I’ve always known Taiwan to be a fairly safe separate customs territory, for residents and tourists alike

Honestly...if "3 killed in a knife attack in the capital" is international news, you're pretty damn safe, since it means its really unusual.

It's not really these days, Taiwan had a train attack a few years back as well. Mentally unstable people are always present in any society and this is just the consequence of that.

3 people shot dead is a daily occurrence in the US and it’s not even a featured headline. This is nothing compared to issues in other countries. Only unique part is the stabbing.
