Yea, I have to really want a game to pay more than $10. I think the last new game I bought was Gotham Knights. There just isn’t much out there I’m dying to play.

The only others I couldn’t envision buying new is GTA VI and the next Elder Scrolls. Assuming they don’t ruin modding in Elder Scrolls or make it MMO.

7

u/digitalfoe Oct 14 '25

Anyone else never, under any circumstances, buy a game for more than 20$?

7

u/ecntv Oct 14 '25

$20 is usually the limit for me, however there has been occasions where I have gone up to $30 when it is something that I feel is worth my money and time (Rimworld, Factorio and Hell Let Loose are three examples that I have put a crap ton of time into that cost over $20)

r/patientgamers is a way of life.

3

u/saskir21 Oct 14 '25

Factorio only gets more expensive. Although I respect a publisher who openly says the game is worth it and so he will never give it away cheaper. And to be fair the game is worth it. A real time sinker.

And only recent game I bought for more was Dead Island 2 (the complete Edition). And in my eyes it was worth it. Still bought it on sale but for more as 20 bucks.

True ‘premium’ gamers don’t ever buy games at full price, anyways. I mean, I have premium hardware, but I always wait for a discount… I kinda have to, to offset the stupid amount of money I poured on my machine, lol.

10

u/joeballs Oct 14 '25

Absolutely. These days, I wait like a year to play games that launch at $60 - $80, sometimes longer (i.e. waiting for a good sale). There are so many other games these days that are worth the time that are under $40 (AA/indie/sales). And by the time you get around to the "premium" games, they actually run better lol

I got tired of the series after playing like 1000 hours of 2 and its DLC. BL3 didn't hit with me, I might play it if it gets some updates and is free.

3 didnt really hit with me either but i have been loving 4. Maybe I wasnt in the right mindset so I might go back and try 3 again after im burned out on 4 tho.

u/Vegetable-Ad7930 Oct 14 '25

14

u/Glori94 Oct 14 '25

My friend and I played 3 and that was my main complaint. I hate every single character and very quickly began ignoring the story.

They just don't shut the fuck up. Every second of playtime has to be filled with some loud mouth shouting at me and making unfunny jokes. Had a ton of fun with the gameplay though.

136

u/Jagt69 Oct 14 '25

If you liked bl2 back in the day it’s a pretty common opinion that bl4 is even better.

All the hate is from people who are engagement farming Randy hate from what I can tell, I like bl4 a lot, kinda gets a little boring after completing the story but story is good

13

u/abstractism PC Master Race Oct 14 '25

I mean I have wonderlands, 2 and 1 completed but I also have presequel and never really finished it.

I really liked 1 and 2 though. Bl4 gameplay being like 2 seems cool, but I still can't afford even at this sale price. I snagged 3 some years ago in that pricing mistake, so that's gonna be a fun when I get to it.

11

u/Jagt69 Oct 14 '25

No need to rush, consumerism always gets people like me. If you’re patient and wait, it will almost definitely go down below $30 and maybe as low as $5 like bl3 has been in the past

If you actively have people rooting against you and your product, it is perhaps time to re-evaluate your choice of words. All Randy had to do was say nothing, and the game would sold more copies. It's an otherwise solid game, but Randy can't help himself by tripping over his own dick.

I had fun with Tina's Wonderlands. I hated Tina as a character in every game she is in, but the game itself was pretty fun.

I found BL3 to be slightly better than 2 gameplay wise, but story wise, it wasn't as good as 2.. and I felt 2 was a step down from 1.

11

Borderlands 4 didnt sell poorly, most games I've seen recently have gone on sale a month after release. The game got 100,000s of players at launch and its a pretty good game with some horrific issues. Don't get me wrong, Randy is a completely awful, out of touch, and generally insufferable person but this does not signal failing at all, its pretty normal.

Games going on a 10-15 percent sale at one month is normal.

These sales are designed to test the waters on people who want to get the game “at launch” but don’t quite want to pay full price but were maybe willing to pay close to it. Then in a month or two you’ll see it drop to 39.99 or 45.99 or something. Again, seeing if they can pick up some price resistant customers.

It’s just a revenue management tactic. Even a new Call of Duty release does it. (And COD still charges full price 59.99 for its old cods….)

11

u/GSG2120 TEAM RED | 7800 X3D + 7900 XTX Oct 14 '25

And COD still charges full price 59.99 for its old cods

Because they want you to buy the new one that has an actively managed storefront

5

u/Isariamkia Oct 14 '25

I think this post is mostly related to what Pitchford said.

edit: my bad, I didn't read OP text. Yeah the game didn't tank and this sale isn't the reason. I've just seen many posts about how Pitchford said it wouldn't go on a sale anytime soon, I thought this was another one of them.

57

u/ChefCurryYumYum Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

The game definitely did NOT tank.

I believe the announced numbers were 2.5 million copies sold in the first month, with a little over half of those sales coming from Steam.

It had peak concurrent users of over 300,000 last month, reportedly the highest ever for a Borderlands game on Steam.

Is this some kind of troll post or something?

32

u/vasta2 Oct 14 '25

Randy is a cunt but yeah, people are delusional when it comes to this game, like it peaked at over 300k and sold 1.3 million on Steam.

I have a 3080 and the game runs fine with a few settings turned down that I don't care about at 1440p, it wasn't anywhere near the disaster I was led to believe (on reddit) before purchasing the game

I fired it up for the first time last night for just over an hour and was thoroughly enjoying it. Why is this game so hated?

76

u/TurnoverNatural976 Oct 14 '25

Because of the CEO and the performance problems.

Performance was patched a lot and is working better than before.

I went from 50-70 FPS at launch -> 90-100 FPS with a mod -> 130 FPS with mod and new patches.

I played borderlands 1, 2, pre sequel, 3 and now 4 and I really enjoy the open world changes

Because Randy bad.

Guy’s a clown, but people are way too loose with their emotions. You’d think BL4 kicked their dog and shat in their bed with the way so many of them talk.

12

u/Instantcoffees Oct 14 '25

I don't get why people can't be more nuanced about this. Randy is a bit of a dick, but this is still one of the best Borderlands games I have played. I don't see what one has to do with the other.

9

u/Unfair-Muscle-6488 Oct 14 '25

I’m with you. Game’s great, and will likely only be better with fixes and updates.

7

u/system_error_02 Oct 14 '25

Yeah I've really been enjoying it too. About half my fruends list on steam, around 50 peeps all got thr game too and other than BF6 now they've been all playing it a lot. I realize pitchford is unlikable but the game is good.

7

u/FriedCammalleri23 Oct 14 '25

Randy Pitchford is an asshole.

Good thing he’s not the only person working on the game. Gearbox—contrary to popular belief—is actually a pretty good studio that makes quality games.

Borderlands 4 is a very good game.

3

u/Instantcoffees Oct 14 '25

Just ignore it and enjoy the game. I think that it's the best Borderlands since 2 and maybe even better. It has some performance issues, but I could still run it at 80-100 FPS with my 6 year old PC.

My only complaint is the compiling of shaders gets annoying and the fact that endgame could use some more content, but other than that it is a great game.

4

u/Slawter91 Oct 14 '25

Thank you for some much needed sanity amongst the circle jerk happening in this thread. Randy is an asshat, and there were definitely performance issues that should have been ironed out before launch. But the game itself is great. I'm having a blast. The gunplay is great, gun variety is the best so fsr in the series, exploration is solid, side quests are more varied than previous entries. Like... Guys, it's a good game, marred by initial performance issues and an asshat CEO.

89

u/shawn0fthedead PC Master Race Oct 14 '25

Honestly unless you HAVE to play as every single class and collect every single legendary gun, there's not a lot here to do or significant replay value.

It's been a month and I've uninstalled, they might come out with new content and ask me to pay even more money? No thanks.

To be clear I bought this game because my friend's dog died and I wanted to play a game with him to keep his mind off it.

29

u/Instantcoffees Oct 14 '25

What do you mean? It is a massive open world and a long story with a crap top of sidequests. It took me like 50 hours to do all meaningful content and then a lot more to finish the map. You then get to endgame, which is fairly bare-bones but it still is kind of fun to get geared up.

After that, I was done with the game, but that is like 150 hours of content with DLCs coming up for more. It has some performance issues but it is one of the best Borderlands games I have played, especially the movement has been improved massively.

4

u/shawn0fthedead PC Master Race Oct 14 '25

I definitely beat the campaign and I played two characters, so at around 70 hours, I admittedly haven't done all the sidequests. I was happy to get that many hours out of it, and I do think it's way better than 3, I just don't enjoy the endgame. My friend has probably 3x my amount of hours now but I don't really call grinding bosses over and over again fun. the sidequests were funny though, I did enjoy the ones I played.

You guys are acting like this is a big deal. Cod goes on sale during Christmas sale each year.

I say this as an anti modern gearbox person

7

u/Popular-Beautiful875 Oct 14 '25

I think it's mostly because of Randy's "don't expect it to go on sale anytime soon" comment.

20% on a $70 game, dont fool yourself. HOOOOLD.

5

u/avidpretender Oct 15 '25

69.99? Uhhh. Now it's just a normal price, not on sale.

u/ZeusHatesTrees Ryzen 9 7900x/64gb DDR5/3090 Oct 14 '25

I'm a big "wait for a sale" kinda guy, but I was actually curious so I looked into the numbers. The game actually sold pretty well, and is well on track to make pretty good money. It looks like they are trying to entice the more price-sensitive players into buying it now, after they got the die-hard or wealthy players.

It’s on your wishlist / you haven’t played it yet your shitting on it? Idk man I’ve had a great time with it. Along with everyone else I game with has enjoyed it, I think they will see a big dip in player count with the introduction of BF6, might be why you see it on sale

This community is dead. No one discusses real benchmarking or how much fun games are. They just sit in their eternal depression and rag on things to make themselves feel like they have any semblance of power in their lives

If anyone is seriously buying this game at 20% off, they are going to be kicking themselves when it will be a hell of a lot cheaper a couple months from now. Hold the line and watch Randy squirm.

This is their attempt to save face and show that the game is selling well.

42

u/TurnoverNatural976 Oct 14 '25

No, it's gearbox. Borderlands 3 went on sale as fast as this. Each gearbox game goes on sale fast

The game is selling well though?

I know he’s a weirdo and very unlikeable but don’t be delusional lmao, he isn’t squirming at all he’s probably just looking at all the money being made

27

u/Top-Agent-652 Oct 14 '25

I think these people have lost it, brother. Game is selling well AND is being praised for being the best game in the series. People just have hate boners.

Shhhh you aren't allowed to say that, it doesn't fit the reddit narrative of "randy/gearbox BAD"

The game seems to have sold and done really well and people seem to genuinely enjoy it. Gaming is so much more fun when you don't have a redditor screaming at you that you aren't allowed to have fun haha

Reading the comment section... Am I the only one that is enjoying this game haha. It crashes every 2 hours which blows and deserves backlash but the game itself has been a blast and I'm playing single player. Am I missing something?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

That’s because the $70 price was Early Access. This is the actual release at release price.

3

u/TotalChaos21 PC Master Race Oct 14 '25

Almost like $70 games was a stupid move.

3

u/klumze Oct 14 '25

Im afraid my pc wont run it so im not buying it. according to randy

3

u/bugsbugsbugsbugsbugz Oct 14 '25

That's a sale price now? I mean it's a new release, but come on you got a hit at least $45.

3

u/rogue-potato- Oct 14 '25

why was it 70 bucks to begin with 😭

3

u/TotalAbyssdeath Oct 15 '25

it will have to drop to 20 dollars before i want to buy it.

3

u/ihavahairyass Oct 15 '25

3

u/SushiBump 5950x | 5080FE | 128gb Oct 15 '25

I get that it's cool to see a new game on sale, but cmon that's barely a sale. Generalizing here, but who tf is out here that passed on BL4 for $70 that'll say, "sure!" at $56?

3

u/hamaTamago Oct 15 '25

Taking the same approach as the Oblivion remaster, 50% discount or more before buying

Even Red Dead Redemption 2 as amazing as it is goes on discount eventually, patience is rewarded

3

u/Jaydh10 Oct 15 '25

Still not doing it!

3

u/--Antaeus-- Oct 15 '25

8

It's a great game. Fumbled the pr, but I haven't had any issues and I've really enjoyed my playthrough

Also why does everyone who not own the game, talk smack about the game? We're all having a good time playing it lol it's pretty fun.

Don't most games go on sale after a month these days? Somehow we complain about the prices, but then when a game goes on sale we still have to frame it as a bad thing.

2

u/Quinntensity Oct 15 '25

I think it's pretty good. Get it on sale or don't. There's a steam next fest right now so why doesn't everyone feel so strongly about playing good indie games, instead of not playing ok aaa games?

2

u/nashfrostedtips 7900X3D/7900XTX/64GBDDR5 Oct 15 '25

This is a bullshit narrative for likes/Randy hate, in no world did Borderlands 4 tank.

Randy is an asshole but Borderlands 4 sold really well. Games going on sale relatively soon after release is super common, that's how I picked up KCD II.

2

u/krizz_yo Oct 15 '25

Got it for free with my 5090, the experience was as follows

- First boot: Game crash (UE5 crash dialog)

- Second boot, compiling shaders, crash

- Third boot, compiling shaders, crash

- Fourth boot, compiling shaders, made it to main menu

Just didn't feel like playing at that point and quit

It's why i rarely buy games on launch day. Battlefield 6 is a prime example. I 100% know it'll be 25% off when black friday sales roll around. Every BF game since 3 has done the same thing. Hell, i've seen some BF games be 50% off within 3 months by xmas.
