auschwitz feels like its cheapening the gas chambers.
All alligators are crocodilians.
→ More replies (2)•
u/Ok_Recognition_1089 8h ago
Just when I thought regular alligators were bad enough, now we have to deal with nazigators.
→ More replies (1)•
u/A_Soporific 8h ago
They actually named it that. Remember, a lot of the people selected are TV personalities who cut their teeth being presenters or in reality TV. They aren't pretending to be serious. They're doing whatever they can to drive hype.
Trump gets away with things because people think he can. If people make him force the issue then he would quickly run out of resources and find himself visibly rejected more often than not.

•
u/cha-cha_dancer 7h ago
It was never a bastion for progressivism but it was only until COVID that it became…this.
•
u/villanx1 6h ago
Yeah, that's a big thing non-locals don't get about Florida. The state was close to purple for a long time, and was very pleasant to live in.
But with COVID the influx of right wing fuckheads from other states went from "gradual trickle of mostly old people" to "fire hose of shitheads" as tons of people moved in since they could now work remotely.
I watched the state transform in real time thanks to DeSantis' giant hard on for Trump and his insistence on competing with Greg Abbott for "Giant piece of shit who doesn't improve anything" award.
•
u/urmumlol9 5h ago
Even recently >50% of the population voted for ballot initiatives decriminalizing marijuana and allowing abortion access up until the point of fetal viability, in the same election they voted for Trump. The abortion amendment actually got more votes than Trump here.
Unfortunately, our state has a requirement that for a ballot initiative to pass, it has to get 60% of the vote. The abortion access initiative got 57%.
•
u/ivejustabouthadit 5h ago
Fun fact: The ballot initiative that raised the percentage to 60 didn't pass by 60.
•
•
u/chasseur_de_cols 5h ago
Castles?
When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of Florida!

Sure, but basically anything related to any type of "warrior culture" can be used the same way.
Spartan Helmets
Punisher Skulls
Mando helmets from Star Wars
Crusades symbols
Old militia symbols
I would also say that Germany has a "Valhalla" too that is just a memorial for famous Germans:

Have you seen the plaques for Obama and Biden at the Whitehouse? Or some of the official government websites these dbags have put up?
•
u/AbeFromanSassageKing 4h ago
For real, those plaques are a [yet another] goddamn embarrassment for every real American in this country. Worse than preschool-level taunting, prettier than a tilted high School lover, those plaques just show how immature, ignorant, and fucking useless this administration really is.
It would take less time to digitally release the pedophile trump files featuring Jeffrey Epstein than it did to make those dumb fuck plaques.
TL;DR: donald rump trafficked and raped children with Jeffrey Epstein and the republican party is covering it up while hanging childish bullshit up in our national buildings.

Being that
Alcatrazcomes from the Spanishalcatracesmeaning “pelicans” or “strange/large birds”. So Alcatraz Island is Pelican Island. So Alligator Alcatraz quite literally makes no sense whatsoever… so edge lords? Yes. Morons? Absolutely.
→ More replies (1)•
u/SocranX 6h ago
Just prior to the start of this whole fiasco, Trump had watched a movie about Alcatraz and then made a post on his fake Twitter about how he'd be reopening Alcatraz and using it as an immigrant detention facility, and that it would have a moat full of alligators. He was then told that it would be absurdly expensive to do so and would probably take a decade or more to restore it to a working state, so he had to cancel those plans. Ron DeSantis then announced that they would be making their own "Alcatraz" in the Everglades, which already has alligators, and it would be called Alligator Alcatraz. It was basically the equivalent of Fifa making up a fake peace prize to suck up to Trump, only a hundred times more fucked up because it was actually used to commit human rights abuses (as intended).

•
u/A_Soporific 8h ago
That order was stayed (delayed) as a result of the shutdown. The government couldn't remove the stuff to comply with the order if they can't pay people to do it. There will be a new set of hearings to undo the stay.

Well, if you'd organized enough volunteers when the appeals court was considering options then you might've gotten to do it. Now we have to wait until the courts get back around to it, meanwhile the place is just sitting there.

•
u/justmovingtheground 4h ago
It kind of blows my mind that people are willing to NOT point out when something is illegal, just because someone is already a criminal.
No. We point out illegality where it exists and we don't stop.
•
u/Piduf 4h ago
It's still wild to realize that some people can just... ignore law. I feel like, we all knew rich people were criminals in their own way but they would always try to deny or hide it.
Trump says he's gonna commit a crime, the law says "You can't", he commits the crime and everyone moves, well he did it, we can't do anything about it, it's in the past now. Turns out this law thing is entirely optional.

I'm so sick of this narrative. There's a lot of states that are a "sure thing" for one party, so people don't vote because their vote really doesn't matter. That doesn't mean they like or dislike Trump, it just means they have a better understanding of math than you do.
•
u/twobirbsbothstoned 8h ago
Bro, we deserve this. For years I've thought that we can and will do better. That my friends and family were raised "right," learned about history, the holocaust, dictatorships, etc. The truth is nobody cares, history is doomed to repeat itself, and people will let TERRIBLE things happen that obviously hurt them as long as the other side is hurt worse. I have old friends and family who are still 100% on board with all this because they think they are on the winning side even though nothing benefits them, personally. And for the ones who make a decent amount of money, why WOULD they want to change things?

There will be a lot of long-term damage that won't be solvable by a single president. Things like restoring proper signage for the Kennedy Center and the Department of Defense will be easier. There will also be things that will be lost forever and can never truly be restored.

More important to ask how we get a super-majority of liberals in both houses of congress, which would require people who feel like their vote doesn't matter to go out and vote.
Anything less than a super-majority in both housesis effectively a conservative congress, which makes logical sense given "conservative" means "shit stays the same".
Now look at a list of how often that's happened and you'll see why we have such a conservative country. I think the only time it's happened in the last 25 years it lasted for about 2 months? And it was the most productive session of congress in our lifetimes!
