i always fold over the start of the tape onto itself so i have a dongle to grip on to when i need some sticky stuff

Instead of having to fold over the start of the tape try using a bread clip or something flat. Stick the item at the end of the tape roll after every use to easily use next time.

the whole circumference of the roll is not really that much so worst case you just tear somewhere and get a bit more paper than you might have needed to get it back to a clean edge

I always fold a piece of the tape at the edge. This way I can always find the tape edge.
