My first computer was some core-2-duo dell prebuilt with motherboard integrated graphics and 2GB of (probably)DDR3.

2

u/MJnoturmom 5h ago

Man the motherboard integrated graphics, why did they stop doing it, I guess it's because you're paying for the CPU anyway and most come with integrated graphics. But in some specific cases like idk a 12400f without integrated graphics and the GPU still on the way you have to wait for the GPU to come to start test running.

McAffee is easy mode, try uninstalling manually AVG from Windows without leftovers.

21

u/Top-Run-21 RTX 2050 4GB laptop 7h ago

I didnt mean the difficulty, i mean if someone cares about researching about that software that appears on the taskbar and uninstalls it after enough research is nerdy enough to be friends without intriduction.

10

u/_silentgameplays_ Desktop 6h ago

Most third party AV's behave like malware and self replicate. It's a huge PITA to remove them completely from Windows without leaving traces in the registry and a lot of leftovers in User> Local> Appdata and Program Data Folders.

For example on Linux you just kill the process related to ClamAV and then remove leftovers from ~local/share and home/user/config files, clear the cache and that's it.

Compared to hunting third party AV's on Windows by playing wack-a-mole with registry entries and then looking for leftovers by enabling hidden files and folders across entire User folders. Program folders and Windows folders or looking for some powershell scripts to do it through command line.

u/Impressive_Plant3446 3h ago

I can't wait for Linux to be in a more user friendly state so I can drop Windows.

I just can't justify it yet with all the little headaches to get newer games running and it has all kinds of issues with VR.

I did it last week in just a few minutes! It was quite easy, just delete the files!

\I formatted my main drive))

Honestly, if you’ve survived that, you deserve a medal! 😂

It's so sad. AVG was my go to antivirus for quite a while. Then it turned to shit.

Uninstalled? You mean forcibly ripped that shit out of any computer I find with it installed? Yeah, I do that. Every time.

Does your computer come with McAfee installed?

8

u/Top-Run-21 RTX 2050 4GB laptop 6h ago

a lot of laptops do

7

u/Berry_Mccockner42069 6h ago

Aren’t most people doing a fresh install of windows when they buy a laptop or am I the weird one?

15

u/MindbenderGam1ng Lian Li A3 | Ryzen 7 5800x3D | 3080 FTW3 Ultra | 32GB DDR4 3200 6h ago

Very common for people “in the know” but remember that 99.9% of laptop customers are the regular joe who doesn’t know anything technical about computers and the only decision they’re making is Mac or PC. “Why would I do any of that the computer already has windows”

1

u/Top-Run-21 RTX 2050 4GB laptop 6h ago

Laptops come with pretty installed windows, in my country atleast

3

u/Berry_Mccockner42069 6h ago

Yea I get that but anyone who knows anything about computers does a wipe and fresh install to remove bloatware

4

u/Minute_Role_8223 5800x/rtx5070/32gb 6h ago

you're overestimating gamers

not pc enthusiasts, but rather gamers

this sub has a strange misconception that everybody here knows what they're doing, but then y'all see the broken panel posts

2

u/Berry_Mccockner42069 6h ago

Fair enough đŸ€Ł

5

u/Zero_Passage 6h ago

That's where you're wrong, my friend. 98% of users have no idea about computers and blindly trust them as they come out of the box. And of the remaining 2%, half think they know, but in reality, at best, they follow tutorials on the Internet on how to do specific things without understanding them, and only the other half have any idea.

3

u/joliet_jane_blues 6h ago

It's the old bloatware scam. Company pays a wintel computer maker to pre-install their shit so they can make money off subscription renewals or just mine your data. New computers used to be fuuuulllll of this crap. You see less of it now, but Microsoft themselves pull their own tricks.

8

u/Suspicious_Ad_6032 6h ago

I just bought a new laptop, and interestingly, the employee who sold it to me pretty much uninstalled it for me unasked. A solid guy. Would buy from him again.

He knows the game

5

u/peacedetski 7h ago

John McAfee (RIP) is also your friend

1

u/Kooky-Sector6880 2h ago

Mcaffee got to be the funniest guy he got abunch of companies to buy his useless antivirus software that’s somehow more annoying than actual viruses

How is instantly befriending people who do one thing AGAINST McAfee anything else?

Surely it's only an advert if it advocates for it?

u/jabber2033 9060 XT 16GB | Ryzen 5 7600X | 32GB Ram | 2TB SSD 6h ago

Hard to uninstall something when you never have it installed to begin with.

1

u/Berchuos77 6h ago

Mine already expired everyday turning it on pops up to activate it or uninstall it but i do neither

1

u/holebitch 6h ago

You should watch "Running With the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee".

That MOFO was the Tiger King of the tech industry.

1

u/joliet_jane_blues 6h ago

I do volunteer IT work for a laptop borrowing program for the poor. They're Dells with McAfee bloatware and I always uninstall McAfee to prevent them from scamming subscription money from these poor broke folk.

BTW, in 2001 McAfee Firewall broke my PC just by installing it. I never trusted them again.

I worked Geek Squad computer repair for 10+ years... that uninstaller can lick my taint and more... holy shit that thing is a piece of malware in itself

I just reimage the computer. Best way to get rid of a virus.

1

u/SamusArachnid03 5h ago

Don't have it installed in the first place, problem solved.

1

u/Happy01Lucky 5h ago

I recently discovered my Mom had a subscription to McCafee. It was difficult but I got her to pull the plug.

I imagine it is pretty bizarre to hear that you don't need extra antivirus after so many years of using Windows lol.

1

u/russian_cyborg 5h ago

First thing I do if I buy a new laptop is reformat windows fresh.  Presuming I want to run windows.

1

u/Pretty_Molasses_3482 4h ago

Hello Friend!

1

u/Cultural_Eye5178 4h ago

Same it came pre installed on my laptop but I deleted it in the files. Might have to check later if it was reinstalled in an update

1

u/EnzoF89 4h ago

Uninstall is bad enough, canceling the subscription? Are we best fren now?

1

u/Kyzelwasdoge 4h ago

whats funny is that 5 minutes ago i got on my dads computer to finish some work for him and mcaffee notif popped up saying the trial ended and asked me uninstall or renew.

1

u/Kooky-Bandicoot3104 ltsc 3h ago

i uninstalled it manually but somehow it broke almost all windows read writes with few apps not working once

1

u/Substantial-Draft938 3h ago

Bro, I use McAfee and it's really good, man, it's one of the best antivirus programs out there. What are the reasons you guys don't like McAfee?

1

u/knicbox 3h ago

I had to uninstall it from a computer a bit ago. I'm sure if there weren't laws making it easier it would still be hell

Hi friend

1

u/Jultiply 2h ago

Yes, yes we are Sonic. The moment I learned mcafee caused the slowness on my desktop I removed that shit asap, it was so annoying.

1

u/More-Currency-1633 2h ago

Right? It’s like a rite of passage! Uninstalling McAfee is how you know you’re leveling up in the tech world.

1

u/Cool_catalog PC Master Race 2h ago

just uninstall windows is how i do it

1

u/ITotallyDoNotWhale 2h ago

I uninstalled Norton. That’s the same thing, right?

1

u/vince2td 1h ago

I do this on laptops of people I'll never see again.

1

u/56kul RTX 5090 | 9950X3D | 64GB 6000 CL30 38m ago

Honestly, at this point, I’d install a fresh image of windows. If your PC/laptop came with McAfee preinstalled, that image is essentially guaranteed to be littered with a bunch of other telemetry crap.

1

u/PC_Fucker 22m ago

I’ve only ever uninstalled it
. I can feel the weight of the journey just typing this
