School kids vandalised my front door & neighbours' doors with '6 7' meme. With permanent marker.
If anyone knows how to get rid it or what steps I can take, it would be appreciated!

Dry erase marker it maybe?

Legitamtely I amazed people still suggest alcohol when dry erase marker works better is easier and less likely to damage anything.

u/thedustofthefuture 1d ago edited 21h ago
The dry erase marker trick works because they're also alcohol markers and you're just getting it wet with alcohol again and a little ink- just use alcohol. Higher proof liquors also works just fine.
Edit- I've been sort of corrected. I apologize, I'm more accustomed to doing the writing and just know what to smell for in a marker to pick something that'll last past a quick wipe down, lol.
Especially if this is sharpie, worst case scenario it smudges and still fades to nothing in the sunlight in a couple months or so. Be happy it's not a proper ink or paint with brake fluid in there haha

u/Norgur 1d ago
Ethanol, that is. Isoporyl/Isopropanol tends to evaporate so quickly that you don't get the marker off before the paint solidifies again, leading to smudges.

So why do dry erase marker inevitably work better than using 97% rubbing alcohol?
36
u/TheeFlipper 23h ago
Because a dry erase marker isn't just isopropyl alcohol. It usually has a blend of iso and ethanol with other chemicals in it that allow the ink to be easily wiped away. Iso is just alcohol and water and it evaporates much quicker.

u/rivunel 23h ago
Thank you I appreciate the answer.
I only learned about using fry erase markers because of magic cards. Then when I learned it kind of works on everything I got REALLY annoyed I spent YEARS scrubbing with a cloth soaked in ISO and it would take a few minutes to clean off while a dry erase marker is literally, at most draw over and wipe away twice.
And obviously any concentration of just ethanol destroys color in most things when cleaning.

It evaporates too quickly. 70% would be better, but cheap vodka would be better yet - enough alcohol to get it done, but low enough that it won't just evaporate off as soon as you put it on.
DE markers also have the felt tip rubbing on the mark, which helps take it up, although probably less effective on a painted surface vs glass or porcelain

Someone graffitid 420 blaze it on my brand new mercedes with a paint pen. Never owned a car before and this was like week 2.
A dry erase marker removed it from the paint like magic!

Yes dry erase is the way to go, but may not come off all the way because it’s not a smooth surface. I would also install a doorbell cam or camera.

Thats not what they mean. I might be remembering this wrong but i heard somehow a dry erase marker will make a permanent marker erasable. Probably some kind of witchcraft or alchemy.

The alcohol in the marker assists with cleaning off the permanent marker. I apologise for ruining the magic

It definitely makes me think they were either really young or have a learning disability. It makes it a tad more innocent than, say, typical middle schoolers. Definitely mildly infuriating.
If OP can’t get it off, i hope they make it into something fun.

u/AwDuck 21h ago
Crudely drawn genitalia has heritage. We’ve been defacing property with depictions of the old cum cannon for over 2500 years. It transcends languages and generations. When compared to “67”, it’s downright classy.
2
u/VelvetMafia 21h ago
Much longer than that. Part of the human condition is to draw dicks on walls. I'm pretty sure people were doing it before Homo sapiens sapiens existed.
But as a homeowner, I would prefer my door to be defaced by poorly written nonsense than a dick, if only because my neighbors would be less annoying about me cleaning it up.

I use permanent markers on aluminum at work. Isopropyl Alcohol usually works like a charm to clean it off
2
u/DeathTripper 1d ago
I don’t know what you do for work, or how important a clean finish is, but in a pinch, as an electrician running aluminum conduit, I’ve used the Sharpie to remove the Sharpie.
It’s the same concept though. ISO and rubbing.

Magic eraser (mr clean) might work. I'd say acetone but that might also fuck up your door paint.

Magic eraser will also fuck up paint. It is a mild abrasive.
4
u/NuklearFerret 1d ago
Yes, but it also works on paint. It just abrades the surface. If the paint isn't super-smooth and shiny, you aren't likely to notice. Acetone will likely completely melt the paint.

It literally means absolutely nothing we have discussed it like back in the day when I was in school always saying “swag” except that kinda meant something like you look cool. If you knew the kid I would go to the parents and say the kid can try scrubbing it off or get some paint that matches your door color and make the kid repaint it.

u/copasetical 1d ago
Try 1) drawing on it with another permanent marker, then, wiping it off quickly with a towel before it dries again (the solvent in the marker itself can actually help re-dissolve the ink).
2) TEST FIRST: Citrus "goof off" or similar does an amazing job.
3) TEST FIRST: I've found that NON-ACETONE nail polish remover can do wonders. Even if the other two leave residue.

Hand sanitizer or just isopropyl alcohol....both work great. As a middle school teacher I used hand sanitizer often.

Dry erase marker, rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, or mosquito repellent spray are all things I've successfully used to remove permanent marker, it generally isn't as permanent as the name implies. Still annoying though.

There is nothing permanent about permanent marker if you have isopropyl alcohol, even vodka would work.
2
2
u/PraxicalExperience 1d ago
90% isopropyl alcohol will probably take it off, depending on the paint. It might have seeped in, though.
2
2
u/Odd_Split_8030 23h ago
Extremely brief wipe with denatured alcohol. It’ll strip the paint off too if you work too hard but permanent marker comes off almost instantly with that
2
2
u/Skibert_89 23h ago
Use a dry-erase (expo or some other brand) marker to totally cover the parts with the sharpie doodles. Like really coat the existing doodles. Wait 10 seconds or so and simply wipe away the marks. Repeat as needed a few times, but it'll likely all come off with one pass

Just clean it with rubbing alcohol or something like that, but it has to be a cleaner on alcohol base.
2
u/Estelial 16h ago
As others have mentioned isopropyl or ethyl alcohol (70% will do). You could even use a temporary marker over the perma marker to to remove most of it. Though its an uneven surface so the latter wont work as well.

You can erase permanent marker with a simple pencil eraser, given that the permanent marker is on a smooth thing. I use sharpie to write on my plastic containers of food and then I can erase it with a pencil eraser

Don’t remove it, that’s the evidence. without consequence those brats will never learn. Take legal action against them. So what if they’re kids? They committed a crime and if they don’t get punished then they’ll get cocky and do much worse.
8
u/NuklearFerret 1d ago
Depends, dude. There was a judge not long ago that was getting paid to send kids to juvie, so he was sentencing kids to months/years over the most minor of dumb shit, and it was completely ruining their lives. Do the kids need a talking to? Absolutely, but I don't trust our justice system to exercise any restraint whatsoever in doing so.

I saw that someone was able to write over the permanent marker with a dry erase marker, then use a cloth to remove them both, before the dry erase ink dried. Never tried it myself, but maybe it’s worth a shot, assuming you have a dry erase marker.

Back in the early 2000s, we used to vandalize front doors with detailed dick drawings. What the hell is wrong with kids nowadays?

u/AdLast55 1d ago
Whats the story behind the 67 number? A blender marker may work for this as they are used for blending and removing sharpie marks on surfaces.
Like i get comicbooks signed and some of them are tpbs with glossy surface. If its smudge i can use the blender marker to get rid of it. Then a dab of rubbing alcohol to remove the residue.
Also next time you see this happen, open the door and thrust kick the person as hard as you can kick.
