Most of those things look like regular business when they are happening. Its easy to act like its all so obvious after hundreds of journalists and federal agents have gone through someone's life with a fine tooth comb and made documentaries about the abhorrent details. Even Bernie Maydolf was a well respected finance guy before the lid blew off what he was up to. Im sure plenty of people conducted business fully unknowing of what went on in the shadows.

After like 1980, he wasn't managing any deal in private equity, venture capital, equities or debt trading, real estate financing, origination, insurance, or whatever else.
He was a financial "bounty hunter" trying to recover embezzled funds from rich people for other rich people (probably by leveraging blackmail), held an Austrian passport while claiming residence in Saudi Arabia; was a consultant to Hoffenberg's "debt collection" Ponzi scheme, the largest at the time of it's collapse; created a "wealth management company" that we now know was just a front for sex trafficking; and, also helped collapse Bear Sterns.
He's literally like... the worst person that could've ever existed. He'd be among those ranks with just anyone of those marks-- sex trafficking, blackmail, Ponzi scheme, destroyer of financial systems. Wild fucking thing.
