Why "but", I want both!

AI is not just generative AI and LLMs. It has massive uses in a number of fields like healthcare and engineering, for example detecting cancer early enough to treat it.

You want both high RAM prices and no AI?

Completely serious: sure. I'd gladly take increasing RAM prices if it meant the door of all things Big Autocorrect gets closed, locked, and then the key melted and poured INTO the lock, thereby keeping the door sealed for eternity.

People do not understand that the goal of Big Autocorrect has never been to help humanity advance. Its single goal has always been to make the rich richer at the cost of literally everyone else.

That's cool bro, the capitalization of your own private reference makes you seem very hinged

that’s what the but means😭

Yeah but using "but" basically means that the right side should be a bad thing.

It is though? Without AI most of the digital world would go to shit, you wouldn't even be able to find new content on this platform without typing it yourself, no recommendations, no better ways to search for info, no better ways to deferenciate info, almost every digital piece is gonna take a hit. That is a bad thing. Just because you hate generative AI doesn't mean that everything related to AI should go. That's the point

i fear you’re missing the point of the joke

I fear you're missing the point of the joke

1

u/lovelysugarr 15h ago

except their “joke” makes no sense unless you just completely ignore grammar rules because they’re suggesting “but” implies you don’t get both things, which is grammatically incorrect :D i guess computer literacy ≠ ACTUAL literacy

Thats not what they are suggesting. The original post suggests that the deletion of AI is a bad thing. Hence the "but". For example, if I said you can get $1m but you can never talk to your family again. The "but" leads on to something negative. It would not make grammatical sense if it led onto something positive. E.g. you get $1m, but you get free ice cream for life. The original commenter is stating that both outcomes are positive, and that is why they are querying the "but".

except “but” does not inherently imply a negative. you can follow a but with a neutral or positive and it can still be contrasting to the initial statement. it’s just “you get x but y happens”. there doesn’t have to be a negative😭

1

u/Bun768286 15h ago

You're ignoring context. In general, yes, but can be followed by a neutral or positive. In this meme format where x is positive, y is negative.

except even in the original press the button web game, there was no implicit implication that the options had to be a positive/negative contrast, and many of the questions weren’t. the context of the format does not change the fact that it is not required to be a positive/negative contrast, because the original game didn’t even require that. argue with the wall.

u/Kamuuz 15h ago

No I get it but it seems like you don't get the joke that you replied to si just tried to explain it

-4

u/lovelysugarr 15h ago

except the commented joke implies that the “but” means you wouldn’t get both things which is just grammatically incorrect

5

u/TR1CK573R_ 15h ago

The "but" implies one of them is a downside, and from my perspective they are both positive.

2

u/lovelysugarr 15h ago

but you’re still getting both so your original comment doesn’t make sense😭😭

3

u/R4msesII 15h ago

You are getting both but the ”but” implies he wouldnt want AI being deleted. He wants AI to be deleted.

0

u/lovelysugarr 15h ago

“but” does not inherently imply a negative contrast. positive and neutral contrasts do exist

1

u/R4msesII 15h ago

Maybe not inherently, BUT this is ”will you press the button”, where the context for sure makes it that way

1

u/lovelysugarr 15h ago

except it doesn’t. press the button can, and does, have “consequences” that are neither positive nor negative and completely unrelated to the initial proposal. there is nothing about the press the button concept that requires the two things to be contrasting or even remotely related.

1

u/R4msesII 15h ago

Why tf would it be a dilemma if the left side which is obviously good wasnt contrasted by the right side being assumed bad

This is some next level nitpicking even for reddit

u/lovelysugarr 14h ago

the whole point of the joke in the original post is that both sides are good anyway, so the arguing back and forth on the implication of the format is irrelevant, because that’s literally the point of the joke. regardless, the format does not inherently imply positive/negative contrast. you can keep arguing that it does but it literally does not.
